History of Sanemi Shinazugawa
Sanemi grew up as the eldest of seven siblings, living with both parents. In his family, his father constantly abused all the children, as well as Sanemi’s mother, until he was finally randomly stabbed and killed.
One day, Sanemi’s mother didn’t come home, leaving the children worried about her fate. Just as Sanemi was about to set off in search of her, a loud banging on the door sounded. The children opened the door to be immediately confronted by their demon-transformed mother, who slaughtered them. To protect her siblings, Sanemi managed to get her mother out of the house and entrusted the responsibility of caring for her siblings to her younger brother Genya.
.After settling the injured children inside the house, Genya frantically set out to find a doctor to care for them. As she set off, Genya discovered Sanemi in the middle of the road, with their dead mother lying at her feet. Genya shouted at Sanemi that he was a “murderer” and angrily accused him of murdering their mother.
Later, it is revealed that when he killed his mother that night, Sanemi lost the ability to see and perceive colors. Everything became black and white for him, making it difficult to see at night. This phenomenon is probably due to the psychological trauma caused by his mother’s murder and his brother’s rejection. Now desperate and suffering because of these events, Sanemi began hunting demons alone, with suicidal devotion, unaware of the Nichirin Blades’ existence. Instead, he armed himself with an arsenal of weapons and began fighting demons on his own. His method was to first neutralize and capture the demon, then wait for sunrise to bind it and let it be destroyed by the sun’s rays. Despite this brutal and reckless fighting style, he managed to survive and kill several demons. Later, recalling his past exploits, Sanemi admitted that his survival was due solely to luck and the unique scent of his blood, which intoxicated demons, making them less focused in battle. He met a real demon killer named Masachika Kumeno, who helped him and introduced him to a true mentor. After completing his training, he teamed up with him to defeat one of the Twelve Demon Moons, specifically the Lower Moon. Unfortunately, Kumeno lost his life in battle, leaving Sanemi as the sole survivor. Sanemi was subsequently promoted to the higher ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps, receiving the title and rank of Wind Pillar.
Sanemi Shinazugawa’s personality
Sanemi is abrasive, hot-blooded and stubborn, often impulsive and quick to get carried away. The only person he shows respect for is Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and that comes from realizing that there’s a lot more to this man than meets the eye.
Sanemi’s cold, rude and contemptuous behavior is the result of losing many people who were dear to him in the past. Later, when he sees these deceased people, like his mother, he can’t help but smile in the hope of seeing them again. When Genya joins the Demon Slayers in search of Sanemi, the latter hurls insults at him, but Tanjiro Kamado is able to see that Sanemi doesn’t really hate him; in fact, he still feels that brotherly love he had for him in their childhood. However, he never expressed this brotherly love, as he tried to keep Genya away from him and the Demon Slayers in order to protect him from danger.
Because of all the people he has lost at the hands of demons, he harbors a deep hatred for these creatures and is convinced that humans and demons can never coexist. When Sanemi comes to a decision, it’s extremely difficult to dissuade him: he doesn’t believe Tanjiro’s arguments that Nezuko Kamado doesn’t feed on humans, and he sets out to prove his point by stabbing the box Nezuko is in. After beating her to a pulp, he cuts off his arm to try and provoke her into attacking him, due to the effect of her rare blood. Even though she doesn’t, and Kagaya uses it as proof that Nezuko doesn’t attack humans, Sanemi doesn’t really accept the Kamado siblings.
Finally, Tanjiro was right about Sanemi. Despite his mistreatment of his brother Genya, Sanemi genuinely loved and cared for his brother. He even expressed the wish that Genya could settle down and start a family.
After the battle with the first higher rank, Sanemi can be seen to be not only very angry and empty towards Muzan, but also more cooperative with people like Giyu, with whom he clearly had tensions. Even when Sanemi is expelled from the fight against Muzan, he shows undeniable courage and determination, much like his fellow stalwarts.
When the showdown with Muzan comes to an end and time passes, Sanemi seems to have calmed down. He is able to smile at Giyu, even after their past confrontations. Even more surprisingly, he acknowledges his mistakes and apologizes to Nezuko for his actions. He can’t help but smile and pat her on the head, as he even sees Genya in her reaction.
Sanemi Shinazugawa’s abilities and powers
As Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps, Sanemi is a swordsman of exceptional power. According to Kokushibo, his physical abilities and techniques have reached their peak.
Sanemi Shinazugawa’s natural abilities
Master Swordsman: As Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Sanemi is considered one of the most powerful and skilled swordsmen in the entire organization. His sword skills and techniques are extremely powerful and refined, impressing even Kokushibo, a top-rank 1 Demon with hundreds of years of experience and skill.
Blood poisoning (Marechi): Sanemi blood has proven to be one of the rarest types of blood, making it incredibly toxic and palatable to demons. It is also unique in its intense potency: even a single drop of its blood is enough to make demons immediately salivate and disrupt their concentration, as we saw with the powerful Kokushibo. Despite the power of her blood, Nezuko has managed to resist it thanks to her own conviction and determination not to feed on humans, reinforced by the hypnosis implanted in her brain by Sakonji Urokodaki.
.Muscle control: Sanemi has demonstrated the ability to manipulate his own muscles to close them and prevent fatal wounds from opening and bleeding out in the midst of battle. When he was fatally lacerated and cut through the abdomen by Kokushibo, he was able to continue fighting by manipulating his muscles to close his wounds.
Nichirin’s crimson-red blade: During the fight against Kokushibo, Sanemi struck Gyomei’s spiked flail with his sword, briefly tinting both blades red. Later, in the fight against Muzan, Sanemi used this technique by forcefully striking both his and Giyu’s sword, temporarily turning their blades red. Turning his blade red disrupts Demon regeneration.
During the battle against Kokushibo, the top Rank 1 Demon Slayer, Sanemi awakened his own mark. This mark, taking the form of a paper windmill with two dots on either side of his right cheek, greatly increased his power and abilities. This was clearly demonstrated when Sanemi was able to continue fighting and take on Kokushibo on level ground despite a serious abdominal injury. His physical abilities, strength and pain tolerance were considerably improved. However, he would not have been able to inflict significant damage on Kokushibo without the help of Gyomei and Muichiro. Moreover, without Muichiro and Gyomei’s intervention, he would have been almost killed twice by Kokushibo.
