The story of Attack of the Titans has been marked by many duos, but certain pairs of characters have been more significant than others.
Some characters are timeless and will remain in our memories forever. Throughout the series, fans have had the pleasure of discovering the most iconic duos. Series creator Hajime Isayama has done a remarkable job in creating these varied dynamics between characters.
This makes the story even more captivating. Fans have also witnessed some of the most surprising duos. Who could have imagined that Eren and Livai would work so well together? Here are 10 duets from Attack of the Titans that either work perfectly or seem totally meaningless.

A perfect duo: Reiner & Bertholt
Despite being the enemies of the series’ protagonists, it’s hard not to admire the friendship between Reiner and Bertholt. Although the two are very different, they have a mutual respect for each other.
Reiner is very loud and can sometimes be a bit rude, while Bertholt is gentle and shy. Yet he’s a little more approachable than Reiner when it comes to talking to him. Their personalities are so divergent that one wonders how they ever became friends. But perhaps it’s precisely this difference that makes it work.
This doesn’t make sense: Jean & Connie
It’s rather disconcerting to see Jean and Connie working so harmoniously together in the early episodes of Attack of the Titans. Jean is notoriously insensitive, while Connie is a bit of a class buffoon. Eren and Jean have very similar personalities, but they just can’t stand each other.
However, Connie and Jean have a pretty solid relationship. While Conny and Annie distract the Titan, Jean manages to escape. In fact, when Conny rescues him, Jean berates him for doing so. Either way, it’s reassuring to know that they can work effectively together.
A perfect duo: Eren and Armin
Eren Yeager and Armin Arlert have been best friends from an early age, so it’s natural that their bond is so powerful. Eren will do anything for his friend, even defying his superior. Armin also stood by Eren when everyone wanted to condemn him because of his Titan powers. They make each other better.
Throughout the series, Armin has shown great courage. Previously, many perceived him as someone easily frightened. For example, he risks his life by attacking Bertholt to give Eren time to repair the wall.
This doesn’t make sense: Livai & Eren
Although Livai and Eren were brought together under unconventional circumstances, their friendship remains questionable, to put it mildly. Livai is calm and very tactical, while Eren is very impulsive. In fact, Livai blames Eren for his impulsiveness.
For example, Livai stops Eren from devouring Annie and calls him an idiot for almost destroying the evidence. Despite this, the two are still willing to work together.
A perfect duo: Eren & Mikasa
Often, romantic relationships (especially in anime) can seem fleeting. Not so for Eren and Mikasa. Mikasa isn’t just in love with Eren for fun. He saved her from two terrible individuals when they were very young.
Mikasa admires Eren’s willingness to defend anyone, even if he has to suffer the consequences. She protects Eren because she knows he would do the same. Their relationship goes beyond the juvenile aspect, it’s something deeper.
This doesn’t make sense: Reiner & Annie
The reason why the plot of Annie, Reiner and Bertholt as traitors was so effective lies in the fact that the relationship between Annie and the others lacked coherence.
Annie and Reiner have no affinity, so it makes sense that they don’t talk much. They always seem to argue when they’re together. Even when they do exchange words, no one really seems to notice.
A perfect duo: Dot Pixis & Erwin
Erwin Smith and Dot Pixis make a formidable team when taking on a government. Smith is summoned by the Chancellery regarding a murder involving his division, the Exploration Battalion. During the summons, the chancellery considers him a traitor and orders his execution. Shortly afterwards, a soldier interrupts the meeting to announce that the Colossal and Dreadnought Titans have breached one of the walls.
However, this is actually a ploy, orchestrated by Erwin Smith and Dot Pixis, to highlight the Chancellery’s disinterest in the citizens. And the plan is a success. Dot Pixis agrees that Smith should be punished for his crimes, but finds it deplorable that their own government should turn its back on its people, neglecting to protect the walls where they live. As a result, they are staging a coup. What’s more, their main concern is the well-being of the population. Pixis decides to go along with the plan because he knows Smith is a man of integrity who can be trusted.
This doesn’t make sense: Livai & Hansi
Given his personality, it’s hard to believe Livai Ackerman could have friends. That’s why it’s strange to see him laughing and smiling while chatting with Hansi Zoe. She’s so outgoing, while Livai is, well, Livai. The only person he shows respect to is Commander Erwin. Livai can be a bit obsessive, while Hansi can sometimes forget to take a bath.
Despite their differences, these two have accomplished so much together. They make a formidable duo, which may seem arbitrary given their personalities.
A perfect duo: Erwin and Livai
The only reason for Livai’s actions is her relationship with Commander Erwin. It is precisely because of Erwin Smith that Livai joins the Exploration Battalion. This perfectly illustrates the relationship between Livai and Erwin Smith. If it doesn’t come from a direct order from Erwin Smith himself, Levi won’t follow it.
This is loyalty incarnate. No matter how insane Smith’s plans, Livai will always support him. For example, on Smith’s orders, Livai sacrifices several members of his team to capture the Female Titan. Livai knows he can count on his commander.
This doesn’t make sense: Historia and Ymir
Even before discovering Historia’s royal lineage, it seemed unlikely that Ymir and Historia would become close. Ymir has more of a tomboy personality, while Historia fits the archetypal girl.
It’s important to point out that friendships between people with contradictory personalities are formed all the time. The relationship between Ymir and Historia came about unexpectedly. Their friendship is quite remarkable and seems genuine. Historia kills her first Titan because she wanted to protect Ymir.
