10. How were the Titans created?
When the series was first published, one of the first questions asked by readers concerned the origin of the Titans. A young girl named Ymir fell into a tree while being chased. By coming into contact with the Source, which is the source of all living matter, she became the first Titan. She married King Fritz, leader of the Eldians, and they had three children. After her death, King Fritz demanded that his children devour their mother to inherit her abilities, and he asked his descendants to do the same. Centuries later, a serum was developed to transform Eldians into titans without the need to devour anyone. This became the standard method for creating normal, deviant titans, who could only regain their human form by devouring an heir to the nine Titans. Some Eldians were also transformed by drinking Sieg’s cerebrospinal fluid and hearing his scream.
9. Who are the nine Titans and what are their powers?
Among the most powerful characters in the series, the nine Titans possess distinct abilities that can sometimes be hard to remember. The Original Titan stands out as the strongest, able to control all Titans and Eldians, living or dead, including the other nine Titans. The Colossal Titan is characterized by his immense size, which makes his transformation extremely powerful, enabling him to burn those around him. The Bestial Titan has the ability to transform into an animal, each heir being associated with a specific animal, such as a gorilla or a bird. The Dreadnought Titan has incredibly tough skin that heirs can reinforce, transforming their bodies into a veritable suit of armor. The Jaw Titan is distinguished by its exceptional speed and incredibly sharp teeth and claws. The Titan Charrette is also fast and has greater endurance than other Titans, enabling its heirs to maintain their transformation for longer without tiring. The Female Titan has the ability to absorb the powers of the other nine Titans and is capable of summoning normal and deviant Titans. The Assaulter Titan is a formidable fighter with innate combat skills and the ability to see into the future. The Hammer Titan has the ability to create weapons with ease, while his heir can control him from a distance.
8. How did Ymir Fritz survive for centuries?
Despite her mistreatment, Ymir was infatuated with King Fritz. When he kept her by his side, he used her as a weapon to defeat his enemies. Ymir sacrificed her life to protect King Fritz when one of his attackers tried to assassinate him. However, his death was only physical.
She awoke in the Coordinates, a place where she was forced to create titans for almost 2,000 years, under the control of the Original Titans who succeeded her. Unfortunately, this proved to be even more trying than the suffering she had endured while alive in the real world, as she found herself alone, waiting for a salvation that never came and longing to finally find peace in death.
7. How did Mahr obtain seven of the nine Titans?
Karl Fritz, a descendant of Ymir, occupied the Eldian throne 100 years before the series began. Deeply disappointed by the behavior of the other shifters, and feeling sympathy for the Mahrs because of the mistreatment they had suffered for centuries, he unleashed a war that would turn the world upside down. The Mahrs succeeded in taking seven of the nine Titans. The Original Titan remained under the control of Karl, who led a group of Eldians to Paradise and erected the walls within which they would live for a century. The Tybur family supported Karl, enabling them to retain the Hammer Titan and maintain friendly relations with people around the world. The Eldians who remained in Mahr were then treated in the same way as their ancestors had treated the Mahrs, and Eldian children, such as Bertholdt, Reiner and Annie, became the warriors of Mahr, each inheriting one of the nine Titans, offering themselves and their families the promise of a better life.
6. What was Grisha’s story?
Eren’s father, Grisha, was one of the most enigmatic characters in the series until Eren, Mikasa, Hange and Levi finally discovered the contents of his cellar. In it, he had written down information about the world beyond the walls, as well as details of his personal life before arriving in Paradise. Grisha grew up in Mahr, where he had a little sister named Faye. As Eldians, they were mistreated by the Mahrs. Sadly, Faye was murdered by a Mahr officer, intensifying Grisha’s already deep hatred of his country. He later became leader of the Eldian Restorers and married Dina Fritz. Their son, Zeke, discovered that the Eldian Restorers were about to be discovered and denounced them to guarantee his and his grandparents’ safety. The Mahrs sent the Eldian Restorers to Paradise and transformed them all into titans, with the exception of Grisha. The latter met Keith outside the walls and claimed not to remember his past. When all these revelations were made, also revealing the existence of different races and places beyond the walls, fans had a hard time assimilating all this sudden new information.
