MORE KNOWN AS “THE TROUBADOUR OF THE RED MOON”, HE IS ONE OF THE SIX PARTICIPANTS IN THE GREAT MAGIC TOURNAMENT. RUFUS ROY IS ALSO ONE OF SABER TOOTH’S MOST POWERFUL MAGICMAKERS.

APPARENCE

Rufus is a slim young man of average height, with long straight blond hair that reaches down to the small of his back. His hair is tied back in a small ponytail with a wide, dark headband. He has dark green, slanted eyes, delicate facial features and a slightly prominent nose. His face is partially hidden by a crimson-red mask with gold edges, which surrounds his eyes and covers the top of his nose, adding a theatrical touch to his outfit. Rufus is often depicted in a relaxed posture, with one or two arms resting behind his back.

His outfit reflects his flamboyant personality. He wears a long, crimson-red vest with gold trim that reaches down to his knees, closed slightly above the waist. He wears a cream-colored shirt with a prominent collar held in place by buttons and slightly loose sleeves adorned with intricate patterns. On his chest, he wears a jabot matching his shirt, made up of three layers of fabric of increasing size. His legs are covered by light-colored, slightly baggy, pleated pants tucked into light, wide-cuffed boots. He completes his outfit with a large red hat with gold brims, adorned with a long pink feather that falls down the left side of the hat, almost reaching the small of his back.

PERSONALITY

Rufus comes across as a calm individual, displaying a gentle demeanor in most situations. He only shows surprise when it is truly necessary. Because of his memory-making magic, he often refers to memory-related elements in his dialogues, noting facts he remembers or advising others to remember certain information. He is willing to memorize the magic of others if he deems it worthwhile. His mastery of his magic gives him absolute confidence in his abilities, which makes him extremely relaxed even during combat. For example, he leaves his afterimages exposed to enemy attacks during the Great Tournament of Magic, knowing full well that enemies won’t be able to touch his real body.
Moreover, in keeping with his nickname and flamboyant appearance, Rufus can sometimes make poetic or theatrical remarks, even during combat. He finds signs of hidden events to come in birdsong, declaring that his fight against Grey Fullbuster is a “Requiem” for him. Sometimes he can be sly, as when he mischievously points out how an enemy could use someone’s teammates against him, referring to Grey and Juvia’s presence at the hidden event.

However, this facet of his personality sometimes seems to tip over into pure cruelty. Rufus smiles calmly when his teammate Minerva seriously and wantonly injures Lucy Heartfilia of Fairy Tail. He smiles similarly when Sting Youclif and Rog Chenny, his own teammates, are about to stand trial for their failure to defeat Natsu Dragnir. However, Lecter’s apparent death at the hands of Jienma left him with a shocked expression, suggesting a certain moral restraint on the mage’s part.

APTITUDES AND SKILLS

Magic Constructing Memories: An ancient and rare spell of construction magic that grants Rufus control over the unique element that is “memory”. This spell allows him to “memorize” other forms of magic he encounters and use them as if they were his own. What makes this magic special is its ability to combine memorized spells to create new ones, merging the effects of the original spells. Rufus can also forget memorized spells, rendering them completely useless when used against him. This power gives him immunity to techniques he has already seen.
When using his magic, Rufus usually adopts a posture with his index and middle fingers pointed at his temples. He then generates spiraling glyphs behind him. Although this magic is recognized as impressive by specialists such as Grey Fullbuster and Leon Bastia, it has a limit: Rufus needs time to memorize the techniques of others. If there are too many spells performed quickly, he can’t follow them properly.

Remembering a Shooting Star Rain in the Night: Rufus uses this spell based on the memories he has of his enemies. He extends his arms outwards and releases light from his body, creating beams resembling shooting stars. These beams disperse and change trajectory to target different opponents, striking them with great force. This spell is able to bypass Juvi’s intangibility through his water body. When used during the Great Tournament of Magic, the area where the spell was cast becomes momentarily dark, giving the impression of a veritable night of shooting stars. The blast is electric in nature. Targets can, however, avoid the generated rays if warned of their arrival.

Memory Creator: Deferred Image: Rufus can manipulate the memories his opponents have of him in a certain situation, creating intangible copies of himself. These copies can speak but suffer no damage. If attacked, they simply flicker like thought projections, unaffected.

Souvenir du Continent de Feu: Rufus uses this offensive move to reproduce the effects of the fire magic he has memorized. By touching the ground with his hand, he can set it on fire, creating powerful blazes. This spell was powerful enough to defeat Eave Tilm of Blue Pegasus in a single blow during their clash at the Grand Tournament of Magic. The flames of this spell are hot enough to melt the ice of Grey Fullbuster’s Constructive Ice Magic. However, Grey noted that he had felt hotter fire in the past.

Black Lightning Saber Ice Memory: This offensive technique combines memories of Orga’s Lightning God Hunter Magic and Grey Fullbuster’s Constructive Ice Magic. Rufus extends an arm towards his target and summons numerous bolts of black lightning that strike the targeted area from above. Each pillar of electricity generates a cob-shaped formation of ice that rises from the point of contact. The exact power of this technique is unknown, but it managed to shatter the ground and partially freeze Grey when he was hit.

Sanctuary of the Tempestuous Fangs: Sweeping his arm in the direction of the opponent, Rufus generates several vertical whirlwinds that quickly converge on the target, hitting it with force and lifting it into the air.

Forgetting: Rufus has the ability to forget spells, rendering those spells ineffective no matter who uses them. By making something “forgotten”, Rufus becomes immune to its use, rendering techniques he has already seen totally ineffective against him.

Old Master Saber Rank: By memorizing magic he’s read in a book, Rufus is able to create a different type of custom magic. Combining Grey’s Constructive Ice Magic, Rufus creates a horde of ice swordsmen armed with spears capable of blocking attacks and wounding Grey.

Lightning Spitting Sword: Combining the forms of magic he’s memorized, Rufus creates a giant trapped in ice, carrying a lightning-enhanced weapon. The giant attacks with his weapon, able to knock Grey to the ground.

Colorful Flame Trenching: Rufus uses this spell by memorizing certain forms of magic from books. It releases a red wave reinforced by lightning bolts, throwing Grey into the distance.

Rain of Ancient Wisdom: Rufus summons a luminous magic circle above his enemy. The light renders the opponent unable to move on the ground, creating an effect similar to gravity.

Telekinesis: Rufus is able to manipulate inanimate objects, as evidenced by his handling of books while “memorizing” ancient magic.

Developed perception: Rufus possesses exceptional tracking and localization skills, enabling him to find the precise position of specific targets, even at a distance. He can identify his enemies among numerous clones and locate all Fairy Tail Team members scattered across Crocus. The precision of his abilities has been praised by Mavis Vermillion, considering its importance in Saber Tooth’s strategy during the Great Tournament of Magic. It’s not yet known whether these abilities are magical in nature, but Rufus closes his eyes and gestures near his head to use them.

Developed speed: Rufus is remarkably quick and agile, easily dodging many of his enemies’ attacks, even from different directions. He dodged Grey Fullbuster’s spear with quick, acrobatic jumps. What’s more, he was able to move quickly to protect Minerva from the Fairy Tail Team members who were about to attack her, covering the distance to the Domus Flau stands in the blink of an eye.
