The eighth episode of the fourth season of “Attack of the Titans” finally takes time to calm down after the previous action-packed episodes. Perhaps the biggest revelation of “Assassin’s Bullet” is the reappearance of Sieg Jäger, who was thought dead after the explosion caused by Livai’s grenade in episode 7. He is shown aboard the airship in the company of members of the Exploration Battalion and surrounded by their leaders. Despite the tragic loss of Sasha, Sieg’s presence dominates this episode, confirming that he is the main traitor among the Marleyans. What’s more, a terrifying fact is brought to light: Sieg is present because of his royal blood, which is necessary for Eren to activate the true powers of the Original Titan.

Why Does Eren Need Sieg To Use The Original Titan?

Since his father injected him with the Titan serum, Eren has secretly been the possessor of the Original Titan, long before the start of Attack of the Titans. However, he is unable to access its true powers. The Original Titan is the first of the nine shape-changing Titans, originally possessed by Ymir Fritz thousands of years ago. It has the ability to transform Ymir’s “subjects”, the Eldians who succeeded him, into Titans, including those as large as the Colossal Titan, such as the Wall Titans used to build the three walls of Paradise Island. What’s more, the Original Titan can control Pure Titans through his scream, as well as manipulating the memories and physical bodies of Ymir’s subjects. This is how King Fritz erased the memories of everyone on the island.

So, why can’t Eren use these incredible powers? The reason is simple: he’s not of royal blood. To access the abilities of the Original Titan, the wearer must be in physical contact with someone of royal lineage. That’s why Sieg Jäger is indispensable. In episode 20 of season 3, entitled “That Day”, it is revealed that Sieg is the son of Dina Fritz, a descendant of the royal family, which means that Sieg also possesses this royal blood. Rather than sacrifice the only other royal person he knows, Historia, who is also the ruler and a war heroine of Paradise Island, Eren has clearly decided that using Sieg is a better solution, and Sieg may well agree.

Why Does Eren Need Sieg To Use The Original Titan?

We’ve already witnessed what happens when Eren comes into contact with a person of royal blood on at least two other occasions. The first time is when, as a pure Titan, he touches Dina Fritz (aka the “Smiling Titan” who killed his mother) in season 2 episode 12, “Scream”. After this contact, Eren accidentally emits a scream that orders the other Pure Titans nearby to devour Dina. At the time, Eren was unaware that he had just killed Sieg’s mother. Eren’s second demonstration of Original Titan powers occurs when, in season 3, episode 22, “On the Other Side of the Wall”, Historia hands out medals to members of the Exploration Battalion. When Eren kisses Historia’s hand, his mind is invaded by memories of the Fritz family through the generations.

Royal lineage is absolutely essential to fully utilize the powers of the Original Titan. However, the exact reasons are not clearly explained in the series. It’s likely that this royal lineage is required because the bearer must be directly linked, or in contact, with the Original Titan, Ymir Fritz. The Fritz family has held the crown for centuries, preserving the royal lineage. Sieg and Historia are both linked to Ymir through several generations and are the only living people we know. Ymir was the first human to receive the ability to transform into a Titan, and it seems that having his blood in your veins is essential to mastering the ultimate Titan. The other eight Changeform Titans are probably more “attenuated” versions of his original power, which explains why they are not subject to this genetic restriction.

Why Does Eren Need Sieg To Use The Original Titan?

Eren needs Sieg to use the Original Titan, and since the last episode, he’s had him. But why does Eren need to use the Original Titan? If Willy Tybur was telling the truth in previous episodes, then Eren wants to unleash the Great Earthquake – a catastrophic event that would bring tens of millions of Colossal Titans to the shores of Mahr, and then to the rest of the world. The only thing standing in the way of the two brothers is the will of King Karl Fritz, who forbids anyone, including his own family, to bring about this end-of-the-world event.

We’ve seen how far Eren is willing to go to achieve his goals, including manipulating the soldiers of the Exploration Battalion into directly attacking Mahr. Will he really go so far as to activate the true powers of the Original Titan and wreak havoc on the world? For now, it’s very difficult to say.
