Kenpachi Zaraki was the previous captain of the 11th Division, being the 11th Kenpachi to hold the position. At the end of his term, he resigned to allow the next “Kenpachi” to take his place.
Currently, he lives as a simple resident of the Soul Society, occasionally indulging in hunting Hollows for sport. His adopted daughter is named Yachiru Kusajishi.
APPARITION
Kenpachi is a Shinigami with a muscular, wild and aggressive appearance that reflects his personality. He wears a shredded, sleeveless captain’s haori that was taken from the former captain after his defeat. His hair is combed into spikes, adorned with small bells at the ends. He wears a special eye patch over his right eye, created by the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, to reduce his powerful spiritual energy. When it first appeared, the eye patch was more elaborate, with a golden lining and a chain forming part of its straps. However, after his defeat by Ichigo, he became an ordinary black eye-patch with conventional straps. He has green eyes, pronounced shaved eyebrows and a huge scar running across the left side of his face, which he obtained before meeting his future lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi. He is also one of the tallest Shinigami, measuring 202 centimetres, making him slightly taller than Yasutora Sado and almost twice the height of his lieutenant. His stature is often exaggerated further for dramatic purposes, particularly in comparison to Yachiru.
🔥PRODUCTS OF THE MOMENT🔥
Kenpachi’s unique hairstyle is partly due to his daily routine of taking a bath before bed. This habit is essential for him because of his heavy perspiration. During his baths, he usually washes his hair with soap, making it straight. He appreciates this method because it allows him to easily style his hair to his preference. He once tried a hair treatment recommended by 1st division lieutenant Chōjirō Sasakibe, but it made his hair too silky and difficult to style for a while. Since then, Kenpachi hasn’t been a fan of the lieutenant. After his departure from Gotei 13, his hair returned to its original length, reaching his shoulders.
He is once shown tying the bells to his hair, a task that apparently takes time. The highest bell, in particular, takes him several hours, as the tips of his hair are just out of his reach. From time to time, Yumichika Ayasegawa, of the 5th headquarters of the 11th division, offers to do it for him, but Kenpachi refuses as he finds it strange for someone else to style his hair.
PERSONALITY
Despite his reputation as a violent fighter, Kenpachi’s actions often have positive consequences. He suffers from a very poor sense of direction, and sometimes asks Yachiru for help (although his sense of direction is just as bad). Kenpachi lives for combat, and nothing gives him more satisfaction than a good fight. He even holds back in order to prolong the duration of each fight. For him, injury and death are nothing more than the price of a good fight. Although his division is reputed to be the most bloodthirsty in Gotei 13, the 11th division has its own code of ethics, which differs from Soul Society rules and regulations.
Despite his love of combat, Kenpachi has shown that he is capable of experiencing emotions. He’s had a close relationship with his lieutenant, Yachiru, since they met, adopting a father-figure role towards her (making Yachiru one of the few people he cares for, alongside 11th Division’s 3rd Seat, Ikkaku Madarame, and 11th Division’s 5th Seat, Yumichika Ayasegawa).
Aside from Yachiru, Kenpachi attaches great importance to his name. After his fight with Ichigo Kurosaki, Kenpachi expresses the sense of pain he feels at not having had a name during his early years. Since then, he has been striving to discover his identity.
Despite his tendency towards brutality, Kenpachi will usually end a fight if his opponent is too injured to defend himself, claiming that he’s not interested in fighting the “weak who can no longer fight” and that he has no need to deal a mortal blow to those unable to fight. However, he won’t hesitate to kill his opponent if he refuses to end the fight, as seen in his clashes with Kaname Tōsen and Nnoitra Gilga.
On many occasions, Kenpachi has shown great respect for those who are able to defeat him in a fight and push him over the edge. Since his first known defeat against Ichigo (although Ichigo also considers this fight a defeat for him), Kenpachi considers Ichigo a member of his division. He also expresses his desire to fight him again whenever they meet, although Ichigo already considers Kenpachi a friend and refuses this proposal. Despite this, Kenpachi continues to challenge him to duels, as evidenced by his help to Ichigo in his fight against the Bounts. After his defeat by Nnoitra, Kenpachi expresses his respect for the fallen warrior.
Kenpachi firmly believes that pleasure comes before work. In every fight, he seeks to get as much pleasure out of it as possible. For example, he sends his 5th officer, Yumichika, to repel the Bounts in the city of Karakura, because he’s the only high-ranking officer who isn’t busy, or rather, busy having fun, while Yachiru nibbles and Ikkaku naps. In his spare time, Kenpachi always takes an afternoon nap. He doesn’t have a favorite dish, but he particularly hates nattō.
