APPARENCE OF TEN SHIN HAN
Ten Shin Han is a tall, bald and very muscular man. His most striking feature is undoubtedly his third eye, inherited from his extraterrestrial ancestors (although some sources claim that the third eye was obtained through intense meditation). The third eye is very real, as evidenced by his ability to move it, close it and even shoot laser beams of ki from it. If you want to know more, find out why Ten Shin Han has three eyes here. 👁️
Ten Shin Han is not naturally bald, contrary to the claims of his former mentor, Master Shen. The latter claims that he shaves his head like Krillin, although he has never been seen with hair. Another remarkable feature is the large scar on the right side of his chest, extending from his collarbone to his abdomen. Ten got this scar at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, during his fight against his former mentor, the mercenary Tao Pai Pai, who caught him off guard with his illegal, hidden-blade attack, leaving an indelible mark. 🔪
Throughout the series, he has worn numerous costumes, but the most iconic is undoubtedly the Gi he sports during the Cyborg saga: a loose-fitting green one-shoulder tank top, baggy green pants, red and green bracelets, black boots with yellow covers and a red belt. Ten’s battle outfit usually consists of a Hanfu-style dress with loose pants and boots, unlike the Manchu-style clothing worn by most Chinese characters in the series. 🕺
In “Battle of Gods” and in the manga version of the Universe 6 and Survival of the Universe sagas, Ten wears a mainly green, black and red-brown ceremonial outfit. In “The Resurrection of ‘F'” and in the anime version of the Universe 6 and Survival of the Universe sagas, he sports a mainly black, pale yellow and red-brown version of this outfit. 🧎
TEN SHIN HAN’S PERSONALITY
Ten Shin Han was initially a cold, ruthless warrior, caring little for the lives of others, with the exception of his classmates and mentors. This brutality is clearly visible when he crushes the leg of Yamcha and another fighter at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. However, he found in Chaozu a lifelong best friend whom he cared for deeply, and vice versa. He greatly admired his mentor, the mercenary Tao Pai Pai, and aspired to become a famous assassin like him. Under the influence of Master Roshi and Goku, he changed his ways and became one of the most respected warriors on the planet. Before joining the camp of the good guys, he even intended to kill Goku at the World Martial Arts Tournament, considering him a threat to himself and his companions. 👊
However, this mentality soon changes when he realizes that he disapproves of the brutal methods employed by his masters, Shen and Tao Pai Pai. He goes off to train on his own and soon becomes a powerful ally of Goku and the others. His personality evolves from that of a brutal killer to that of an honorable warrior who cares deeply for those he strives to protect. He sometimes tries to repent his past brutality, but eventually moves beyond these horrible memories and looks to the future. He’s very stern and serious, doesn’t joke around and doesn’t make as many mistakes as most other Z-Fighters. 😠
During Dragon Ball Z, we see him striving to become a powerful warrior and still hopes to surpass Goku one day. Ten hates standing on the sidelines while his more powerful friends and allies take on opponents far stronger than him, and will always do whatever he can to help them, even though he knows it will probably put him in mortal danger. Although he’s made new friends, Ten remains a loner and isn’t very socially active, spending most of his time training to become a better fighter, although he still attends Bulma’s parties and interacts well with the other guests. Although he has let go of his grudge against Goku and the others, he can still feel animosity towards people he considers unrepentant. Such is the case with Vegeta, whom he blames for almost destroying the Earth. He continues to regard him as an enemy even after Vegeta joins the Z-Fighters (although he later learns that the Saiyan prince himself was Freezer’s slave). However, he forgives Vegeta after realizing his crucial role in defeating Petit Buu. 👌
Ten fights bravely and manages to defeat a Saibaman when the Saiyans arrive. He then confronts Nappa, during which Chaozu sacrifices himself in vain, pushing Ten Shin Han to give everything he has in a final attack, which fails. Ten Shin Han dies a hero’s death, but is later resurrected by Porunga. During the conflict with the Cyborgs, Ten repeatedly puts his life in danger by helping his friends against the mechanical creatures, notably by using his life force to keep Cell at bay, almost sacrificing his own life to allow C-16 and C-18 to escape, saving the Earth from certain destruction. When Super Buu threatens Earth’s existence seven years later, Ten arrives just in time to save Gohan from certain death. 😮
