Despite some optimism and jokes about how many Titans they’d kill, the recruits quickly lost that spirit when the group found itself surrounded by Titans. Armin was forced to watch helplessly as his fellow recruits were decimated, while Eren himself ended up being devoured. Given the terror of the situation, it’s understandable that Armin’s reaction afterwards was intense.
Armin’s noble sacrifice and imminent death
Of the three main characters, Armin is the most intelligent. Unlike Mikasa and Eren, who tended to charge into the heat of battle, Armin was known for finding the best strategies. But even he couldn’t come up with a plan to defeat the Bestial, Colossal and Dreadnought Titans. Faced with this impasse, Armin chose to deceive his friends into believing he had a plan, before finally sacrificing himself. His death was one of the most poignant in the series. Not only is Armin a much-loved character, but seeing him burned alive was particularly terrifying.

The Bestial Titan, like the Colossal Titan, caused chaos wherever it appeared. The Titans began attacking soldiers in an organized fashion, popping up suddenly without any gaps in the walls. What proved even more frightening was that the Bestial Titan was able to control and create them. But what really terrified everyone was when he started to talk. The possibility that a Titan could communicate was so unexpected that it struck fear into the soldiers. They now feared what the Bestial Titan might do with this new ability.
The Feminine Titan behaves like an emotionless killer.
The Titans are scary enough in their own right, but the Female Titan managed to be the most terrifying of all. She seemed to kill for no apparent reason and showed no emotion as she did so. Her speed and strength were terrifying too, especially when she suddenly charged towards an unsuspecting scout. It was a miracle that Livai’s team could stand together as the Female Titan charged at them.
Eren’s mother was killed by the worst of the Titans.
The situation was already desperate when the Titan Colossal destroyed the Shiganshina district gate, allowing the other Titans to enter the city. But it got worse when Eren and Mikasa arrived home to find that Eren’s mother, Carla, was buried under the rubble. To make matters worse, the Titan that appeared was the most terrifying and wore a sinister smile. Even Hannes couldn’t bring himself to kill him, preferring to take Eren and Mikasa to safety rather than risk his life.