It seems that Kenpachi sometimes contradicts his own logic in fighting. On the one hand, he wants to increase his own power, but on the other, he hides his strength to prolong the pleasure of the fight. To some extent, Kenpachi is a complex character with a wide range of traits: lethargic, bloodthirsty, rebellious, empathetic and wise.
HISTORY
Kenpachi’s surname comes from the district in which he once lived, Zaraki, which was the 80th district of Rukongai’s northern alley. District #80 was known for being chaotic and lawless, populated by thieves and murderers (whereas district #1 was the more orderly and law-abiding). During his time in district #80, Kenpachi was nameless. During this time, he developed great skill in the art of swordplay and eliminated many enemies. During his travels outside district #80, he met a little girl whom he named Yachiru, after the only person he ever admired, as she showed no fear in the face of his sword. Yachiru came from district #79, Kusajishi, where her parents were murdered. The two events apparently occurred around the same time. On that day, Kenpachi also took on a name: Kenpachi, the title given to the strongest Shinigami of each generation, the one who killed the most enemies and won the most battles.
They then met Ikkaku Madarame and Yumichika Ayasegawa before entering Seireitei. Yachiru warned Ikkaku that playing with Zaraki when he was in a good mood was a bad idea, although Ikkaku didn’t take the warning seriously. When Kenpachi and Ikkaku came face to face, Kenpachi was immediately struck by the power of his reiatsu, but he was happy to finally have a real challenge. Kenpachi attacked with such force that he dug a crater under Ikkaku, which slightly worried Yumichika. Thanks to Zaraki’s strength, Ikkaku was on the defensive, fending off Kenpachi’s relentless attacks. The two men continued to fight, Ikkaku seeking to defeat Kenpachi, but failing and being wounded while Kenpachi remained untouchable against his blade. While Kenpachi was enjoying himself, he decided to put a quick end to the fight, which led to his victory. Ikkaku was enraged by Kenpachi’s decision to leave without killing him. Kenpachi made it clear that he was not interested in weaklings who could no longer fight. He stressed that he had no obligation to kill Ikkaku, while Ikkaku believed they were playing games and demanded that Kenpachi kill him.
He lost patience and grabbed Ikkaku, asking him why he was screaming for death if he loved fighting so much. Kenpachi explained to him a philosophy they should follow. “Do not accept defeat and seek death. Die first, then admit defeat. When you lose but don’t die, it simply means you were lucky. At such times, think only of survival. Survive and think only of killing the guy who failed to kill you.” Zaraki then smiled at him and said that it wasn’t as if it had been easy for him, but that he had simply been lucky to escape death. He expressed that Ikkaku should live, come back and try to kill him again. When Zaraki left, Ikkaku asked his name and was told it was Kenpachi from Zaraki.
Some time later, Zaraki killed Kenpachi Kiganjō, the captain of the 11th division, with a single blow, in front of more than two hundred members of the division. Zaraki became the new captain of this division (at the 3rd captain qualification trial). By killing Kenpachi Kiganjō, Zaraki became the eleventh individual to hold the title of Kenpachi.
The next day, during his first speech as captain, Zaraki was greeted by Ikkaku and Yumichika, who had presumably already become Shinigami and joined the division. Ikkaku told Zaraki that he had returned as he had suggested, which made Kenpachi smile. Later, they were present at the division’s battle against a Hollow caterpillar. Although the division was initially in trouble, Ikkaku offered to fight, but was stopped by Kenpachi, who decided to kill the creature himself. After defeating the Hollow caterpillar, more enemies arrived, prompting Ikkaku and Yumichika to join the fight. Although initially reluctant, Kenpachi was convinced when he realized that the two men had similar fighting styles and would therefore enjoy fighting alongside him. He subsequently allowed them to participate.
Shortly after joining Kenpachi, he had to learn kendō from Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, as he had not undergone formal sword training, having bypassed the qualifications normally required due to the way he had obtained his position. Kenpachi hated using the kendō because his fights would end too quickly with it, so he only used it if his own life was in danger.
