If Levi had been born as Eren Yeager, he and the Attack of the Titans universe would experience significant differences. Should Levi be the protagonist?
The main character in Attack of the Titans is Eren Yeager, the impulsive youngster who was once determined to wipe out all the Titans and take revenge for his mother’s death. Eren’s reckless and aggressive attitude influenced viewers’ perception of the world of Attack of the Titans, which they explored through Eren’s eyes. But what if Levi Ackerman had inherited the role?
Levi could be envisaged as the protagonist in different ways, for example, if the story were the same, but told from Levi’s point of view, or if Levi were Grisha and Carla’s son, while Eren would only be a secondary character of lesser importance. Either way, having Levi as the central shonen hero would have a noticeable impact on Attack of the Titans in a number of ways.

10. Viewers would explore underground much faster
If Livai were the leader in Attack of the Titans, this would primarily involve an earlier exploration of Levi’s associates and his past in the story, which would reorganize Attack of the Titans’ world-building. For example, if Livai were the protagonist, this would require more in-depth development of the underworld.
In fact, it’s an underground realm located in the walled city, a dark and difficult place for most of the inhabitants. Attack of the Titans would start on a more brutal note, showing how Levi struggled as a child in such an environment. Compared to this, Eren’s childhood was literally idyllic.
9. Kenny Ackerman would be introduced earlier
In the same vein, if Livai were the protagonist instead of Eren, the character of Kenny Ackerman would make his appearance much earlier in the story. Kenny is Livai’s uncle, being her mother’s older brother, and he would be present from the start, whether through flashbacks or in person.
It was Kenny who would have raised Livai, teaching her the art of knife-wielding and survival in the unforgiving world of the underground. Instead of appearing only in season 3 as a sleek new antagonist, Kenny could make his debut when the wall comes down Maria.
8. Erwin Smith would be developed earlier
Commander Erwin Smith was a close friend of Levi’s, and it was with great reluctance that Livai allowed Erwin Smith to sacrifice his life in order to administer the titan serum to Armin Arlert and thus save him. Erwin Smith made his appearance fairly quickly in the original story, but as a protagonist, it was with Eren.
With Livai as the protagonist, Erwin would make his entrance a little earlier, and his personality as well as his relationship with Livai would be explored in much greater depth, which could make Erwin even more dynamic and captivating than he already is.
7. Levi wouldn’t have raided Revelio
In the fourth season of the anime, Eren became a radical Eldian nationalist, determined to liberate all Eldians and overthrow Marley’s Empire. He has also become an independent player in the process, acting according to his own will, whether he has the support of his friends or not.
When Eren attacked Revelio in his Titan form, he acted recklessly, resulting in the loss of Sasha Braus’s life. If Levi were in charge, he wouldn’t use his Titan so recklessly and impatiently. He’d wait for formal orders before attacking.
6. Levi’s dislike of Sieg would be more personal.
In the original story, Levi Ackerman didn’t like Sieg Yeager at all, and this wasn’t limited to their clashes on the battlefield (Sieg using his Bestial Titan). In season 4, Sieg was welcomed to Paradise Island as an Eldian companion, but Levi didn’t trust him.
If Levi were the protagonist, he wouldn’t be in charge of Sieg’s surveillance, but he would find himself meeting Sieg on several occasions and making his dislike of his half-brother clear. This would add serious personal drama to the Yeager family, as Levi is not a radical (and reckless) nationalist like Eren and Sieg. He follows the rules to the letter.
5. Levi would have discovered his Titan powers under different circumstances.
When Trost fell to the Titans, Eren already held the powers of the Titan Assassin and the Titan Original, which he discovered after being captured and devoured by a Titan. However, Levi is far too skilled a fighter to succumb to a Titan and end up in its stomach.
Instead of realizing his Titan powers inside a Titan, Levi would have discovered his abilities another way. Perhaps Grisha would have revealed them to him earlier, given that Levi is a person of great intelligence. Of course, Grisha would still have warned his son Levi against using the Titan Assassin’s power too carelessly or recklessly.
4. Eren would be killed for good
Eren is an impulsive youngster who often finds himself in perilous situations, escaping death thanks to his Attack of the Titans powers. However, if Levi possessed these powers as a protagonist, the situation would be bleak indeed for Eren.
Eren isn’t a mediocre soldier, but he lacks the skills to face and kill multiple Titans while surviving. It’s very likely that Levi, as the protagonist, would watch in dismay as Eren, a secondary character, is devoured during the Battle of Trost.
3. Hansi Zoe’s character would be fleshed out more quickly
Hange Zoë, a Girl Scout, is another of Levi’s close associates, and viewers meet her later, through Eren’s eyes. With Levi as the protagonist, viewers would get to know Hange sooner, and her character would be quickly developed.
Hange is known for her eccentric but brilliant mind, and is a Titans enthusiast in many ways. However, through Levi’s eyes, viewers would have the opportunity to see beyond this eccentricity and perceive Hange as a whole person from the very beginning of the Attack of the Titans story.
2. Mikasa would play a lesser role
Mikasa Ackerman is a relative of Levi’s, but it’s with Eren that she’s most loyal, being his childhood friend and much more. Eren once helped her fend off kidnappers, and Mikasa has since become Eren’s loyal big sister.
In the original story, she occupied an important place due to her role as the hero’s close friend and unofficial bodyguard. With Levi as the main character, Mikasa is relegated to the status of a secondary character’s friend, and if Eren can die, Mikasa is equally vulnerable. She’s more skilled than Eren in battle, but she can no longer rely solely on herself should he disappear.
1. Livai wouldn’t be so talented
Livai Ackerman is renowned for his cold, rigorous professionalism and elite fighting skills, and if he were ever the hero, little would change. However, as the protagonist of a shonen series, he would certainly be toned down somewhat.
Levi would remain competent enough to survive the Titans’ attacks and advance through the ranks, but he wouldn’t be able to quietly sneak past five Titans and take them out so easily. He’d be somewhere between his current skill level and Eren’s, should he become the main character.
