PAIKUHAN DESIGN
Paikuhan was partially designed by Akira Toriyama, the official creator of Dragon Ball Z. That’s pretty rare for a character from an OVA. He was created to resemble Piccolo. The production team instructed him to “Use Piccolo as a reference for facial expressions”. 📝
APPARENCE
Paikuhan is a powerful, muscular, green-skinned humanoid warrior. He is slightly taller than Goku. He has thick, pink lips and large eyes. His irises are red and his pupils are black. He has no visible nose and a receding forehead. His skull is bald, with a few black spots on top. His ears are rather flat and square. 🧟
He wears a blue-sleeved shirt, white pants, an elegant red belt and brown boots with beige soles. To intensify his training, he’s used to wearing extremely heavy extra clothing, just like Piccolo. In reality, these are several white dresses that he fastens with a brown belt adorned with a golden circle in the middle. Let’s not forget his imposing turban hat and long white bandana. 🏋️♂️
PAIKUHAN’S PERSONALITY
One of Paikuhan’s great qualities is his great wisdom. He uses this wisdom to his advantage when planning his attacks. Paikuhan doesn’t hesitate to correct Goku on his imprecise dodges and lack of concentration, offering advice in the midst of battle. 🧙
In his first appearance, Paikuhan says almost nothing until his fight with Goku. He shares similar heroic traits to Kakarot and fights only for the good. Goku compares his personality to Piccolo’s and says the two would get along very well. 😎
In the film Fusion Reborn, we see him become jealous when Goku successfully fights Janemba, while he fails to do so. We also see him lose patience when he asks Janemba where he’s from. When things go wrong, we can see him seriously angry. 😡
BIOGRAPHY OF PAIKUHAN
ORIGINS AND BACKGROUND
Paikuhan was originally a warrior living on an unknown planet in the western part of Universe 7. After an unknown but heroic death, Paikuhan was allowed to travel to the small planet of his Kaio. There, he trained intensely and became the best student of the Western Kaio. 🥇
DRAGON BALL Z
OTHER WORLD’S TOURNAMENT
Shortly after Goku and King Kaio, Paikuhan makes his entrance for a meeting with Kaio Shin. It’s important to note that Paikuhan and Western Kaio are on bad terms with King Kaio. After an argument in which Western Kaio suggests a confrontation between Goku and Paikuhan, Grand Kaio intervenes and asks the two fighters to go to Hell to deal with several deceased villains who are causing a lot of trouble there, including Freezer, King Cold, Cell, Recoome, Barta, Jeice and Guldo. In Hell, Goku defeats the Ginyu commando and Paikuhan easily defeats Freezer, Cold and Cell Parfait by piercing them on a large spike ball and imprisoning them in a prison for spirits. 💪
Later, after Goku and Paikuhan become friends, another world tournament is organized in honor of the recently deceased Kaio king. Eventually, Goku and Paikuhan reach the final of the tournament and face off determinedly to win the prize. Throughout, Paikuhan dominates his opponent. However, Goku analyzes the situation and finally discovers the main weakness of Paikuhan’s Thunder Rapid Lightning Attack, and uses it against him by unleashing his Instant Kamehameha, thus eliminating the Western Universe champion. However, both Goku and Paikuhan are eliminated as they hit the arena roof earlier. It is implied that Grand Kaïo explained this, as Paikuhan and Goku were stronger than he was. The Western Warrior declares that he will train hard to defeat Goku one day, just as Piccolo had announced… 👊
Following the arrival of Super Buu and a series of massacres on Earth, Yamcha and Krillin are sent straight to the planet of the Great Kaio for special training. There, they meet Paikuhan and many other deceased fighters. When Majin Buu travels to the planet of the Great Kaio to hunt down Goku and Vegeta, the warrior from the West boldly confronts the fearsome monster, unaware of his true terrifying nature. As Little Buu prepares to destroy the planet with an immense Shockball, Paikuhan and Goku’s friends are saved at the last minute when the demon teleports into the Sacred World of Kaio, attracted by Goku and Vegeta’s ki. Throughout the battle in this sacred dimension of Kaio, Paikuhan observes and comments on events alongside the other dead warriors. He watches the incredible final battle unfold. 🤼♀️