AGENT OF THE SHINIGAMI ARC
Kenpachi makes his first appearance alongside Gin Ichimaru, and the two tease Byakuya Kuchiki about the death sentence on his sister, Rukia Kuchiki. They insinuate that he’s depressed because a noble family couldn’t bear to have a criminal as a member. Byakuya then asserts that he doesn’t think lower-class people can understand the feelings of nobles. Kenpachi responds by saying that this isn’t really the case, but that he’s very intelligent. And since he’s so intelligent, why doesn’t Byakuya let him finish off Rukia before he’s executed? Byakuya says he didn’t know Kenpachi was really capable of killing people with his level of power. Kenpachi tells him to test him, and the two prepare to fight, but Gin stops Kenpachi by tying him up and restraining him.
ARC OF THE SOUL SOCIETY
After Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends join Soul Society, Kenpachi tells Gin Ichimaru that captains should have no problem killing Ryoka. He questions Yamamoto about the Ryoka’s destination, but an invasion alarm sounds, interrupting the captains’ meeting. Kenpachi rushes outside.
He sets off in pursuit of the most powerful Ryoka, but his lieutenant, Yachiru Kusajishi, guides him in the wrong direction for some time. While lost, he stumbles upon the 4th Division compound and prevents Mayuri from “questioning” his 3rd officer, Ikkaku Madarame. After Mayuri leaves, Ikkaku informs Kenpachi that Ryoka Ichigo is getting stronger and that he knows him as a captain.
Finally, Kenpachi discovers where Ichigo is headed and waits for him. When Ichigo, Ganju Shiba and Hanatarō Yamada cross the Seireitei, they sense Zaraki’s enormous reiatsu. Kenpachi tries to determine which of the three is the strongest and finally realizes it’s Ichigo. He introduces himself to Ichigo, telling him that he has come to kill him. Zaraki engages Ichigo in combat while the others try to get away from his powerful reiatsu, but to no avail.
Zaraki is determined to fight Ichigo, no matter the circumstances, showing himself indifferent to his friends and Rukia’s fate. Seeing Ichigo’s fighting stance, Zaraki compliments him, although he notices a few openings, but he appreciates Ichigo’s spiritual pressure. Zaraki admits he understands why Ikkaku lost to Ichigo, but points out that Ichigo is still weaker than he is. He then suggests that Ichigo assume a fighting stance. Zaraki exposes his chest and asks Ichigo to attack him without restraint. Refusing to attack an unarmed opponent, Ichigo is congratulated by Zaraki, who declares that this is simply a handicap and appreciates the idea that Ichigo should save his sympathy for someone else. Zaraki advises Ichigo to kill or be killed.
Ichigo attacks Zaraki’s exposed chest directly, but this causes him little damage. Unsatisfied and disappointed, Zaraki begins to draw his Zanpakutō and announces to Ichigo that it’s his turn, asking him not to die too quickly.
When Ichigo’s hand begins to bleed, Zaraki asks him why he seems surprised that his sword can’t cut him. Zaraki pushes Ichigo away using his arm against Ichigo’s blade, explaining why Ichigo’s sword can’t hurt him. Then Zaraki pulls out his own sword and asks Ichigo to at least try to mark it. Ichigo tries to run away from Zaraki, but he can’t outrun him and bumps into him at every turn. Finally, Zaraki tires of the chase and stops to sit down. Finally, Ichigo decides to confront him, and Zaraki asks if he is prepared to die or surrender. Ichigo refuses both options, goes on the attack and finally manages to wound Zaraki. Zaraki is extremely excited to see that Ichigo is able to hurt him. He advises him not to drop his guard and to maintain his spiritual pressure, then attacks Ichigo in turn. The two continue to fight, Zaraki having the upper hand, but he is pleased to see Ichigo’s progress. He notices how Ichigo uses the sound of his bells to determine his position. Ichigo wonders if Zaraki is underestimating him because he hasn’t revealed his Zanpakutō. Zaraki then explains that his Zanpakutō has no name and was never sealed; it is currently in its true form. This revelation relieves Ichigo, who attacks again, but Zaraki stops him to explain in detail the state of his Zanpakutō.
He then pierces his Zanpakutō through and through and stabs it into his chest. Zaraki blames Ichigo for not heeding his warning not to release his spiritual pressure and for going weak thinking he had a chance of winning. Frustrated by the ease of the battle, Zaraki withdraws, thinking the fight is over. However, to his surprise, Ichigo rises to his feet with powerful spiritual pressure. Ichigo attacks Zaraki, catching him unawares once more and inflicting a severe wound on his left side, from shoulder to flank. Zaraki deflects Ichigo’s next attack and thrusts his sword into a nearby building. He bursts out laughing, becoming extremely excited, claiming that the fight has only just begun and that they should prolong it. Zaraki then rushes towards Ichigo, slashing his face with his blade to get closer to him. The battle intensified, and despite his wounds, Zaraki continued to fight. It’s at this point that Ichigo discovers the hidden engine behind Zaraki’s personality.
