Soifon, sometimes romanized as Soi Fon, holds the position of commander-in-chief of the Onmitsukidō and is the captain of the 2nd division of Gotei 13.

His lieutenant in this unit is Marechiyo Ōmaeda. After being promoted to the Royal Guard, she took on a student named Kyoto Yamaharu and trained him to reach the same level as, or even surpass, Soifon.

Soi Fon (sui-feng)

Suì-Fēng is a petite woman with a relatively short appearance, gray eyes and black hair. Her hair is short and she ties it into two long braids with white cloth ties, each adorned with a large gold ring. 110 years ago, Suì-Fēng’s hair was longer, reaching her shoulders, and had a softer appearance.

She wears the traditional uniform of a Shinigami captain, including a sleeveless haori and a yellow obi tied around her waist. Underneath her standard Shinigami captain’s uniform, Suì-Fēng dons the Onmitsukidō commander-in-chief’s uniform, which has no sleeves and doesn’t cover her back, but she wears long black armbands. Instead of wearing the usual Shinigami sandals with tabi, she prefers traditional Chinese shoes with ordinary white socks.

Suì-Fēng is loyal, determined and unyielding in her convictions. She is a hard worker and firmly defends a moral stance, placing particular emphasis on obeying orders. She is generally reserved and lacks the arrogance of her lieutenant, although she doesn’t hesitate to mock her opponents or smile during combat, a trait she shares with her predecessor. She won’t hesitate to eliminate her subordinates if they get in her way. She prefers to ignore her subordinates, including her lieutenant Ōmaeda, as she believes that personal trials build character. Suì-Fēng, like most Shinigami women, is a member of the Shinigami Women’s Association.

Suì-Fēng likes fish but dislikes meat. She also seems to be quite obsessed with Yoruichi and often spends her free time dreaming of their days when they fought together and practiced Shunpō. In a special Valentine’s Day episode, she even tried to give Yoruichi a heart-shaped box of chocolates, but to no avail. She loves anything reminiscent of a black cat, which is Yoruichi’s alternate form, and has a large collection of black cat-shaped merchandise. In one of the Shinigami Golden Cup chapters, Suì-Fēng receives a black cat-shaped plush toy from Matsumoto, who has just returned from a mission in the real world. Since Yoruichi’s return, we also know that she collects cat accessories and had underfloor heating installed in the 2nd Division’s quarters (the costs were covered by her lieutenant). Suì-Fēng sometimes seems to be fond of Yoruichi’s photos. Later, as part of a Shinigami Women’s Association photo-collection project, she attempts to take nude photos of Yoruichi when distracted, but fails miserably. When the Shinigami Women’s Association was asked to design a new cell phone for Shinigami women, she proposed a design depicting a black cat’s head with a bee’s body (the cat representing Yoruichi and the bee representing herself), with a private line that would allow her to talk to Yoruichi as much as she wished. Her request was rejected. When Yamamoto orders the captains of Gotei 13 to design a Shinigami video game, Suì-Fēng proposes a game featuring Yoruichi and herself. Her lieutenant, Ōmaeda, makes it clear that she would be the only person to play it.

Suì-Fēng is a person of incredible determination, willing to go to any lengths to complete a mission and defeat her enemies. A striking example of this comes during her fight against the Segunda Espada, where, after being hit by an attack, she orders her lieutenant without hesitation to amputate her arm. On the battlefield, Suì-Fēng is rarely overwhelmed by despair or emotion, except when it comes to her former master. Despite her cold demeanor and constant treatment of her lieutenant, she places a certain amount of trust in him, asking him to act as a diversion while she puts her plans into action. Such is her stubbornness that she still seems to harbor a certain dislike for Kisuke Urahara, perhaps because Yoruichi used to tease her about him, because she disapproved of his lazy, undisciplined behavior, or perhaps because she still blames him for abandoning his mentor over a century ago. This manifests itself when she asks Hachigen Ushōda to trap the store owner in a barrier for a month in exchange for being able to use his Bankai a second time in the same day.

Powers and abilities

Master Hakuda

As head of the Onmitsukidō, Suì-Fēng must demonstrate exceptional skill in close combat, an area in which she has trained since joining this organization. She is very likely to be the most skilled hand-to-hand combatant in the entire Soul Society, able to rival or even surpass her mentor, Yoruichi Shihōin. She is able to block and attack with great mastery, making it difficult for anyone to touch her without her consent.

Great spiritual power

As captain of the 2nd division, Suì-Fēng exudes an immense amount of spiritual energy.

