Eren Jäger is currently the most powerful Titan Shifter in the anime. Here’s how his abilities have evolved since he inherited the Titan Assailant.
Since the first season of Attack of the Titans, Eren Jäger has gone from strength to strength. His commitment to the army and training with three-dimensional maneuvering equipment have put his normal body in better shape than most, and he’s only gotten stronger since. However, this growth is nothing compared to the progress made by his Titan Assassin and what he’s capable of in season 4.
During his first transformation in season 1, Eren had no control over his Titan form. In this unleashed state, the Titan Assassin was no stronger than a similarly sized, and equally resilient, Pure Titan. As a result, his Titan limbs frequently broke when he hit Pure Titans, and he could easily be overwhelmed by a relatively small number of them if they attacked him en masse. However, once Eren took control of the Titan Assailant, everything changed. His strength was multiplied, enabling him to lift a boulder, a feat Mikasa considers impossible for a human of proportional size.
Despite his success in controlling the Titan Assassin on one occasion, Eren’s shapeshifting powers were still far from consistent. With the aim of transforming him into a more effective weapon for humanity, Hansi Zoe and other elite members of the Exploration Battalion teamed up to help him master his new powers over the following seasons. They succeeded in identifying the trigger for his transformation, namely blood, which enables Eren to invoke his Titan form at will. Eren also tried to transform twice in a row, but after initial success, his second attempt only resulted in a mutilated and disfigured form.
The next improvements in Eren’s power are not the result of his training, but rather of the fact that he found himself in situations where his method of confronting the Pure Titans, which consists of striking without thinking, didn’t work. When he faced the Female Titan in the Forest of Giant Trees, he was forced to adopt a more tactical approach to combat, as Annie had more experience as a shapeshifter and was a more skilled fighter. These tactics were put to the test when Eren faced the Dreadnought Titan. After realizing that his fists were doing little or no damage to Reiner, he once again changed his fighting style. Although the Titan was physically weaker and less resilient, Eren’s new fighting style, involving tackles and holds, would have led to Reiner’s defeat had the Colossal Titan not intervened.
During his experiments with Hansi and the Exploration Battalion, Eren repeatedly tried to replicate the Titans’ hardening ability that Annie had demonstrated in their battle. They thought this might be the solution to plugging the hole in Shiganshina, but Eren didn’t get the chance to recreate the crystal. Eventually, he obtained the hardening ability after ingesting Rod Reiss’s vial of “Armor” fluid when he was trying to protect his Battalion comrades. The effect was immediate: he hardened his entire Titan body, protecting himself and the rest of the Exploration Battalion.
Now able to use hardening, Eren made the plan to reconquer the Maria Wall possible. He continued training with Hansi to increase his stamina and master his new hardening abilities. The result? Eren successfully used localized hardening before the battle of Shiganshina and twice transformed into a fully functional Titan Assailant, one of which he hardened to seal the hole in the wall. Eren’s localized hardening also enabled him to concentrate the crystal at his knuckles, adding far more strength to his punches and protecting him from damage caused by the force exerted. Thanks to this new enhancement, even Reiner’s Dreadnought Titan could no longer withstand a single punch from Eren.
Four years have passed in the Attack of the Titans universe between seasons 3 and 4, and since the start of the fourth season, Eren has had total control over his shapeshifting abilities. In particular, he can regulate the healing speed of his wounds, healing wounds that would normally take years to heal and regenerating entire limbs in a matter of seconds. In his battle against the Hammer Titan and the Jaw Titan, he demonstrates accelerated healing in his Titan form. He also manifests new Titan forms three times in a single fight, surprising even the other Titan Shifters present. Eren also shows an even greater aptitude for combat, using all the Titan fighting techniques he has learned so far and ingeniously exploiting his opponents against each other. He triumphs over the Titan Hammer by devouring its holder, acquiring the ability to alter the landscape and create structures using hardening. Eren now possesses three Titan Shifter powers: the Original Titan, the Assailant Titan and the Hammer Titan.
The Titan Assassin may also possess another ability that Eren has yet to discover. At the end of season 3, we learned that Eren Kruger – the one who passed on the Titan to Grisha, Eren’s father – knew about Mikasa and Armin, even though they hadn’t yet been born. Titan shapeshifters have access to the memories of their previous holders, which is common, but the ability of foresight could be exclusive to the holder of the Titan Assassin. This mysterious new power could have important implications for Eren in the future.