In Dragon Ball Super, Ten’s personality remains virtually unchanged, and he shows his mettle in battling the God of Destruction Beerus as well as Freezer’s henchmen. Since opening his own dojo in the Survival of the Universe saga, he has proved a serious and strict teacher, but patiently awaits the development of his pupils. During the Tournament of Power, Ten’s courageous and noble actions saved his entire team from the Universe 2 sniper duo. Impressed by his bravery and noble will, Beerus congratulates Ten on his fighting spirit after his elimination, telling him he has nothing to be ashamed of, having earned the respect of the God of Destruction. 🙌
He’s not very familiar with technology or the current age, to the point where he doesn’t even have a cell phone. This was a problem during the Galactic Patrol prisoner saga, when the Z-Fighters had no way of contacting Ten to inform him of growing problems. It’s revealed later in the same saga that Ten isn’t good at insulting people, struggling to find the words to hurt Bikkura Quoitur. 📞
BIOGRAPHY OF TEN SHIN HAN BEFORE DBZ
His physical appearance is unique and reminiscent of his ancestors, the Three-Eyed Clan. He has the ability to grow arms behind his back and divide himself into four people, as well as firing laser beams from his third eye. Because of his upbringing by Master Shen, Ten lost the ability to use the many powers of his third eye to good effect. In his early years, Ten joined the Crane School run by Master Shen. There he learned powerful ki-based techniques such as solar flare, Dodon beam and Tri-Beam, while Master Shen’s younger brother, the mercenary Tao, taught him defense techniques. 🤼♀️
Saga of Baba the Seer
In the anime, Ten Shin Han and Chaozu first meet Goku when they pretend to save the villagers of InoShikaCho. However, when Goku discovers their imposture, he tries to unmask them by making the supposedly dead beast laugh. Unfortunately, Ten Shin Han turns the tables on Goku, claiming that it is he who is associated with InoShikaCho. As a result, Goku is driven out of the village, despite showing mercy to the creatures. 😯
Later, accompanied by their master, Ten Shin Han and Chaozu travel by boat to Papaya Island to take part in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. It is at this tournament that they really come into their own. As the star pupil of the Crane School run by Master Shen, Ten Shin Han is tasked with defeating the pupils of his long-time rival, Master Turtle Genius. During the elimination battles, Ten Shin Han confronts Nam and leaves him unconscious, giving Goku and his friends a clear warning of the threat they pose. Ten easily overcomes the remaining elimination challenges and qualifies for the tournament final. 🤞
Taking advantage of Chaozu’s mental powers to manipulate the fighting order in the quarter-finals, Ten Shin Han decides to face Yamcha, a student of the Genius Turtle with whom he has maintained hostilities since the start of the tournament. Although Yamcha fights better than expected, he doesn’t pose a major threat to Ten Shin Han. The latter defeats him and, excessively, breaks his leg when he is already unconscious. Shortly after this fight, during the match between Krilin and Chaozu, Ten Shin Han learns of the death of his martial arts master, Tao, at the hands of Goku, another student of the Great Turtle. From that moment on, the tournament becomes for Ten Shin Han a matter of revenge rather than victory. 💪
Ten Shin Han’s next opponent is the winner of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Jackie Chun. This fight represents his first real challenge. Jackie Chun not only challenges him physically, but also tries to steer him away from the wrong path. With Master Shen’s help, Ten Shin Han discovers that Jackie Chun is actually Master Roshi in disguise, and uses his trademark Kamehameha technique against him. Although he doesn’t reveal his full power, Master Roshi admits defeat and jumps out of the ring. Ten Shin Han then seeks a meeting with Master Roshi to understand why he gave up. Master Roshi explains that it’s time to make way for the younger fighters. 🏋️♀️
The fight between Ten Shin Han and Goku takes place next. Despite being a powerful opponent, Ten Shin Han manages to hold his own against Goku. Suddenly, however, Goku freezes in place, unable to throw a punch or dodge an attack. Ten Shin Han soon discovers that Chaozu is rigging the fight on Master Shen’s orders and asks his friend to stop, wishing for a fair match. Master Shen takes this as a challenge and orders Ten Shin Han to kill Goku. However, for the first time, Ten Shin Han thinks of his own desires and humbly refuses, thus rejecting the path of an assassin as predicted by Master Roshi. Furious, Master Shen orders Chaozu to kill both Ten Shin Han and Goku. When Chaozu refuses, Master Shen threatens him with death. It’s at this point that Master Roshi intervenes, expelling Master Shen from the stadium with a Kamehameha, allowing Ten Shin Han and Goku to concentrate on their fight. 🤼