Master Assassin

As commander-in-chief of the Onmitsukidō, Suì-Fēng is one of the greatest masters in the art of assassination. Her ability to remain concealed is widely recognized. Thanks to her mastery of Shunpo, she can neutralize her opponents undetected, as when she caught the arrows of one of her enemies in the middle of a fight. She also used this skill to sneak up on Aizen and temporarily capture him before he escaped to Hueco Mundo. Since childhood, she has studied all disciplines related to the power of punishment, including the use of poisons. Over the years, she has developed a resistance to almost every poison in existence.

Enhanced strength

Despite her small size, Suì-Fēng is powerful enough to take on much larger opponents. She easily overcomes foes four times her size. She has demonstrated her ability to lift huge slabs of concrete debris under which she was buried with consummate ease, requiring little or no effort.

Increased durability

Suì-Fēng possesses exceptional strength, able to withstand powerful blows that shatter buildings, breaking through walls and collapsing entire sections on top of her, without suffering any apparent injury. She even survived having her left arm sliced off, remaining fully active to continue the fight.

Master Shunpo

As head of the Onmitsukidō, Suì-Fēng must possess remarkable Shunpo skills. We could see that she closely follows her mentor Yoruichi Shihōin, being able to hit her once with the Nigeki Kessatsu, but unable to repeat the feat, as Yoruichi was even faster. She actively uses her mastery of Shunpo techniques and is extremely adept at evasion at both short and long range. As a result, it’s virtually impossible to reach her unless you’re the most advanced fighter. Her movements are so fast that very few people would be able to perceive an attack in progress. Suzemebachi has even remarked that his Shunpo is the fastest in the entire Soul Society, with the exception of Yoruichi.

Soi Fon (sui-feng)

Suì-Fēng is able to simultaneously create at least 15 clones of herself using Shunpo, functioning similarly to Zommari Rureaux’s Gemelos Sonído. Although these clones are indistinguishable from her real body and mimic her movements, they don’t seem to last long.

Utsusemi (空蝉; Cicada): This is the third secret technique of the Onmitsukidō. It allows movement of considerable speed and suddenness, leaving behind at least one tangible image.

Master specialist in the art of the sword

Suì-Fēng is a master of swordsmanship and usually only draws her Zanpakutō when facing an armed opponent. What sets her apart is her unique fighting style, different from traditional styles. She holds her blade horizontally, along her arm, in an inverted grip, using the blade as a large dagger pointed backwards, towards the bottom of her hand. All her blows are delivered by sweeping the arm forward, like a punch, while rapidly drawing the blade away from the arm to form a wide arc. She is also extremely adept at blocking attacks in this way. She also excels in traditional fighting style, mastering two variants of sword fighting with brio.

Master strategist and tactician

As commander of the Secret Mobile Corps and captain of the 2nd Division, Suì-Fēng has demonstrated her leadership skills time and again. Throughout the series, she has shown herself to be perceptive and astute, able to quickly grasp any situation that arises and adapt to it effectively. Suì-Fēng has an innate ability to make informed decisions in battle. Her tactics are based on subterfuge and confusion. She knows how to give her opponents a false sense of security and make them underestimate her abilities. One of her common strategies is to assess her opponent’s strengths and weaknesses in the midst of battle.

Kidō Expert

As Captain of the 2nd Division and Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō, Suì-Fēng possesses in-depth knowledge of the art of Kidō, although she favors the use of shunpo and close-combat techniques. Her mastery enables her to combine them skillfully with other hand-to-hand combat techniques.

Shunkō (瞬閧, Flash Cry ; Viz “Instant War Cry”)

Suì-Fēng uses an advanced technique that combines hand-to-hand combat and Kidō. She wraps her back and arms in Kidō pressure, forming a powerful shield. The uniform she wears, called keisen, is designed without backs or sleeves, as they tear when the technique is activated. This technique enables her to instantly neutralize the movements of her opponents. The version of this technique used by Suì-Fēng is new to her and not yet complete, making the use of the compressed Kidō invisible. She has sufficient control to release the Kidō’s energy in the form of a directed blast, capable of causing significant damage to the surrounding area. As time goes on, she masters this technique more and more, using it to block and dispel a devastating light explosion, as well as to parry and repel a bare-handed blade attack, creating a protective barrier with the energy of the technique, despite the power of the attacker. She has also demonstrated her ability to focus the Kidō’s energy under pressure on specific areas of her body, making the protection extremely targeted and effective.

Suzumebachi, also known as Hornet, is the Zanpakutō of Suì-Fēng. In its sealed form, it takes on the appearance of a wakizashi with a yellow handle reminiscent of a Chinese dao. It is usually held horizontally behind Suì-Fēng’s lower back, secured with a rope.

