Information about Shinobu Kocho:

Shinobu Kocho is currently the Hashira Bug. She’s usually calm and always wears a smile on her face, no matter what situation she’s in. She likes to tease others, especially Giyū Tomioka, by pretending that nobody likes her. Behind her cheerful exterior, she hides a deep anger towards all the demons who have taken the lives of many loved ones, including her older sister. However, she made an exception for Nezuko after getting to know her better.

In contrast to other Hashira, Shinobu doesn’t fight using breathing techniques. She prefers to use a small, thin sword with a single edge at the tip to kill demons by injecting them with a glycine-based poison she developed herself. Shinobu sacrifices herself to defeat the High Moon Domain by ingesting large doses of glycine, allowing her body to be absorbed by the demon and poison it. His revenge will then be fulfilled by Kanao and Inosuke.

Before dying, Shinobu also helps Tamayo create a cure for Nezuko’s demonic illness as well as a mixture of poisons used to greatly weaken Muzan.

History of Shinobu Kocho

Shinobu is the youngest of the Kocho family, living alongside her mother, father and older sister, Kanae. She grew up in a loving, caring home until her parents were cruelly murdered by demons, before the horrified eyes of Shinobu and her sister.

Just as the demon was about to attack them, they were rescued by Himejima Gyoumei, one of the pillars, who killed the demon. Deeply scarred by the pain and suffering they endured, both Shinobu and Kanae vowed to become demon slayers, in order to protect each other and prevent others from suffering the same losses they had.

Later in life, when accompanying their sister Kanae on a trip, they met a young girl who was being enslaved on a bridge. Intrigued by her, Kanae took an interest in her plight and decided to bring the girl, named Tsuyuri, back to the Butterfly Estate, despite Shinobu’s initial reservations. Eventually, they managed to buy Tsuyuri from her master and trained her within the Butterfly Estate to become the next tsuguko.

Shinobu Kocho’s personality

Shinobu has a rather laid-back attitude and always wears a smile on her face, whatever the circumstances. She seems to take pleasure in teasing others and can sometimes be rather sadistic in this regard, particularly when she goes after Giyu Tomioka. Despite her relaxed appearance and initial desire to find common ground with the demons, she can be quite cruel to them. This is shown when she kills the Spider Demon’s elder sister after giving her false hopes of help, as well as when she attempts to kill Nezuko Kamado without hesitation. However, she shows more compassion towards Tanjiro Kamado and his sister after hearing their story.

It is later revealed that his apparent tranquility hides a deep hatred for demons. This hatred is due to the loss of her sister, Kanae Kocho, at a young age, as well as the deaths of her parents, most of her Tsuguko and the families of her apprentices at the Butterfly House. This intense hatred keeps her in a quasi-permanent state of anger, which Tanjiro Kamado senses in their conversations. Her desire for revenge prevents her from leading a normal life as her sister wished, and she instead devotes all her energy to defeating demons.

During her battle with Doma, Shinobu reveals that she also suffers from an inferiority complex due to her inferior physical abilities compared to the other Hashira. She envies their superior size and musculature, cursing her own body for not having developed further to enable her to be more effective in battle.

In her youth, Shinobu had a more direct and frank demeanor, as seen when she and her sister saved Kanao Tsuyuri. She had a negative attitude towards education. However, after Kanae’s death, Shinobu adopted her sister’s appearance and behavior while retaining her inner rage.

Shinobu Kocho’s abilities and powers

As Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is a swordswoman of great power. Although she lacks the physical strength to slice off a demon’s head like an ordinary demon slayer, or even the superhuman abilities of her companions, Shinobu nonetheless remains as dangerous and deadly as they.

Shinobu Kocho’s natural abilities

Master Swordswoman: As Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is one of the most powerful and skilled swordswomen in the entire organization.