5. How did Kruger know who Mikasa and Armin were?
The reason why Grisha wasn’t transformed into a normal or abnormal titan, unlike Dina and the other Eldian restorers, is explained by the fact that Eren Kruger, one of the mahr officers who led them to Paradise, was the Titan Assassin. In the shadows, he had helped the Eldian restorers and waited for the right moment to reveal his true identity. Knowing Grisha as his future successor, Kruger passed on his power to him. However, Grisha was reluctant to become a shapeshifter, especially as he had just witnessed the transformation of his wife and friends.
In order to persuade him to accept the role of Titan Assassin, Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin, who had not yet been born at the time. Grisha asked who they were, but Kruger had no knowledge of them. At the time, fans speculated that Kruger was in fact a time-travelling Eren Jaeger, unaware that the Titan Assassin’s heirs could see into the future. For a long time, this mystery remained one of the greatest questions in history.
4. How did Eren become a Titan?
When Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt attacked Paradise, Grisha found the Reiss family and took the Original Titan from Frieda. Subsequently, he found Eren and administered a titan serum, then his own son devoured him. Thus, Eren acquired the powers of both the Assailant and Original Titans, although he didn’t discover this until years later. Meanwhile, he trained as a soldier in the 104th Training Brigade. After graduating, he faced titans in the Trost district, one of whom swallowed him. However, Eren remained alive inside the titan and, driven by the desire to defeat his predators, was able to transform. Usually, when a titan devours a shapeshifter, it inherits its abilities, but given that Eren is far more powerful thanks to his own abilities and didn’t die after being eaten, he represents an exception to this rule.
3. How is Falco able to fly?
As mentioned earlier, Sieg’s cerebrospinal fluid possesses the ability to turn Eldians into titans if consumed. When Eren took him to Paradise, he used this ability to transform many Eldians into titans, among them Falco. However, shortly after his transformation, Falco devoured Porco and inherited the Titan Jaw. Unlike Porco, Ymir and Marcel, who were Jaw Titans in the series, Falco had the distinction of being able to fly. As it turned out, Sieg’s cerebrospinal fluid gave him an ability similar to that of an ancient Bestial Titan heir, enabling him to transform into a bird-like creature. What’s more, Falco has even inherited memories of this former Bestial Titan heir flying through the sky.
2. How could Eren have spoken to Armin and Mikasa without them knowing?
In the last two chapters of the series, Eren had some very mysterious conversations with Mikasa and Armin. These exchanges have given rise to different interpretations, as he behaved differently with each of them. Although these interactions were presented in chapters 138 and 139, they actually took place before these events. It turns out that before the soldiers and warriors set off to confront Eren, they had one last conversation with him. During these moments, Eren was able to say all he had to say and say goodbye to each of them individually, before erasing their memories of this encounter. After his death, he was no longer able to control their memories, allowing them to move on and understand why he had pretended to be their enemy.
1. How did Mikasa get rid of the Titans?
Despite debates among fans about the nature of her feelings, Mikasa loved Eren more than anyone. That’s why it was hard for her to watch him turn into a demon who perpetrated a massacre of thousands. Even though she and her friends fought against him, she didn’t want to kill him. However, when the fateful moment finally arrived, she knew she had to let him go in order to save the world. Ymir witnessed the act of Mikasa beheading Eren, and seeing that Mikasa was able to kill Eren despite her love for him, made it possible to defy King Fritz and eliminate the Titans. Thanks to Mikasa’s actions, the Titans disappeared and Eren was unable to cause any more suffering. She became the savior of the world, allowing everyone to regain their freedom.
