Rangiku Matsumoto is a Shinigami originally from Northern Rukongai. She held the position of lieutenant in the 10th Division of Gotei 13, under the command of Captain Isshin Shiba and then Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya.
Between these two events, she also had a child following a drunken affair with Seireitou Kawahiru. This affair resulted in the birth of a daughter named Sayuri Matsumoto. After the losses she suffered in the war against Sōsuke Aizen and the Wandenreich, Rangiku decided to devote herself to the practice of Jinzen for ten years. In doing so, she sought to hone her powers and overcome the scars left in her heart after losing everyone she held dear.
Following this, Shunsui Kyōraku asked her to become an advisor and instructor in the Basara division, which is based in the Human World.

PRESENTATION
She exudes a presence that captivates all who lay eyes on her, leaving them in awe. Rangiku is a woman of such exquisite beauty that many consider her appearance to be perfection incarnate. Although she has often changed the length of her hair over the years, her golden-blonde hair still has a distinctive wavy texture that can’t be mistaken for any other. In the sunlight, it appears to be made of the purest metal, a brilliant golden color. Her peaceful blue eyes, as vast as the sky itself, give many people, men and women alike, a special feeling when they look her straight in the eye. Whether it’s the superficial charm of her beauty or the depth that emanates from this woman through her gentle gaze, it’s hard not to feel drawn to her.
Beyond these striking aspects that immediately capture attention, she has a distinctive mole located below the right corner of her full lips. Rangiku is well aware of the effect her generous breasts have on the minds of men, and sometimes even women. She doesn’t hesitate to intentionally adjust her uniform in a provocative way, showing off her cleavage to influence people and get what she wants. Seventeen months after the defeat of Sōsuke Aizen, Rangiku adopted a new hairstyle that was significantly shorter than her previous one, stopping at shoulder level, and much more wavy.
Like the other Shinigami, Rangiku wears the standard shihakusho uniform and is known to occasionally adorn her outfit with various scarves while on duty with Gotei 13. Most recently, she was seen wearing a long pink scarf draped over her shoulders. However, an accessory she wears regularly is a thin gold necklace that slips between her cleavage. When she was a lieutenant, she wore her official armband attached to her belt, rather than around her arm. Unlike most Shinigami, Rangiku wears her Zanpakutō on her back. When in the real world with her Gigai, she has been seen to dress very provocatively or elegantly. She wears the school uniform with several buttons undone, usually revealing her ample bosom, just as she usually does in Soul Society with her Gotei 13 uniform.

While her beauty is incomparable, especially to the men of Soul Society, it’s her open-minded, no-holds-barred personality that stands out the most. She often presents herself in different guises, all of which complement Rangiku’s unique personality and play a part in who she is as a woman. At heart, she’s a person who seems to focus most of her attention on getting what she wants, and she doesn’t react well when her wishes are denied. She’s strong and persistent, preferring to do things her own way rather than simply following the lead of others. However, this can change when she recognizes someone as her superior. Even as a subordinate, she tends to act alone when she feels it’s necessary. Her generally free-spirited attitude contrasts sharply with that of her serious former captain, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, which often led to them bickering: she would tease him and he would berate her.
When she was a lieutenant in Gotei 13, she was often regarded as a slacker who hated dealing with paperwork. She didn’t hesitate to delegate this task to someone else, especially men who clearly had a soft spot for her, such as Shūhei Hisagi and Iyori Mochizuki. Rangiku knows perfectly well how to seduce men, especially those in her own division, with the exception of her former captain, with her looks, and she knows very well how to take advantage of them. She prides herself on her astute femininity and often charms the hearts of many to achieve her goals. That’s how she tried (and failed) to seduce Ichigo Kurosaki into allowing her to stay at his home during her intervention group’s mission in the human world.
Of course, this isn’t without its faults, as she’s often annoyed by the excessive and eccentric attention some individuals, like Keigo Asano, pay her as they’re seduced by her beauty. Nevertheless, she seems to lack modesty in all situations, unashamedly referring to her own breasts in polite conversation, even if it makes others uncomfortable. What’s more, when Rangiku exposes her beauty and others don’t give her the attention she feels she deserves, she’s willing to go to extremes to intentionally attract attention. At one point, she even considered stripping completely naked because no one complimented her tight swimsuit.
Despite her self-centeredness, Rangiku was not devoid of morality and showed compassion for the feelings of others. She was often there to comfort her loved ones when they were bothered by something, such as Momo Hinamori and Izuru Kira’s concerns about their respective captains and their departure. Rangiku also went out of her way to convince Orihime Inoue not to let her role in Ichigo’s life get her down. Before his death, she harbored deep feelings for Gin Ichimaru, who had been with her from early childhood until the incident with Sōsuke Aizen. However, despite their close relationship, the two didn’t interact much at the Seireitei.
The precise reasons are unknown, but it’s highly likely that Gin’s intense desire for revenge against Aizen often led her to neglect Rangiku, which is ironic since her revenge was motivated by a desire to repair something Rangiku had supposedly lost. She was clearly upset by his betrayal, and even then, her feelings for him persisted as she held him in her arms during the final stages of the conflict with Aizen. This landmark event played an important role in Rangiku’s perception of the relationship. For a long time, with the exception of a few brief liaisons, Rangiku loved only Gin and hoped that the obstacles between them would hopefully disappear. However, this was not destined to come true, and after Gin’s death, the devastating blow of losing someone she loved so much began to distance her from the idea of healthy romantic relationships.
She’s a capable fighter, reflecting her status as a high-ranking lieutenant, and shows great seriousness when circumstances demand it. Rangiku proves to be a skilled strategist, thinking through moves that enable her to carry out intelligent actions by identifying her opponents’ weaknesses. In this sense, she often uses her charm to manipulate others, demonstrating her talent for detecting weak points and exploiting them to her advantage. Despite her capacity for compassion, she also possesses a sadistic streak. This trait can manifest itself in combat, particularly in the methods she uses with the powers of her Zanpakutō. Although she enjoys the attention of men, she has occasionally been confronted with attempts at seduction to which she clearly doesn’t adhere. Her response to these situations cannot be discussed in polite conversation, but in short, she doesn’t hesitate to use the powers of her Zanpakutō to inflict a violent injury to the male reproductive organ. Rangiku also doesn’t hesitate to strike when her enemy drops his guard, sharing this trait with many Gotei 13 veterans, preferring to eliminate her opponents rather than respect any sense of honor on the battlefield.
Rangiku’s favorite food is dried persimmon and she tends to enjoy various types of strange food, a characteristic she shares with Orihime. She dislikes bamboo shoots as she finds their taste too strong and their texture unpleasant. She is also passionate about traditional Japanese dances and, in addition to her shihakushō dresses, she likes to shop excessively for clothes in various department stores in the human world. When thirsty, she seeks out free companions and invites them out with her, then asks them to buy her drinks so she doesn’t have to spend any money. However, Rangiku tends to downplay her actions when drunk, which has led to various unsavory situations, such as her first affair with Seireitou, who was also under the influence of alcohol, and which resulted in the birth of Sayuri Matsumoto.