The fight between Ten Shin Han and Goku continues, and Ten Shin Han deploys his two extra arms to fight Goku. He grabs Goku’s arms and legs with his four arms, then inflicts powerful blows to his stomach and head, causing Goku great pain. Although he repeats this technique several times, Goku manages to free himself by hitting Ten Shin Han in the face with his tail. Goku then grabs Ten Shin Han’s legs, also inflicting pain. Despite this, Ten Shin Han pushes Goku away, and the fight continues. 🤜
Finally, Ten Shin Han decides to end the match using his ultimate technique, the Tri-Beam. He warns Goku of the impending explosion and asks him to avoid it, planning to force him out of the ring instead. Ten Shin Han uses his attack and completely destroys the arena. However, thanks to his warning, Goku manages to dodge the explosion by leaping high into the air. At this point, Ten Shin Han is convinced of his victory, as he can fly while Goku cannot. However, Goku uses a final Kamehameha to propel himself at Ten Shin Han like a rocket. Both fighters crash to the ground, with Goku slightly ahead. Goku is hit by a truck and lands first, while Ten Shin Han lands a moment later, winning the tournament. 🥇
After the match, Ten Shin Han receives a reward of 500,000 Zeni and offers Goku half the prize, acknowledging that he would have won had circumstances been different. He also apologizes to Yamcha for using excessive force in their fight, and the two men agree to meet again at the next tournament. Master Roshi offers Ten Shin Han to stay at the Kame house, but the latter refuses, declaring that he cannot follow the teachings of another master, even if his own master has betrayed him. 🗡
King Piccolo Saga
However, the joy is short-lived as Krilin, a student of the Genius Turtle, is unexpectedly killed while separated from the group. Along with his body, a mysterious note is found. Master Roshi explains to everyone that it comes from an incredibly powerful Demon King, King Piccolo. He was supposed to have been sealed centuries ago by Master Roshi’s master using the Mafuba technique, but now seems to be free again. Hearing this, Goku, who hasn’t fully recovered from his fight with Ten Shin Han, angrily rushes to take revenge. 😡
Aware of the gravity of the situation, Ten Shin Han volunteers to help as much as he can. He learns of the existence of the seven Dragon Balls, which, when brought together, can summon Shenron and grant any wish. Together with Chaozu and Master Roshi, he soon embarks on a quest to collect them. However, they notice that King Piccolo is also looking for them. 😱
Before King Piccolo can confront them, Master Roshi unexpectedly knocks out Ten Shin Han and hides him in a cave. Master Roshi plans to use the evil containment technique against King Piccolo, and thinking that Goku is already dead, he considers Ten Shin Han the planet’s last bastion in case of failure. Semi-conscious, Ten Shin Han can only bear witness to Master Roshi’s final failure against the mighty Demon King, and sees him die. King Piccolo wastes no time in gathering the Dragon Balls and summoning the Dragon. In an act of desperation, Ten Shin Han orders Chaozu to quickly make the wish to destroy King Piccolo before he can make his own wish. Unfortunately, Chaozu is quickly killed by King Piccolo in mid-sentence, an act Ten Shin Han can only watch in horror. King Piccolo then fulfills his wish and destroys the Dragon, knowing that this is the only thing that can stop him. 🐉
Once he had regained his mobility, Ten Shin Han mastered the Mafuba technique he had learned from observing Master Roshi. After many trials, he manages to master the Wave of Evil Containment and travels to Central City to confront King Piccolo. On arrival, he is horrified to discover that the urn designed to imprison King Piccolo is cracked and unusable. Knowing he can’t use the Mafuba technique, Ten Shin Han decides to challenge King Piccolo regardless. 💪
King Piccolo, not seeing Ten Shin Han as a worthy opponent, creates a new servant, Tambour, his most powerful son to date, to deal with him. Tambour quickly dominates the fight, but Ten Shin Han manages to knock him down, giving him the opportunity to use the Wave of Evil Containment on King Piccolo. However, Tambour gets in the way of the explosion, preventing Ten Shin Han from sealing King Piccolo. King Piccolo then destroys him. Tambour is about to finish off Ten Shin Han when Goku intervenes and saves him, killing him with a single kick. Stunned by Goku’s new power, Ten Shin Han can only watch as Goku and King Piccolo battle it out. When the fight seems to be turning in Goku’s favor, King Piccolo decides to take Ten Shin Han hostage to force Goku to paralyze himself. He threatens to kill Ten Shin Han if Goku doesn’t obey. After severely wounding Goku, King Piccolo pushes Ten Shin Han aside, but Goku proves tougher than expected and uses one last attack to kill the Demon King. 💀
The battle over, Ten Shin Han returns to the Kame house with Goku’s friends Launch, Yamcha and Bulma. All his wounds are healed by Launch, and he thanks her. After learning that Goku will be trained by God in Heaven for three years, Ten Shin Han promises to train harder than ever to close the gap between himself and Goku. 💪
Saga of Piccolo Jr.
