APPARENCE OF ZARBON
Zarbon is an elite soldier who emphasizes his beauty and physical appearance. In the series, he is considered very handsome. Zarbon belongs to an advanced reptilian alien race, as evidenced by his small golden eyes and light blue skin. He has long, braided green hair. Zarbon also wears earrings and a tiara, giving him the air of a noble prince. He wears a long blue cape and purple combat gloves. Zarbon also wears the armor typical of Freezer’s soldiers, and as the Emperor’s right-hand man, he possesses an enhanced blue power sensor. When Zarbon transforms, his body mass doubles and he regains his original reptilian form. His face is then deformed and he has fangs instead of teeth. 🐊
PERSONALITY:
Like Dodoria, Zarbon is part of Freezer’s inner circle because of his intelligence. He plays a key role, having advised Freezer to eliminate the Saiyan race after realizing that they represented a future threat. Zarbon also has an in-depth knowledge of interplanetary trade and always advises Freezer on strategies for conquering systems or planets. 🪐
As far as he’s concerned, Zarbon hates his true appearance, finding it ugly. However, he only uses his transformation as an ultimate defense mechanism. In his original form, Zarbon’s power is at least doubled, giving him great power. When he transforms, he abandons his “beautiful” appearance to adopt a more bestial form, referring to the tale of Beauty and the Beast. Although he hates the look of his transformation, Zarbon is very proud of the power it gives him. Indeed, he becomes much stronger, confident and violent. 👊
Nevertheless, he still attaches great importance to his beauty and constantly brings it to the fore. This is particularly evident when he refuses to search a lake for Vegeta’s body, for fear of getting his hair wet.
Like other soldiers in Freezer’s army, Zarbon is extremely arrogant and tends to underestimate his opponents. Despite his status as Freezer’s main commander, Zarbon is often terrified by him. Indeed, like Dodoria, Zarbon is considered expendable by the Galactic Emperor. This threat is demonstrated several times in the Namek saga, when Freezer threatens to kill Zarbon on several occasions. 💀
Like Dodoria, Zarbon hates Saiyans and seems to particularly dislike Vegeta, probably because of his attitude. He takes pleasure in referring to the Prince of the Saiyans as a “monkey” during a flashback.
In appearance and temperament, Zarbon seems to be Freezer’s most “human” soldier, compared with Dodoria or Kiwi, who are far crueler than he is. He loves his rank and position in the Galactic Emperor’s army, but also seems to work out of fear. 😨
In some video games, we learn that Zarbon is one of, if not the most intelligent of Freezer’s entire army. Indeed, he hates simple minds, which explains his aversion to Dodoria, whom he considers a brute and rather ugly.
BIOGRAPHY:
Initially, Zarbon served alongside Dodoria and the Ginyu Commando under King Cold. He then switched to Freezer’s service when King Cold ceded power to his son. Dodoria also left the Force Cold, as did the Commando Ginyu, to serve the Galactic Emperor. 😎
Thanks to his exceptional power and intelligence, Zarbon became one of Freezer’s two main commanders, alongside Dodoria, and was even appointed right-hand man.
This elite warrior is the only one in the entire galactic army to have learned a transformation, enabling him to change appearance like his master, with the aim of becoming more powerful. 💪
When King Vegeta rebelled against Freezer, Zarbon witnessed the latter’s terrifying power, killing the Saiyan king in one fell swoop. The elites accompanying King Vegeta were also eliminated in a single attack, and it was probably at this point that Zarbon decided to serve Freezer out of fear. When the Galactic Emperor suggested destroying planet Vegeta, Zarbon asked him if such an extreme operation was necessary. Freezer replied that other Saiyans would eventually rebel following King Vegeta’s example, and that it was preferable to annihilate the whole planet. 🌍
Some time later, after Vegeta, Nappa and Raditz had returned from a mission on the planet Shiik, Zarbon was able to mock the three Saiyans alongside Freezer. Indeed, Vegeta and his men had taken three days to depopulate the planet, and Zarbon declared that it wouldn’t have taken more than a day to accomplish the same thing. In addition to failing to congratulate them, Zarbon even executed an insulting curtsy to ridicule and provoke the Prince of the Saiyans.
ZARBON DURING THE FREEZER SAGA
Zarbon and Dodoria accompany Lord Freezer to Namek to search for the seven crystal balls. Freezer’s wish is to obtain immortality to maintain his dominion over the universe. The trio, along with other henchmen, massacre numerous Nameks, pulverizing entire villages to obtain the artifacts. 💥
For his part, Vegeta continues his betrayal of Freezer and also travels to planet Namek to collect the Dragon Balls for personal use. Like Freezer, he too wishes to achieve immortality. The Prince of the Saiyans eliminates Kiwi, then Dodoria after separating him from the rest of Freezer’s forces. 🤛
At this point in the story, Zarbon is the Emperor’s last living elite soldier, prompting him to send the Ginyu Commando to Namek as reinforcements. Slightly frightened, Zarbon asks the reason for the Special Forces’ call, and Freezer replies that he has had a premonition that a great warrior will manifest on Namek.
