MACBETH (マクベス MAKUBESU), FORMERLY KNOWN AS CODE MIDNIGHT, WAS A BLACK MAGE OF ORACIÓN SEIS: A BLACK GUILD MADE UP OF VERY POWERFUL MAGES WHOSE AIM WAS TO FIND A MAGIC KNOWN AS NIRVANA, A HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE POWER THAT WAS SEALED LONG AGO.

After the rebirth of the Oración Seis guild, Macbeth became Brain II. He then joined the Criminal Witch guild as an independent Mage after escaping from prison, at Jellal’s request, in order to help him eliminate Zeleph.

Macbeth Fairy Tail 1
APPARITION

Macbeth is a very lean, slightly effeminate young man, with short, spiky black hair on top, and longer, straight white hair on the underside; he has long locks of white hair framing each side of his face, the right lock, in particular, adorned with five brown pearls. He wears a black leather vest trimmed with white fur, a white armband around his right bicep and a black collar around his neck. Macbeth also wears yellow pants with black patterns and burgundy boots; he has spiked bracelets on his wrists and skull earrings in his ears. Macbeth’s lower eyelashes are very prominent, and he wears dark eyeliner and plum-colored lipstick. Macbeth’s red Oración Seis mark is on his right shoulder, and he wears dark nail polish.
During the arc of the Starry Sky Key, Macbeth’s spiky black hair has grown considerably; it now reaches the middle of his back, masking the vast majority of the white part of his hair, with the exception of a small braided lock that hangs down the left side of his face. However, from X791, after being released from prison, Macbeth shortened the black part to its original length, and his hair is no longer straight and spiky, but more wavy. He no longer wears lipstick or eyeliner. He now wears a full white suit with a brown stripe decorating the mid-thigh region, as well as a brown décolletage. He completes his outfit with a black vest, over which he also wears a brown coat trimmed with white fur.

PERSONALITY

Macbeth is an extremely laid-back individual, as evidenced by the fact that he is often seen sleeping on his magic carpet. He seems to believe that his power is absolute, or at least greater than anyone else’s: in battle, he often expresses annoyance at his opponent’s lack of strength, leading Macbeth to exude an air of superiority and arrogance. However, Macbeth speaks kindly to others, as can be seen when he addresses members of his guild, but he doesn’t necessarily show the same courtesy to non-guild members.
He seems to be extremely sadistic; when he finds a worthy opponent, he makes him suffer. Despite his apparent reverence for Brain, Macbeth eventually becomes disillusioned with Brain’s manipulation, realizing that Brain saw him and his guild members as nothing more than pawns to seal Zero. Consequently, Macbeth gives Erik permission to kill Brain, smiling at the idea of the man he once considered an adoptive father dying, showing a ruthless part of his personality.

Like the rest of the guild, Macbeth values his freedom and is prepared to go to great lengths to obtain it. From Macbeth’s words to Jellal, we can deduce that he is somewhat fond of the members of his guild and has a strong bond of friendship with all of them, with the exception of Brain. Macbeth explicitly trusts Erik, asserting that “if Erik says it’s right, it must be right”.

Macbeth shows an understanding and respectful side towards the members of his guild, as we see when Richard decides to follow Jellal, he simply states that everyone has the freedom to choose what they want.

Macbeth joins Jellal to obtain true “freedom” and to defeat Zeleph. It’s unclear whether he’s truly devoted to Jellal’s goal or not.

HISTORY

Little is known of Macbeth’s past, except that he was a slave of the Tower of Heaven as a child, just like the other members of Oración Seis. Out of fear, Macbeth was unable to sleep under Jellal’s reign, until Brain, with Jellal’s permission, selected Macbeth and four other young children to join his guild.

MAGIC AND CAPABILITIES

Deflector (屈折リフレクター Rifurekutā): Deflector is Macbeth’s exclusive Magic, which has the ability to reflect, distort and twist all kinds of objects, with the exception of living beings, such as humans. Deflector is an extremely powerful Magic that was praised by the former member of the Holy Ten Wizards, Jellal Fernandes, who, while in a weakened state, came across it. Macbeth claimed that his use of this magic made him the strongest member of Oración Seis, surpassing even Brain, but in reality, he’s outdone only by Brain’s alternate personality: Zero.
The invisible scythe (インビジブルサイス Inbijiburu Saisu): By twisting the air, Macbeth is able to generate ethereal blades which he can send at his opponents. Their size and the number of blades generated can vary considerably, from barrages of small attacks to devastating single cutting motions he generates by waving his hands, and which are powerful enough to effortlessly slice through solid stone buildings, bifurcating them cleanly.

Warp Shield: Macbeth’s ability to twist everything makes it very difficult to hit him, as he can freely warp any incoming attack to negate its effects, and even turn them against the same opponents who originally employed him. He is able to reflexively invoke this defensive spell even when asleep.

Spiral of Suffering (スパイラルぺイン Supairaru Pein): A powerful spell that Macbeth initiates by sliding one of his arms in front of him, index finger extended and the others bent, as if pointing at something. The intended target, a few meters away from Macbeth himself, is then caught in a whirlwind of distorted air, which inflicts heavy damage, seeming to strike it with incredible brute force, covering it in bruises and shattering armor as tough as Erza Scarlet’s Heaven’s Wheel Armor, leaving it in its wake.

Nightmare (悪夢 Akumu): By refracting light, Macbeth is able to generate visual illusions. This particular use of his reflective magic is the origin of Macbeth’s code name: during his battle with Erza Scarlet, he used an illusion to make it appear that he had transformed into a massive, powerful monster capable of completely dominating and brutalizing Erza and Jellal; he resorted to such means just as a clock struck midnight, claiming that this is when the reflector is strongest. However, as it is a visual illusion, this spell is ineffective against those with artificial eyes.

Macbeth Fairy Tail 3

Invisibility: Macbeth refracts the light around him, becoming invisible and at the same time showing himself capable of levitating in the air, appearing and disappearing as if teleporting.

Personification magic: Macbeth used this magic to transform dolls into entities, with life, purpose and the ability to use magic.

Lapointe: Using a lock of Zero’s hair, Macbeth creates a Zentopian cardinal with features of both Brain and Zero.

Imitatia: Using Lucy’s Gonzales doll, Macbeth creates “the mistress of mimicry and deception”.

Enhanced reflexes: Although he tends to nullify any attack directed at him thanks to his reflective magic, Macbeth possesses sharp reflexes, high enough that he can dodge a sword thrown at him by Erza Scarlet with a slight, calm movement of the head, as well as emerge with minimal injuries from a barrage of descending blades, dodging most of them.

Expert in unarmed combat: Macbeth appears to have practiced unarmed combat for the seven years following the temporary disappearance of Tenrou Island. As leader of Reborn Oración Seis, he achieved a level of physical prowess sufficient to fight hand-to-hand with a melee specialist, such as Natsu Dragnir, since the end of their fight consisted of melee combat. He was shown using his dark magic to enhance the power of his punches and kicks, strongly reminiscent of the way Natsu himself uses his own fire dragon slayer magic, even managing to overwhelm Natsu using this method.