L’ARC HUECO MUNDO
Kenpachi joins captains Byakuya Kuchiki, Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Retsu Unohana in Las Noches after the fight between Ichigo Kurosaki and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. He steps in to help Ichigo by blocking an attack by Arrancar Tesra Lindocruz. Before Tesra realizes what’s happening to her, Kenpachi inflicts a fatal chest wound. Kenpachi has finished with Tesra and prepares to face Nnoitra Gilga. When Ichigo asks why Kenpachi is in Hueco Mundo, he simply responds by kicking Ichigo, declaring that he is heading for the battlefield. Kenpachi then explains that Captain-Commander Yamamoto has asked Kisuke Urahara to send them to Hueco Mundo to prepare for the Winter War. Finally, Nnoitra decides to attack and Kenpachi manages to block his blow, although he is impressed by Nnoitra’s strength. The two adversaries continue to fight, and Kenpachi is about to deliver a fatal blow to Nnoitra, but his sword cannot pierce the Espada’s skin. Nnoitra manages to wound Kenpachi in the left shoulder, and taunts him by claiming that his Hierro is superior to that of current and past Espadas. Despite this, Kenpachi remains undeterred and continues to fight Nnoitra with even greater ferocity, which surprises the Espada. After dodging one of Kenpachi’s attacks, Nnoitra realizes that it was dangerous for him to avoid it. However, Nnoitra persists in the fight, provoking Kenpachi until the latter remarks that he has never met an opponent whose eyes and neck could not be cut off. Kenpachi stabs at Nnoitra’s eye, but once again, the Espada seems unaffected and reveals the remains of his Hollow Mask and the hole hidden beneath his eye patch. Nnoitra then approaches and stabs Kenpachi in the chest. The two argue about Nnoitra’s inability to be cut, then Kenpachi continues to attempt to cut his opponent. Finally, Kenpachi manages to cut Nnoitra and intensifies his fight, cutting him again while tearing off part of his sword. Kenpachi then declares that he seems to have finally harnessed Nnoitra’s strength, his Hierro. The fight continues until Zaraki’s eye patch is removed.
After explaining the nature of his eye patch to Nnoitra, Kenpachi angers him. Nnoitra then asks what it’s like to see an Espada draw his Zanpakutō for the first time. But all he gets in reply is a smile from Kenpachi, who tells him that he has a beautiful reiatsu and that it’s as if the reiatsu itself is sharpening his blade. Kenpachi wastes no time and goes on the attack, but is surprised when his attacks are blocked and he receives a severe chest wound. Nnoitra then sends Kenpachi scurrying away, mocking him. Noticing that Kenpachi doesn’t react, Nnoitra turns to Yachiru, but Kenpachi recovers and manages to cut off one of his arms. When Nnoitra comments that Kenpachi is playing dead, Kenpachi notes that since Nnoitra will simply block his attacks with his many arms, all he has to do is cut them off. However, Nnoitra regenerates his arm and mocks Kenpachi. In a fit of rage, Kenpachi grabs Nnoitra and slams him to the ground, prompting Nnoitra to reveal his two hidden arms.
Nnoitra then generates another fake weapon and declares to Kenpachi that it’s over. However, Kenpachi starts laughing hysterically and continues to fight despite the injuries. Reluctantly, he decides to use kendō, although he admits it’s been a while since he’s practiced it. When Nnoitra becomes confused, Kenpachi explains that the captain-commander taught him the technique when he joined Gotei 13, but that he never appreciated it. He then asks Nnoitra if he knows that a sword is more powerful when used with two hands instead of one. Nnoitra gets bored with the conversation and charges Kenpachi, who grabs his sword with both hands and knocks it down. Kenpachi manages to land a powerful blow, inflicting Nnoitra with a fatal chest wound that nearly splits him in two. Kenpachi is surprised to see that the Espada is still alive, then turns to walk away. Nnoitra shouts at him to come back, claiming that the fight isn’t over. Kenpachi explains that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, because the blow he landed should have killed him, and he’s not wasting his time finishing off someone who can’t even defend himself. Undeterred, Nnoitra rises to his feet, telling him that the fight isn’t over and asking him to come back and continue fighting. Finally, Kenpachi gives in as Nnoitra closes in to attack him, but Kenpachi lands another blow to the chest and Nnoitra collapses to the ground. Kenpachi stands triumphant over Nnoitra, thanking him for a good fight. He then asks Ichigo what he is, reminding him that as a replacement Shinigami, his duty is to protect the city of Karakura. He tells him to take Orihime and leave, as they no longer need him in Hueco Mundo. He then asks Ichigo to take his sword and shouts that Orihime must come and heal him. However, Coyote Starrk arrives and interrupts them, narrowly avoiding Kenpachi and Ichigo’s attack.