Ten Shin Han continues his training, redoubling his efforts after learning that Goku is being trained by Kami, the Earth God. Once the dragon is restored, a wish is made to bring back to life all those killed by King Piccolo. Ten Shin Han then trains with Yamcha, Krilin and Chaozu. Together, they head for the Karin Tower and train with him before going their separate ways. 😺
Three years after the defeat of King Piccolo, Ten Shin Han, Yamcha, Chaozu and Krilin return to compete in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Ten Shin Han is somewhat surprised to see Goku now a teenager and hopes he’s even more powerful than before. However, he is shocked to see Piccolo Jr. present and realizes that the Demon King’s essence has survived. Goku asks him to keep this information secret for the time being, so as not to spread panic. 😱
During the draw to determine the fighting order, Ten Shin Han asks Chaozu to manipulate the cards so that no one from the group (Ten Shin Han, Yamcha, Goku, Chaozu and Krilin) nor Piccolo Jr. will face each other in the preliminaries. The other members of the group are unaware of this manipulation and simply think it’s a coincidence. 🍀
The first fights proceed as usual, with the group quickly eliminating their opponents. Ten Shin Han feels a terrible anxiety when he realizes that something has happened to Chaozu. He rushes to the scene and finds Chaozu badly injured and unconscious, which angers him. Chaozu’s opponent turns out to be the mercenary Tao Pai Pai, now cybernetically repaired. This comes as a great surprise to Ten Shin Han, who thought Tao was dead. Tao explains that, after his apparent death in the fight against Goku, he has been rebuilt as a half-man, half-machine, and seeks revenge on both Goku and the Crane School “traitor” Ten Shin Han. Ten Shin Han claims that he didn’t betray Master Shen, but realized that Shen’s teachings were wrong. He gladly accepts his former mentor’s challenge, wishing to avenge his best friend. 💪
Their wish is granted, as Ten Shin Han and Tao Pai Pai are the first of the eight finalists to face off. After a moment’s silence, Tao attacks Ten Shin Han, but the latter quickly dodges and counterattacks, knocking Tao to the ground. Ten Shin Han forgives the mercenary for what he has done to Chaozu and asks him to surrender. Tao refuses and continues his assault, although he is clearly outmatched by Ten Shin Han. After Ten Shin Han grabs Tao’s wrist and tries to pull him out of the ring, the cyborg performs a surprise maneuver by detaching his mechanical hand, revealing a knife which he quickly uses to wound Ten Shin Han, leaving a permanent scar. Although he’s disqualified for using a weapon, Tao doesn’t care, as his real aim in the tournament is to kill Ten Shin Han and Goku. Tao quickly drops his other hand, revealing a cannon, and fires a powerful wave of Super Dodon at Ten Shin Han, claiming he has no chance of survival. However, Ten Shin Han manages to nullify the attack with his Kiai, then defeats him with a single punch to the stomach. He then retrieves Tao’s unconscious body and presents it to Master Shen, who is watching him, telling him to take his brother and leave, and never to disturb them again. 🔪
Ten Shin Han’s next fight is the one he’s been waiting for, a rematch with Goku. The fight begins with plenty of quick exchanges and turns out to be fairly evenly balanced, but Ten Shin Han has an advantage in terms of raw speed. However, this changes after Goku takes off his weighted clothes, making him fast enough to steal Ten Shin Han’s belt without the latter realizing it. Realizing that he won’t be able to defeat Goku physically, Ten Shin Han uses a new technique he’s created, cloning, and divides himself into four identical copies of himself. The four Tens scatter to the four corners of the ring and each fire a powerful Ki blast cannon towards the center, where Goku stands, causing a large explosion that Goku must avoid by jumping. The Tens then quickly fire, this time from their third eye, at Goku, sending him back into the ring. The Tens warn Goku to give up before he hurts himself. Goku refuses, of course. 😎