When she utters the command “Sting all enemies to death” (尽敵螫殺, Jinteki Shakusetsu), Suì-Fēng unleashes the power of her Zanpakutō, Suzumebachi. Grabbing Suzumebachi with his right hand, the entire sword glows with a white light and shrinks. Once the glow has dissipated, Suzumebachi reveals its transformed form: a black and gold gauntlet connected to a stinger-like blade that sits on Suì-Fēng’s middle finger by means of a small chain. This “sting” is about twice as long as the normal length of Suì-Fēng’s fingers, giving it a slightly increased reach. The Shikai’s colors and patterns are reminiscent of a hornet, in keeping with the name of its Zanpakutō. In this form, Suzumebachi is able to parry his opponents’ sword attacks, as Suì-Fēng can block incoming assaults with the “stinger” and gauntlet.

Shikai’s special ability

Suì-Fēng’s Nigeki Kessatsu technique (弐撃決殺, Death in two stages) works as follows: first, she stabs her enemy with Suzumebachi’s blade. This attack, in addition to causing a deep wound, also leaves a butterfly-shaped mark on the victim’s body. This mark, called Hōmonka (蜂紋華, Hornet’s Crest; “Bee’s Crest Flower” in English), extends from the center of the wound. She then becomes the target of Suì-Fēng’s second attack. If she succeeds in striking in the same place as the first time, the person is inevitably doomed to die, thus illustrating “Death in two stages”. When the ability goes into action, a larger ridge rapidly unfolds from the two smaller ones, completely destroying the victim’s body. These ridges are maintained by Suì-Fēng’s will and can only be removed if she wishes. Back when Yoruichi was still head of the Onmitsukidō, Suì-Fēng could only maintain the ridges for half an hour. The mechanics of this ability lie not in the point of entry of the wound, but in the point of actual contact with the surface. This ability is made possible by a venom secreted by Suzumebachi. Once it enters the target’s body, the venom spreads rapidly, destroying the entire body in minutes, if not seconds, without leaving a trace. The poison’s effect takes a little longer to work on those with higher spiritual powers.

Suì-Fēng has the ability to use the venom secreted by Suzumebachi for Nigeki Kessatsu as an antidote by stabbing herself.

Bankai: Jakuhō Raikōben (雀蜂雷公鞭, Hornet Thunder Whip)

Suì-Fēng takes on the appearance of a missile-launching base covered in golden armor that envelops his right arm and extends to above his shoulder, forming a facial shield that covers the right side of his face. Her Bankai takes the form of a large, pointed gold cylinder, adorned with black markings twice the size of Suì-Fēng herself. Before activating her Bankai, Suì-Fēng tied a heavy metal belt (Ginjōhan) around the building she was standing on, preparing herself for the massive recoil of the attack and the powerful explosion that followed. She uses her Bankai so rarely that most Soul Society members have never seen it, including her own lieutenant. Suì-Fēng explains that she prefers to avoid using her Bankai, as it goes against her pride as a covert ops agent. In her opinion, it’s too imposing to remain hidden, too heavy to be moved and its attack is too showy to be used in assassination missions.

Special Bankai ability

Jakuhō Raikōben, as an artillery-type ranged weapon, has the ability to launch the missile attached to its base. To do this, Suì-Fēng must first lift the huge missile and adjust it, using the slits in his faceguard to maintain visibility. Once the target is locked, small fins deploy along the missile before it is launched, allowing it to follow its trajectory for a precise strike. On impact, the missile causes a massive, powerful explosion. The resulting shockwave is so intense that it propels Suì-Fēng and his lieutenant backwards, and is powerful enough to tear the steel belt to which they were attached, even though they are a considerable distance from the blast. Suì-Fēng can fire several missiles of equal power. However, this attack has a normal limit, allowing it to launch no more than one missile every three days, which puts it under considerable pressure.

The relationship between Suì-Fēng and Yoruichi is one of the most dynamic among the Shinigami. From the moment she laid eyes on Yoruichi in her youth, Suì-Fēng compared her to the gaze of a goddess. She admired Yoruichi’s strength, beauty and nobility to the point where her admiration became true adoration. Suì-Fēng rose through the ranks, and Yoruichi personally asked her to become one of his bodyguards. Being at Yoruichi’s side made Suì-Fēng happy. However, one day, Yoruichi left without warning. This devastated Suì-Fēng, who felt betrayed. Since then, Suì-Fēng has trained intensely to become stronger, in the hope of being able to face Yoruichi herself. When Yoruichi finally returned to Soul Society, Suì-Fēng fought her to prove her superiority. However, Yoruichi proved to be more powerful. Seeing this, Suì-Fēng burst into tears, wondering why Yoruichi hadn’t considered her in the same way. After their fight, they reconcile and restore their relationship. In some additional stories, the relationship between Suì-Fēng and Yoruichi is portrayed as childish and slightly obsessive.