PAIKUHAN IN DRAGON BALL: FUSION REBORN
Paikuhan wins against the fighter named Arqua and thus qualifies for the final of the Beyond Tournament. However, before his clash with Son Goku, the fight is interrupted by the arrival of the fearsome demon Janemba. The latter has trapped King Enma and transformed almost the entire afterlife into a vast field of crystal jelly. As Goku and his new ally Paikuhan are sent to investigate, they come face to face with Janemba’s first form, which resembles a huge yellow monster. Unfortunately, they are unable to break the trap that holds King Enma imprisoned. While Goku battles Janemba, Paikuhan tries several times to free the king, to no avail. He tries various explosive techniques, but they prove ineffective. Finally, losing patience, he insults King Enma, causing a crack in the jelly. He continues to insult the king in the hope of breaking the trap, but it’s not enough to make the dreaded prison give way. 💥
Paikuhan then realizes that the only way to free King Enma is to defeat Janemba. Indeed, it was the demon who created all the traps. So he decides to support Goku and Vegeta, who has joined them in the fight. The two Saiyans try to merge, but the demon constantly interrupts them. Paikuhan decided to face him alone and engaged in a courageous battle with Janemba. He manages to inflict wounds thanks to his well-placed insults. However, this is not enough and Janemba quickly gets the upper hand. The demon delivers a terrific blow to his head, driving its spikes into the sides of his skull. Fortunately, his efforts pay off, as Goku and Vegeta finally manage to merge to become the fearsome warrior Gogeta. Gogeta destroys Janemba without too much effort and restores peace to the realm of the dead. Paikuhan’s last appearance is during the battle, as he comments on Gogeta’s attacks before losing consciousness. ✨
HOW POWERFUL IS PAIKUHAN?
Paikuhan is without doubt one of the most powerful warriors in the western part of Universe 7. Despite the extremely heavy weight of his equipment, he shows no real weakness in battle. That’s why the Great Kaio chose him to defeat the enemies in Hell. A fighter for justice, he accepted this mission without questioning the villains he was to face. He calmly defies them and defeats many opponents without difficulty. He knocks out the tyrant Freezer and his father, King Cold, in a single blow. Next, he triumphs over Cell Parfait in just two attacks, thanks to his burning shot. 💪
In the Outerworld Tournament, Paikuhan easily qualifies for the final. He manages to defeat the fighter Olibu, despite being considered one of the most powerful warriors in the northern part of the galaxy, without too much difficulty. During the final against Goku, Paikuhan is virtually unaffected by our hero’s first attack. After Son Goku has put up a serious fight and his power proves to be slightly superior to Paikuhan’s, the latter withdraws his weights. This prompts Goku to use his Super Saiyan form. Despite the significant increase in Goku’s power, the two fighters are almost at equality (although Paikuhan’s profile in the game Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 indicates that Paikuhan had a slight advantage). One incredible thing is that he manages to cope with Son Goku’s Super Kaio-Ken technique. As Kakarot pointed out, Paikuhan is an extremely effective fighter, with virtually no blind spots or weaknesses. This forces Son Goku to feign defeat to take Paikuhan by surprise, a strategy that enables him to defeat this powerful warrior. 😎
In the film Fusion Reborn, Paikuhan is clearly outmatched by Janemba. He’s repelled by his first transformation, the one that looks like a big yellow monster. When he confronts Super Janemba, he’s almost killed in a single blow. In comparison, Goku Super Saiyan 3 triumphs over Janemba’s first form in just a few attacks and even manages to fight Super Janemba. 😨