This time, Goku dodges the rays and uses the Sun Bite technique against the clones, blinding them. He quickly eliminates them, returning them to their unique state. Goku claims that Ten Shin Han’s new technique has a critical weakness, as Ten’s power is divided between each double. With the fight over, Ten Shin Han looks forward to their next confrontation, suspecting that Goku is holding back a little longer. ☀
Ten Shin Han plays a minor role in the following fights, observing Goku fight Piccolo Jr. who seems to be all-powerful. He offers his help on several occasions, but Goku refuses, wanting to face the demon alone. Ten Shin Han also helps evacuate their friends by creating a pit in the ground where they can take shelter from the hyper-explosive demonic wave, one of Piccolo Jr.’s most devastating attacks ✨
When Goku appears to be defeated, most of his bones are broken and he’s about to be killed. Ten Shin Han reluctantly accepts Kami’s order to kill God, Piccolo’s benevolent double, as this would result in the demon’s death. However, Goku stops him, saying there’s no need to go to such extremes. He then escaped the demon’s attack and finally managed to defeat him with a surprise attack. After Piccolo Jr.’s defeat, Ten Shin Han takes part in the tournament’s victory celebration and even shares a few laughs with Goku and Roshi. He is also shocked, like the others, by Goku’s decision to give the demon a Senzu bean to heal his wounds. Afterwards, he watches Goku and Chi-Chi fly away from the world tournament area on the flying cloud. 🙌
TEN SHIN HAN IN DRAGON BALL Z
LA SAGA DES SAIYANS
Five years after the tournament, Ten Shin Han learns that Goku died in battle against an incredibly powerful warrior called Raditz, a Saiyan who was Goku’s older brother. What’s more, two other Saiyans, both more powerful than Raditz, are heading for Earth and will arrive in about a year’s time. 😱
Need a refresher on this character? Check out our article on Raditz!
At first, Launch develops a certain interest in Ten Shin Han and pursues him wherever he goes. Ten wastes no time and is invited, along with Yamcha, Chaozu, Yajirobe and Krillin, to train with God so he can help Goku when he returns in a year’s time from his training with Kaio. During this time, Ten Shin Han and the other fighters on Earth confront Shorty and Scarface, two Illusion Saiyans they met on planet Vegeta, using Kami’s Time Room to turn back time. Ten Shin Han and his friends are vastly outmatched by the Saiyans. The experience frightens Ten Shin Han and the others, so they continue to train as hard as they can. 🤼
When the Saiyans finally arrive, the Z-Fighters decide to hold them back until Goku arrives. Ten Shin Han and Chaozu eventually find the location of the Saiyans, Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin, and join them, soon joined by Yamcha. Vegeta decides to play with his opponents and asks Nappa to cultivate several Saibamens in the ground. Knowing they had to buy time, the Z-Fighters agreed and Ten Shin Han volunteered to be the first to fight. He quickly manages to defeat the vicious creature (in just two moves), prompting Vegeta to destroy it for its blatant incompetence. 💥
After the death of all the Saibamens, Nappa decides to enter the battle himself and chooses Ten Shin Han as his first opponent. Ten Shin Han is no match for the giant warrior and loses his left arm in a single blow. He immediately tries to use levitation to escape, but is quickly thrown to the ground by the second blow. Seeing this, Chaozu sacrifices himself by launching a self-destruct attack against Nappa, but to no avail, as Nappa emerges completely unscathed and begins fighting Piccolo and Goku’s son Gohan, even if together they’re still no match. 😨
