There are many great characters in Attack of the Titans, but few are as important as Grisha Jäger. Without him, the story would have been very different, for Eren and Sieg would not have been born, the Titan Original would not have been taken from the Reiss family and the Exploration Battalion would never have discovered the truth about Paradise and Mahr.
Despite his essential position in the franchise as a whole, Grisha is often underestimated and perceived as a villain by many fans of the series. Some may even forget certain elements of his story, but that won’t be the case anymore. Here’s some essential information fans might not know about Grisha.

Faye’s tragedy
When he was young, Grisha had a little sister named Faye. One day, the two of them ventured unauthorized into an area off-limits to Eldians. When they were discovered, Grisha offered to be punished in their place. Since he was the one who had come up with the idea of going there, he agreed to take on Faye’s punishment too. One of the officers who had caught them promised to take Faye home before Grisha did. However, Faye never returned that day and was found dead the following day. From that moment on, Grisha developed a deep aversion to the world around her and harbored a desire to change it to prevent such tragedies from happening again, like the murder of her little sister.
Hating her father
After Faye’s body was discovered, the officers asked Grisha’s father to educate her on the history of the Marleyans and Eldians. According to Marley’s people, Ymir and the Eldians had tortured them and forced them to conceive children with them, in order to pass on the powers of the Titans. The harsh treatment inflicted on the Eldians was seen as revenge for the acts committed by their ancestors. Grisha’s father, obeying the officers’ demands rather than seeking justice for his daughter, aroused deep resentment in Grisha towards her own father.
The Eldian Resistance
Growing up, Grisha found a group of people who shared her convictions. The Eldian Resistance was a secret organization that aspired to the same rights as the Marleyans. They eventually discovered that Ymir had in fact used his powers to found civilization. Grisha eventually became the leader of this group, accompanied by Dina.
Love at first sight for Dina
Dina Fritz was a descendant of the Eldia royal family. When Karl Fritz led his people to Paradise, some of her relatives remained in Marley. Dina joined the Eldian Resistance and fell in love with Grisha.
The two married, had a son and lived a happy life until the government discovered the group and turned all its members, except Grisha, into Titans. Dina found herself inside the walls and devoured Carla, Grisha’s second wife.
He raised a monster
When Marley’s government revealed its intention to use Eldian children to control the Titans and promised that the children’s families would get rights in return, Grisha and Dina orchestrated the entry of their son, Sieg, into the Warrior Unit. They hoped he would become a Titan and have the power to save them. However, they were shocked when Sieg revealed his parents’ intentions to the government. Sieg then became one of Marley’s greatest warriors and gained the power of the Bestial Titan. When he went to Paradise, he massacred members of the Exploration Battalion, becoming one of their greatest enemies. However, Grisha reproached himself for having pushed his son to adhere to his own convictions, just as his own father had done before.
The Titan Assailant
When Dina and the members of the Eldian Resistance were transformed into Titans, Grisha was saved by Eren Kruger, the man who had once punished him on the day his sister died. Kruger was also a spy working alongside the Eldian Resistance and was the bearer of the Titan Assassin. Approaching the end of her thirteen years, Grisha sought to avenge her sister and fight back against the other agents around them. Kruger passed on the power of the Titan Assassin and ordered him to travel to Paradise, find someone he could trust and pass on the Titan’s powers within the next thirteen years. Grisha accomplished his mission, finally passing the Titan on to his son, Eren Jäger.
Meeting Keith
On her way to the walls, Grisha crossed paths with Keith. Grisha claimed to have lost most of his memories, and Keith helped him start a new life in Paradise by accompanying him to Shiganshina and introducing him to Carla. The relationship between Keith and Grisha was very complex.
At first, they had a deep respect for each other, Grisha admiring the Exploration Battalion. Over the years, however, they grew apart. Keith became the commander of the Exploration Battalion and instructor of the 104th Training Brigade, while Grisha started his family and fulfilled his mission.
He saved Shiganshina
Returning to Marley, Grisha followed in his father’s footsteps and became a doctor. When he arrived in Paradise, one of the few things he claimed to remember was his medical profession. Grisha then used his skills to save all the citizens of Shiganshina when they fell ill. His relationship with Carla began after he saved her parents. Hannes, a member of the Garrison, was even keen to repay his debt to Grisha for saving their lives. However, it would take Grisha a long time to be able to fulfill this wish.
The Titan Original
At the end of their thirteen years of service, Bertholt, Annie and Reiner, three of Sieg’s comrades in the Warrior Unit, have arrived in Paradise. Using their Colossal, Female and Dreadnought Titans respectively, they attacked Grisha’s town and family. The latter found Karl’s descendants and Dina’s distant relatives. He fought Frieda, the carrier of the Original Titan. After defeating her and her siblings, he obtained the power of the Original Titan and set out to find his son. Once Eren was found, he transformed him into a titan and had him devoured, thus transferring the powers of both the Titan Assassin and the Original Titan to Eren.
His regrets
In one of the latest manga developments, it was revealed that Grisha could see Eren as an adult thanks to the Titan Assassin’s power to view future memories. It was Eren who asked Grisha to kill the members of the Reiss family and take the Original Titan. Grisha was also able to see Sieg and apologized for the way he had neglected his son. He warned Sieg that everything would go according to Eren’s wishes. However, since Eren would only allow Grisha to see certain memories, he wasn’t sure he was doing the right thing. In any case, he acted on Eren’s instructions and hoped he wouldn’t regret the way he’d treated another son when he devoured him.