When Aizen reveals to Ichigo his intention to destroy the city of Karakura, Ichigo flees. Kenpachi tells him not to act hastily and assures him that everything is planned. He explains to Ichigo that not only has Urahara sent the captains to Hueco Mundo, but he has also allowed the war to take place in the city of Karakura. However, when Ichigo spots Ulquiorra near Orihime, he reminds Kenpachi of their earlier conversation and makes it clear that he is mistaken. He tells Kenpachi that his mission is not to sacrifice Karakura Town, but rather to protect his friends. With that, Ichigo leaves, leaving Kenpachi behind.
Power seal of the eye:
Kenpachi wears an eye patch specially created for him by the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. This eye patch has the ability to seal off much of his reiatsu. However, given Kenpachi’s considerable power, this does not prevent him from fighting. On the contrary, it gives him an advantage over most other captains and Espada. The reason he wears it is that Kenpachi loves combat so much that he can’t afford to face most of his opponents at full power without defeating them quickly.
Reiatsu bells:
To give his opponents an extra edge, Zaraki wears bells on each strand of his hair. These bells can only be heard by enemies whose reiatsu is concentrated enough to actually outwit Zaraki.
Powers and abilities:
Kenpachi didn’t attend Shinō Academy, and he’s also the only captain who doesn’t know the name of his Zanpakutō, which prevents him from using his Bankai. In addition, he has no apparent skills (or at least no interest) in Kidō and Flash Steps. However, he more than makes up for these shortcomings with his power and stamina, making him one of Soul Society’s most powerful Shinigamis.
MAÎTRE SPÉCIALISTE DE L’ART DU SABRE
Sword mastery:
Kenpachi’s skill with his sword has reached a master’s level thanks to the lawlessness that reigns in the Zaraki district. He can string together attacks of various types (slashing, piercing) without any difficulty. His skill and strength with the sword are such that he always fights with one hand. He only uses both hands when confronted with opponents he feels can surpass him, as exemplified by Nnoitra and, temporarily, Ichigo. His slicing ability is impressive, as he can easily cut through an Espada’s Hierro, which is harder than steel, and even split a skyscraper with a flick of his wrist. As captain of the 11th division specializing in sword fighting, he is one of the most skilled, if not the most skilled, swordsmen in the entire Soul Society.
Kendō:
Kenpachi also possesses considerable knowledge and mastery of Kendō (a requirement imposed by Yamamoto before he officially joined Gotei 13), though he despises the use of skills and techniques learned from another source.
Expert in Hakuda:
Although he prefers to use his sword in combat, Kenpachi has proved time and again that he’s also very dangerous with his bare hands. He can easily catch an opponent’s attack with one hand, perform powerful kicks and takedowns, and demonstrates superb weapon-throwing skills.
Vast spiritual power:
/wp:paragraph –>
Even for a captain, his spiritual pressure is absolutely monstrous. He’s able to fight evenly with two other captains without using all his power, even when his eye patch seals his energy and his opponents release their Bankai. His spiritual power is so powerful that it can disrupt enemies’ energy attacks and paralyze and confuse people several miles away. When he releases a sufficiently strong burst of energy, he becomes visible and bright yellow, with a skull-like appearance, just like Ichigo.
Resistance to damage:
Kenpachi can also use his spiritual power as a kind of armor, enabling him to avoid being harmed by skilled or powerful opponents. This is demonstrated when Ichigo attempts to slice him at the start of their fight. Kenpachi allows Ichigo to strike him, but not only does he fail to injure him, but Ichigo’s hands begin to bleed from the impact. This can be compared to the Hierro of the Arrancars.
Shock wave:
Kenpachi has also developed sufficient control to concentrate and release his spiritual pressure in the form of a powerful shockwave. When he uses both hands, his shockwave can generate an immense beam of destruction.
