Tanjiro Kamado temple demon in the Sakonji Urokodaki workshop
The Temple Demon (お堂どう鬼おに Odō Oni?) constitutes Tanjiro Kamado’s first encounter with a demon that has taken the life of a human being.
Appearance
The Temple Demon was a muscular demon of medium height. His skin was a pale ash-gray hue, with two green markings on his upper arms and legs. He sported long, shaggy, dark-green hair parted in the middle of his forehead. His features also included prominent fangs and sharp nails, typical of demons.
The Temple Demon wore a sleeveless blue tunic adorned with a dark turquoise and white pattern outlining his uncovered chest. Pale-colored bracelets encircled his wrists and ankles.
After being struck on the head by Nezuko Kamado, the Demon developed two muscular arms on the sides of his head.
Personality
Like most demons, the Temple Demon was cruel and ruthless to humans. He attacked Tanjiro Kamado without the slightest hesitation as soon as he discovered he was human. He was extremely territorial and furious at Tanjiro and Nezuko’s intrusion into his domain. During their fight, the Demon displayed a certain superiority towards Tanjiro, boasting of his ability to recover quickly after being struck on the chin.
History
The Demon had already attacked travelers who had taken refuge in a small temple hut on the way to Sagiri Mountain. When Tanjiro asked for directions, one of the villagers mentioned that it would be dangerous for him to travel at night, as several people had disappeared in the area.
Synopsis
Tanjiro and Nezuko pass by the temple in which the Temple Demon is feeding and, attracted by the smell of blood, Tanjiro hurriedly opens the door. He is shocked to discover the Demon devouring two dead men. Annoyed, the Demon turns to the Kamado brothers and warns them not to encroach on his territory. In a final flash of light, the Demon rushes at Tanjiro.
Tanjiro reacts quickly, pulling out his hatchet and slitting the Demon’s throat. The man-eating Demon staggers back, but his wound heals in mere seconds. Meanwhile, Nezuko is distracted by the bloody bodies of the victims.
The Demon overwhelms Tanjiro and pins him to the ground before he can even react. Gifted with superior strength and speed, the Demon attempts to break the boy’s neck. However, Nezuko regains his senses and rushes to his brother’s side, kicking the Demon’s head, which surprises Tanjiro.
.
The Demon’s body then tries to grab Tanjiro, but Nezuko violently pushes it back towards a tree. The Demon’s head and body can move independently of each other. The body attacks first to isolate Nezuko, and although Tanjiro tries to help, the Demon’s head develops extra arms and grabs Tanjiro’s hatchet. The body kicks Nezuko several times before throwing her deep into the forest.
Tanjiro delivers reckless headbutts to the Demon, which prove effective. He manages to deliver two powerful blows to the Demon’s rock-solid head, throwing him into a tree and nailing him there with the hatchet. Tanjiro follows his sister to a cliff, where she is pushed close to the edge.
Tanjiro attacks the Demon’s body from the top of the cliff, but Nezuko catches him before he falls too far. The Demon’s body falls while the head is stunned by the fall.
Tanjiro prepares to finish off the Demon’s head with a knife, but hesitates to take another life, convinced that it wasn’t the Demon who attacked his family. That’s when a masked man wearing the face of a Tengu appears and tells Tanjiro that he can’t kill a Demon simply by using a knife.
The masked man challenges Tanjiro to find another solution. The boy initially thinks that crushing the Demon’s head with a stone will suffice, but he can’t bring himself to kill the creature the brutal way. The Demon awakens and curses Tanjiro until the sun rises and reduces him to ashes.
.
After the Demon’s death, Sakonji gives the victims a proper burial.
