Tanjuro Kamado to Tanjiro Kamado in The Sound of Bells on a Night of Snow and Moon.
Tanjuro Kamado (竈門かまど 炭たん十じゅう郎ろう Kamado Tanjūrō?) was the husband of Kie Kamado and father of Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, Takeo Kamado, Hanako Kamado, Shigeru Kamado and Rokuta Kamado.
Appearance
Tanjuro suffered from a disease that made his skin dull, pale and extremely fragile. His appearance was similar to that of his son Tanjiro, with the same dark red eyes, black hair with red tips and a scar on his forehead.
Tanjuro wore an outfit similar to his son’s, but with a haori patterned in orange and black instead of dark turquoise and black. The earrings he wore during his lifetime were passed on to him by his ancestor, then later by Tanjiro.
When he performed the Kagura ritual dance, Tanjiro took on the appearance of an Iwami Kagura dancer with a long-sleeved dark-brown robe adorned with gold and crimson-red frames, as well as a large headband covering his entire face with the flame kanji (炎?) inscribed on it. He also wielded a wooden blade that resembled the kanji (出で de?) meaning sunrise.
Personality
Tanjuro was a calm, thoughtful, forgiving, charismatic and loving person. He maintained peaceful relations with his family and regularly gave Tanjiro life advice.
Although he may appear calm on the outside, he exuded a dignified and noble aura, with a peaceful perception of his surroundings. According to his son, he didn’t like to attract attention or reveal his full abilities to others. However, if he saw his family in danger, he didn’t hesitate to protect them and showed no mercy to his enemies.
History
At some point in his life, Tanjuro married Kie and had six children.
Tanjuro seemed to have links with the world of demon slayers, but in his later years he was a wise but sickly and frail man.
He died shortly before the massacre of his wife and youngest children, but still managed to inspire his two surviving children.
Synopsis
Natagumo Mountain Arch
Tanjiro has to face Rui, a low-ranking demon, and is almost killed by his demonic blood technique. At that moment, a flashback of his father telling him to breathe and become Hinokami resurfaces in his memory. Tanjiro remembers himself and Nezuko as children, watching their father perform the Hinokami Kagura all night long. Tanjiro then asks his mother how Tanjuro managed to dance the Kagura Hinokami on a freezing night, and she explains that there is a breathing method that enables him to dance whatever the weather conditions. Tanjuro asks Tanjiro to make sure that the hanafuda earrings and kagura are transmitted without interruption, whatever happens. Next, Tanjiro uses the Tenth Form, Water Breathing: Constant Flow, to perform the Hinokami Kagura, the Dance.

Capacities
General abilities: Tanjuro has proven to be phenomenally strong despite not being a demon-slayer and suffering from a tragic illness that makes his body incredibly fragile. He was able to kill a bear measuring over two meters in height without even using a Nichirin blade, at a speed greater than the blink of an eye.
Demon-slayer mark: As a descendant of the Kamado family and able to access the “Transparent World”, Tanjuro’s birthmark on his forehead is secretly a demon-slayer mark. This is confirmed by Shinjuro’s explanation that all Breath of the Sun users naturally have a mark on their foreheads.
- Transparent world: Tanjuro had the ability to predict his opponents’ attacks by observing their blood flow, muscles and joint movements.
immense stamina and endurance: Tanjuro possessed immense stamina and endurance for a non-demon slayer. Despite his illness, frail body and surrounding cold, he could perform the Hinokami Kagura ritual dance from dusk to dawn without any rest.
Detached state: Throughout his life, Tanjuro never manifested impulses, hatred, anger, aggression, hostility or fear, even in the most critical situations, be it when at death’s door or when confronting a huge bear. This was largely inspired by Yoriichi Tsugikuni’s ability to master his fighting spirit and bloodlust.
Sword mastery
Hinokami Kagura (ヒノカミ神楽かぐら Hinokami Kagura?): Tanjuro was able to use Sun Breathing as the Hinokami Kagura taught by his own father, passing on Yoriichi’s dance and earrings to his son.
Anecdotes
- Tanjuro’s first name contains the kanji for “coal” (炭), “ten” (十) and “son” (郎), with the kanji for “ten” and “son” (十郎) combined forming the masculine suffix “Jūrō”.
Quotes
- (To Tanjiro Kamado) “Thank you, Tanjiro. But in recent years, I haven’t felt any difficulties in the Kagura. It’s a strange thing. When I learned the Kagura from your grandfather, I was younger, healthier and stronger than I am today… but back then, I would get out of breath and find it difficult. I guess it was because I was doing a lot of unnecessary movement. What’s important is proper breathing and control, making the most efficient movements to produce the greatest force. When you do this… your mind gradually clears.” (To Tanjiro Kamado) “In the beginning, you have to learn the movements and the sensibility. You have to assimilate them. You open up your five senses, becoming aware of every blood vessel in your body. This is a very trying time, and you may feel that you can’t go any further, no matter how hard you fight. After learning and integrating many things, you eliminate what is superfluous. You keep only what’s necessary in your movements, and you concentrate.”
- (To a large bear) “I’m sorry you’re hungry, but I won’t let you get any closer. I will show no mercy to anyone who wishes to harm my family… no matter what the odds. Heed this warning… or I’ll steal your life.”