While waiting for reinforcements, Zarbon goes in search of the last crystal balls with Apple. The two warriors split up to survey the area, and Zarbon finally comes face to face with Vegeta.
The Prince of the Saiyans challenges him to a duel, convinced that he will emerge victorious after defeating Dodoria. Zarbon, who finds it hard to believe that Vegeta has become so strong, asks him why he betrayed Freezer. Vegeta declares that he has always felt an intense hatred for the Emperor, and believes he has a chance of defeating him if Porunga, the sacred dragon of Namek, grants him immortality. Frustrated at not being able to gauge his opponent’s power, Zarbon, whose power sensor was destroyed some time before, finds himself in a tricky situation. 👍
Vegeta concludes the conversation by stating that he has become Freezer’s greatest fear: a Super Saiyan.
The fight begins and the Prince of the Saiyans dominates the early stages. He effortlessly deflects the reptilian’s Elegant Blaster and dodges the rest of his attacks. Vegeta then sends his opponent crashing to the ground on Namek. Zarbon rises to his feet and reveals to Vegeta the existence of his transformation. He explains that he hates this form, but doesn’t hesitate to use it to crush his enemies. The reptilian then begins his metamorphosis and adopts his bestial demonic form. 🐲
In the ensuing battle, Zarbon gains the upper hand over the Prince of the Saiyans. He inflicted a long series of brutal blows and numerous headbutts. To discourage Vegeta, Zarbon takes a short break and reveals Freezer’s ability to transform as well. The fight resumes, Zarbon enjoying himself for a moment, pounding his opponent with blows, then knocking him out with an aerial bombardment. The Prince of Saiyans’ head crashes violently to the ground of Namek, and his body disappears into the waters of a Namek lake. Zarbon leaves Vegeta for dead and leaves to report his victory to Freezer. 👍
The Galactic Emperor then asks for confirmation of the Saiyan prince’s death, and Zarbon replies that Vegeta is unlikely to survive the injuries he has sustained. The Saiyan’s body having landed in a lake, Zarbon didn’t want to get his hair wet searching the area. Freezer was furious, calling this behavior unacceptable and demanding confirmation of the prince’s death. What’s more, Vegeta has probably hidden the last Dragon Ball, and the Emperor wants to question him about the artifact’s whereabouts. It’s at this point that Freezer threatens to kill Zarbon if he doesn’t complete his mission and bring back the last Dragon Ball. 🐉
Zarbon then turns back and heads back to the lake to carry out Freezer’s will. For his part, Apple informs that the Ginyu Commando is on its way with new and improved power detectors.
Once at the lake, the reptilian quickly locates Vegeta’s battered body and decides to take him to one of Freezer’s ships for treatment and information on the latest Dragon Ball. Apple then informs him that the Saiyan’s body is severely damaged and there’s a possibility he won’t survive. Zarbon insists on the importance of Vegeta’s survival so that he can be interrogated by Freezer. 🤔
Once he’s healed, the Prince of the Saiyans receives a power boost and destroys the healing capsule. The explosion is so powerful that it kills Apple instantly. Zarbon and Freezer then head to the site of the explosion and notice a huge hole in a wall as well as the Saiyan’s escape.
Freezer also notices that Vegeta has fled, taking all the Dragon Balls with him. The Galactic Emperor loses his temper and orders Zarbon to bring him the artifacts or risk killing him. Freezer also adds that Zarbon has one hour to find the escaped Saiyan. 🦶
Despite losing his sensor, Zarbon spots Krillin carrying a Dragon Ball and is pursued by Vegeta. He manages to follow them to the cave used by Gohan and Bulma as a hiding place. Zarbon intercepts the Prince of the Saiyans and challenges him once again. Despite Freezer’s threat, the alien warrior begins to warm up at the start of the fight, retaining his basic form. When he remembers the Emperor’s threat, he assumes his bestial form to continue the fight.
Vegeta dodges all attacks, rises into the air and finally throws sand into his opponent’s eyes to blind him. The Prince of the Saiyans takes advantage of this to deliver a powerful punch to his opponent’s back, then follows up with a long series of ki blows, inflicting severe wounds and damaging his battle armor. Krillin takes advantage of the fight to encourage Bulma to leave the cave. Vegeta notices them and gets in their way. Zarbon, furious, rushes back to the Prince of the Saiyans, emerging from the water, and the fight resumes. 😅
Vegeta takes the opportunity to inform the reptilian that his power increases considerably every time he comes close to death, and that he is now the strongest.
After an endless and rapid series of blows, Vegeta delivers a powerful punch to Zarbon’s chest, completely shattering his battle armor and drawing blood. In extreme panic, Zarbon begs the Saiyan for his life. He explains that he was only obeying the Emperor’s orders and even proposes an alliance against him. The reptilian explains that they could defeat Freezer, but it turns out that this is only a strategy to save his own life. ☝
In response, Vegeta destroys his spine with a kick, and Zarbon’s body collapses into the Sea of Namek.