Very perceptive fighter:
Despite his apparent disregard for strategy and aversion to reflection during battle, Kenpachi is actually a very perceptive fighter, displaying a level of understanding beyond what might be expected. Even Byakuya has been impressed by his ability to grasp concepts of which he has no personal experience. Kenpachi is adept at finding and exploiting weaknesses in his opponents’ techniques, as in his fight against Kaname Tōsen, where he mastered the latter’s Bankai despite being armed only with his Zanpakutō and using only the sense of touch, the only one accessible with Tōsen’s Bankai. He is also able to adapt to his opponents’ attack patterns and fighting styles to better counter them. Despite his lack of common sense, Kenpachi possesses great insight and notices aspects in people that others wouldn’t notice, as well as the motivations that drive them. For example, he correctly identifies Kaname Tōsen and Gin Ichimaru as the only captains with a fear of death. He also has razor-sharp intuition in the face of danger, enabling him to repeatedly dodge Tōsen’s attacks even while still affected by his Bankai.
An immense force:
Perhaps due to his years of experience on the battlefield, Kenpachi possesses exceptional physical strength, as evidenced by his ability to repel his opponents’ one-armed attacks. On several occasions, he has demonstrated his strength by hurling Tōsen through a building and hitting Komamura over the shoulder with one hand, as well as grabbing Ichigo’s giant sword with his bare hands and using it to attack him. He also demonstrated his strength by running into a building during his fight against Ichigo. With his bare hand, Kenpachi even managed to deflect Nnoitra Gilga’s Cero, the fifth Espada. His sword attacks are equally powerful, capable of piercing the Hierro of the Liberated State of Yammy Riyalgo and tearing off its limbs in a single blow, as well as toppling the giant Arrancar to his feet. He can even fend off an opponent’s gigantic sword with a single hand.
Although not very good at using the Flash Step, Kenpachi demonstrated incredible speed for his size and stature. In the anime, he once used what appeared to be Shunpo. We also see him using Shunpo in his fight against Yammy. Thanks to his immense raw power, Kenpachi’s powerful legs allow him to compensate for his lack of Flash Step, enabling him to move quickly to instantly bridge large distances between himself and his opponent, or even to disappear temporarily. In combat, he is able to strike with incredible speed in rapid succession, making it extremely difficult for his opponents to find an opening and counter-attack.
Immense durability:
His physical strength matches his stamina. Kenpachi easily ignores most of the wounds he suffers in battle, similar to a berserker, and shows no weakness despite the multiple slashes he receives. He even lets himself be stabbed during his fight against Tōsen, simply to grab Tōsen’s blade and break the effect of his Bankai. In his clash with Nnoitra, he suffers numerous gashes and even an impalement without it affecting his fighting abilities, although Espada notes that most people would be dead by this stage.
Zanpakutō:
Kenpachi doesn’t know the name of his Zanpakutō and is the only captain of Gotei 13 who can’t perform Bankai. After his fight against Ichigo, Kenpachi expresses his desire to learn more about his Zanpakutō to become stronger. Although he can feel the agony of not having a name, he is not yet able to communicate with his Zanpakutō. He continually tries to learn from it in order to reach a new level of power. Zangetsu notes that the disagreement between Kenpachi and his sword damages them mutually, preventing him from hearing his sword’s cry. However, during the Hueco Mundo Arc, he seems to have established some communication with his Zanpakutō after his defeat by Ichigo. During his fight against Nnoitra, he called it “him”.
Shikai:
Although he doesn’t know the name of his Zanpakutō, it’s constantly in a state of release, similar to Ichigo’s Zangetsu. The blade is much longer than a standard Zanpakutō, almost nodachi-sized, with a guard that extends inward from its center, like a shinai. The hilt is white, mostly wrapped in bandages, as is the sword’s scabbard. Although he is constantly in Shikai, Kenpachi’s Zanpakutō gives him no additional abilities due to their lack of communication. One consequence of their disagreement is that Kenpachi’s Zanpakutō ends up with little spiritual energy and becomes more vulnerable, which ironically reflects Kenpachi’s fighting philosophy of weakening himself to face his opponents on equal terms. His blade is chipped and looks worn, but is nonetheless capable of slicing through most objects. This is demonstrated when he pierces Ichigo’s Zanpakutō directly and then slices a building in half with seemingly negligible effort after unleashing the full power of his spiritual power.
Special Shikai ability: Unknown.
<Bankai: Not achieved.