Medical expertise: although not as skilled in combat as her comrades, Shinobu makes up for her lack of natural aptitude by demonstrating immense skill and mastery in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. She is extremely knowledgeable about the creation of various poisons and venoms from wisteria flowers. She is capable of eliminating her opponents in a matter of seconds and has even managed to create a powerful poison capable of considerably weakening Doma, the second most powerful demon of the Twelve Kizuki. She has the skills to slowly saturate her own body with poison without damaging her own health, as well as the medical skills required to neutralize the venoms and poisons created by demons. This is illustrated when she manages to counter the poison that slowly transforms Zenitsu into a spider and returns him to his original human form.

Anti-Kibutsuji drug: In collaboration with Tamayo and Yushiro, Shinobu helped create a four-stage drug that proved effective in considerably weakening Muzan Kibutsuji, despite his physical strength and immense abilities. The first stage, although it failed against Muzan, is capable of transforming a demon into a human.

Aging stage: The aging stage is the second stage of the drug, an idea proposed by Shinobu herself. This stage rapidly ages its user by fifty years in one minute, successfully aging Muzan by 9,000 years in just three hours. The side effects of this aging process slowed Muzan down enough to allow the Demon Slayers to fight him continuously.

Human conversion step: in collaboration with Tamayo, Shinobu helped create the demon-to-human conversion drug, a feat considered impossible. Both Muzan and Nezuko were given the drug, but Muzan managed to break it down and render it ineffective. However, Nezuko was able to regain her human form and memories after taking the drug.

Impressive speed: Shinobu demonstrated almost supernatural levels of speed, being quick enough to easily evade and surprise demons. Doma, the second-highest ranking, even declared that she could be the fastest Hashira he’d ever met.

Improved strength: Despite his smaller stature among the Demon Slayer Corps members, giving him a less powerful strike due to his smaller arms, Shinobu demonstrates great pushing and striking strength. Other Hashira note that a single stroke of his sword could easily split a boulder in two. What’s more, his thrusting speed is the fastest of any Hashira.

The art of the sword

A unique weapon: Shinobu’s main weapon is a heavily modified katana created by Tecchin Tecchikawahara. Right down to the hilt, it looks like any other katana, but above that, the blade is replaced by a chopstick. It ends in a needle-like point, similar to an insect stinger in both appearance and function. This “stinger” is designed to inject glycine-based poisons into demons, using Shinobu’s medical expertise to compensate for her relative physical weakness and inability to decapitate her enemies. She also modified the weapon’s scabbard to use it as a portable poison mixer and dispenser. She is one of five Hashira who use a single weapon, the others being Tengen Uzui, Mitsuri Kanroji, Obanai Iguro and Gyomei Himejima.

Insect respiration: Insect respiration is derived from flower respiration, itself based on water respiration. Although Shinobu can’t decapitate demons like other Hashira, it’s just as deadly as they are. Thanks to this unique breathing technique, she coats her weapon with a poison made from the wisteria flower and modifies the mixture and composition of the poisons inside her scabbard.

Butterfly Dance: Caprice – Shinobu rushes towards his opponent and stabs him repeatedly with his blade to inject his poison.

Bee Sting Dance: True wingbeating – Shinobu charges his target at incredible speed, using his momentum to reinforce his unique thrust and inject his opponent with deadly poison.

Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hex – A six-move attack in which Shinobu aims to strike his target and inject multiple doses of poison into the target demon’s weak points (such as the neck, heart, torso, etc.) in order to kill it with a strong dose of poison.

Centipede dance: Hundred-Legged Zigzag – An attack in which Shinobu uses all his speed to perform a zigzag pattern, confusing his opponent and creating an opening to stab directly at his enemy’s neck and inject poison, the strength and power of the stab being increased by the momentum of his speed. Doma noted that the sheer speed of this technique is powerful enough to destroy an entire wooden bridge.

Body modification

Poisoned Body: In a bid to defeat Doma, the top Rank 2, Shinobu undertook a major body modification over the course of a year. She absorbed and altered his physiology using a highly concentrated glycine-based poison. She succeeded in saturating her body with this undetectable poison, which became completely integrated into the cellular structures of her body, including her blood and internal organs, right down to the tips of her fingernails. With Shinobu’s stature and weight, his body is equivalent to 37 kg of poison, some seven hundred times the lethal amount needed to kill an average demon. This poison is powerful enough to dissolve Doma right down to its bones.