ZARBON IN OTHER SAGAS
During Dragon Ball GT’s Super C17 saga, Zarbon manages to escape from the Underworld along with many other villains. His first act on Earth is to wreak havoc on cities alongside Dodoria. However, he is once again defeated and sent back to the Underworld. 😈
In the Broly movie, Zarbon is present alongside King Cold and Freezer, accompanying the tyrannical family. At this point in the story, they are part of the Cold Force before being officially integrated into the Freezer Force. The two elite warriors escort the tyrannical family as they force the submission of the Saiyan people to King Vegeta.
FILM BARDOCK
In the year 737, aboard Freezer’s ship, Zarbon and Dodoria brief the galactic emperor on interplanetary trade and the progress of space conquests. Zarbon tells Freezer that a small group of middle-class Saiyans have managed to take control of the planet Kanassa in just a few days. Dodoria adds that it was a difficult system to conquer, even for the Emperor’s elite squadrons. Under the influence of his advisors, Freezer began to appreciate for the first time the danger posed by the Saiyan people. The galactic emperor then decided to take radical measures and chose to annihilate the Saiyan race. 💀
Zarbon and Dodoria are then ordered to eliminate Bardock, one of the most dangerous and powerful Saiyans of the moment, along with his detachment composed of Toma, Shugesh, Borgos and Fasha. Zarbon refuses to get his hands dirty and it’s Dodoria who slaughters Bardock’s entire team, carelessly leaving him alive. Having recovered from his wounds, Bardock sets out to avenge his comrades against Freezer’s army, managing to fight his way to Freezer’s flagship. The Emperor decides it’s time to call it a day, and asks Zarbon to lift off his seat and exit the ship. After some hesitation, Zarbon finally obeys and takes his place at the tyrant’s side. 💥
Freezer then destroys Planet Vegeta and Bardock in his path with a ball of energy. Zarbon and Dodoria, witnesses to this terrible and insensitive explosion, are the only ones, apart from Freezer, to witness the destruction of the Saiyans’ planet.
ZARBON POWER
Zarbon’s power level varies according to its form. In his basic form, his power level is between 20 and 24,000. He is thus less powerful than Vegeta in the Namek saga, but far exceeds him once transformed. In his bestial form, his power level easily reaches 30,000 units, surpassing the Prince of the Saiyans in his monster form. Transformed Zarbon approaches the power of Recoome, Jeice and Barta, but remains far behind Ginyu. 🤔
ZARBON’S FAVORITE ATTACKS
Comet arrow: Zarbon charges energy by raising his right hand upwards, then sends a powerful shot of yellow ki towards his opponent.
Bloody dance: this is a long series of close-combat kicks used by Zarbon. He executes this combination gracefully, giving the impression of dancing.
Styled blaster: one of Zarbon’s most powerful attacks. He extends his arm towards his opponent, palm open, and fires a devastating yellow energy beam. He can also perform this technique once transformed, using less energy.
Canon of possibilities: a simple wave of energy fired in the direction of the opponent.
Wild pressure: Zarbon uses this technique only when transformed. After inflicting several blows in close combat, he grabs his opponent and delivers three powerful head blows. Zarbon notably used this fearsome attack against Vegeta.
Monstrous Crushing: this is Zarbon’s devastating attack once transformed. He grabs his opponent to propel him into the air, then catches him and sends him crashing violently to the ground, inflicting heavy damage.
Ruthless Kick: a powerful kick aimed at the opponent’s neck. Zarbon used this technique to kill Nameks villagers during the Freezer saga.
Shooting Star Arrow: an energy shot used by Zarbon to kill a Namek in Moori village.
ANECDOTES ABOUT ZARBON:
– Its name is a pun based on the Japanese word for grapefruit (ザボン or 朱欒).
In a Japanese magazine, Zarbon was voted as one of the five main henchmen of the saga.
Although not the strongest warrior in Freezer’s forces, Zarbon is still the most powerful of his race. He claims to be able to wipe out the population of an entire planet in just one day, and is usually responsible for recruiting the strongest warrior around to join the galactic army. 💪
Given that Vegeta managed to leave the planet after his defeat on Earth, Zarbon is the first character in the saga to have fought and defeated the prince of the Saiyans on equal terms.
In the video game Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Chichi has mixed feelings about Zarbon’s appearance. She indicates that Bulma might like his appearance, which turned out to be true, as Bulma was almost smitten when she first saw Zarbon. However, she was quickly cooled when she discovered the alien’s reptilian, bestial form. 🐲
Zarbon is the fourth and final villain to be coveted by Bulma. She was previously attracted by Oolong transformed into a gentleman, by Yamcha when he was a desert bandit, and finally by Commander Blue.
Zarbon’s earrings bear a striking resemblance to the Potalas used much later in the saga.
Zarbon is a very effeminate character and is dubbed by a woman in the Greek version of Dragon Ball Z. 👩