Enraged by Chaozu’s death, Ten Shin Han puts all his remaining strength into one last Kikoho with his right hand, killing himself from exhaustion in the process. The attack manages to severely damage Nappa’s armor, but does not cause any significant damage to the Saiyan warrior. In the anime, Nappa even goes so far as to praise Ten Shin Han’s efforts, claiming that had he been targeted differently, he would have been seriously injured. The attempt also shocks Vegeta, as it was he who warned Nappa of Ten Shin Han’s power and declared that if the latter hadn’t warned him, it could have killed him. 😢
FREEZER SAGA
Thanks to God’s influence, Ten Shin Han was allowed to train on Master Kaio’s small planet in the other world, just as Goku had done before. He was joined by the other fighters who had also fallen in the battle against the Saiyans, Chaozu, Piccolo and Yamcha. On the planet, Master Kaio contacts Goku and tells him that his friends have all traversed the Serpent’s Path much faster than he has. They all required even harder training than Goku had received. Before beginning his training with King Kaio, Ten Shin Han tries to make him laugh during the preliminary joke test. 😅
Ten Shin Han, along with Chaozu and Yamcha, stays on King Kaio’s planet and learns that everyone (Goku, Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, Dende and Piccolo fused with Nail) is fighting the evil tyrant Freezer on Namek. Ten Shin Han is finally brought back to life with Chaozu thanks to Porunga’s wish. They voluntarily agreed to be brought back to life four months after Yamcha, so as not to be separated. Once back on Earth, Ten Shin Han and Chaozu find themselves in solitude, training in the mountains. 🌄
OTHER SAGAS
During the Cyborg, Cell and Buu sagas, Ten Shin Han plays more of a secondary role. Although he makes an appearance when Goku takes on Majin Buu, he’s quickly put out of action. This is logically explained by the fact that this great fighter is outmatched by the power of his opponents. Ten Shin Han also performs a heroic act against Cell, allowing C18 to escape. 🏋
TEN SHIN HAN IN DRAGON BALL SUPER
Ten Shin Han takes on Freezer’s warriors in the film and manga “The Resurrection of F”.
Later, he observes the tournament between universes 6 and 7. 🏁
He then opens his own martial arts school, the Ten-Shin Dojo. He is a very strict teacher with his disciples.
Ten Shin Han appears at greater length in the Survival of the Universe saga. In this incredible battle royale tournament, he uses the cloning technique to counter the sniper. Then, he manages to get him out of the arena with him. Although he is eliminated fairly quickly, his heroic act is hailed by Beerus. 👏
TEN SHIN HAN’S POWER
Ten Shin Han is one of the most powerful humans on Earth. His power level is 180 at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, surpassing even that of Genius Turtle. In this tournament, he defeats Yamcha after an intense battle (although Master Shen claims he hasn’t reached full strength). In the semi-finals, he battles to a draw with Master Roshi in an intense encounter, although he once again holds back. In the final, his power is equivalent to Goku’s, and after a long fight, Ten Shin Han wins the tournament. However, he later admits that he won by pure luck and recognizes that Goku was stronger. 🥇
At the 23rd tournament, he loses to Goku. Later, he fights Nappa and Vegeta in a bid to save Earth, but loses his life in the process. 😥
TEN SHIN HAN’S 5 BEST COMBAT TECHNIQUES
Ten Shin Han is a great warrior with original fighting techniques all his own. Let’s discover his five most famous fighting techniques together 😀
Machine gun punch: Ten swings his arms so fast they resemble windmills over his shoulder, striking his opponent repeatedly.
Dodon Ray: The finger-beam technique characteristic of the crane school, invented by Master Shen.
Four Witches Technique: The user temporarily grows two extra arms behind his back, apparently under the shoulder blades. This enables him to attack with double the intensity of his normal ability.
Multi-Form: Ten splits into four identical copies, each with the same power.
Solar eruption: The user places his hands near the center of his face with fingers spread towards his eyes. As he shouts the name of the technique, a brilliant white light erupts, blinding all who look at it except the user. 🔥PRODUCTS OF THE MOMENT🔥
