History of Obanai Iguro
Obanai came from a clan of thieves who lived off excessive wealth stolen from victims killed by the demon they worshipped. This demon took the form of a woman with a serpentine body and face, and had a predilection for newborn babies, which the family sacrificed to her in exchange for riches.
As the first boy born to the family in 370 years, Obanai spent all his days locked in a wooden cage, overprotected by his family who brought him an excessive amount of rich food, to the point of sickness. The snake-demon also became attached to Obanai because of his rare peculiarity of having multicolored eyes, and every night it would sneak into his cage to stare at him in the dark, terrifying Obanai to the point of preventing him from sleeping.
At the age of twelve, Obanai was finally allowed to leave his cell. He was led into a room that resembled a sumptuous shrine and confronted for the first time by the serpent demon. The demon noticed that Obanai was very small and wondered whether it should wait for him to grow a little before devouring him. Finally, she decided to do so, and adjusted her mouth to make it wider, right up to her ears, to match his. The blood Obanai shed in this procedure was collected in a chalice, which the demon then drank.
Returning to his cell, his wound now bandaged, Obanai thought only of escape and survival. He began scratching at his cell fence with a stolen hairpin during the night, living in constant anxiety during the day, fearing discovery. The only being he could trust was the stray snake in his cage, Kaburamaru.
After a while, Obanai finally managed to escape. As he ran, the snake-demon began to pursue him, almost catching up and nearly killing him before the Pillar of Flame chanced to come to his rescue. Because of Obanai’s escape, the snake demon had killed all fifty of his relatives, and the only surviving member of his bloodline was his elder cousin, who had also been saved by the Pillar. However, when the two were reunited, Obanai’s cousin rejected him and blamed him for the death of their family.
His cousin’s words had a profound effect on Obanai, driving him to join the Demon Slayer Corps and direct all his rage towards demons, thinking he’d feel better if he risked his life to protect others.
Personality of Obanai Iguro
Obanai is a very rigid and strict person, who cares little for those who don’t meet Demon Slayer standards. His expectations of his fellow Demon Slayers are almost unrealistic: he blames Tengen Uzui for suffering serious injuries against the “weakest” of the Upper Moons and tells him to “fight to the death” when Tengen insists on retiring. In reality, the Demon Slayer Corps hasn’t managed to kill a single Upper Moon in 113 years, and Shinobu Kocho later asserts that each Upper Moon is equivalent in power to three Pillars.
Obanai’s devotion to the future of the Demon Slayer Corps seems to weigh on the others. He tries to force Tengen to stay with the Demon Slayers even after losing an eye and an arm, and he ties up lower-ranking Demon Slayers and uses them as obstacles during Pillar training for rather petty reasons. He also regards the new Demon Slayer recruits as weak and incapable of improvement, expressing surprise when Tengen informs him that Tanjiro Kamado survived the mission.
Despite his ruthless personality, he cares deeply for two people: Kagaya Ubuyashiki and Mitsuri Kanroji. It’s obvious to most of their classmates that Obanai has feelings for Mitsuri, although neither Tanjiro nor Mitsuri herself will confirm this. He even gives her the green socks she wears as a gift. He threatens Tanjiro not to get too close to her (by his standards), and is the first person to meet her in the Fortress of Dimensional Infinity.
Abilities and powers of Obanai Iguro
As Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Obanai is a formidable fencer with great power.
Natural capabilities of Obanai Iguro
Master Swordsman: As a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, Obanai is one of the most powerful and skilled swordsmen in the entire organization.
Enhanced strength: Obanai possesses incredible physical strength, as evidenced by his ability to pin Tanjiro to the ground with great force, to the point where Tanjiro declares he can neither move nor breathe.
Increased endurance: after being hit by Muzan’s attack and receiving a blood injection, he manages to continue fighting alongside Giyu, unlike Mitsuri, another Hashira member, who was badly affected by the same attack.
Kaburamaru: Obanai, being partially blind in his right eye, has developed a fighting technique using his snake, Kaburamaru. Kaburamaru is able to read enemy attacks and transmit this information to Obanai. The extent of this technique is demonstrated when Obanai is completely blinded by Muzan, but nevertheless manages to continue fighting as if nothing had happened.
Nichirin’s Crimson Red Blade: During the battle against Muzan, after manifesting a demon-slaying mark and remembering how Muichiro had turned his blade red, Obanai channels all his strength into gripping his blade, causing it to turn crimson red. However, in doing so, he used too much force and almost fainted. Crimson Blades are extremely powerful, as they disrupt demon powers and regeneration.
Mark of the Demon Slayer: During the fight against Muzan, Obanai awakened his own mark. This manifests itself in the form of three snake-shaped tattoos with large dots, extending from his right arm to the right side of his chest. This mark has enhanced all Obanai’s natural abilities, as evidenced by his ability to inflict powerful sword slashes against Muzan, and to dodge and maneuver quickly to avoid his extremely fast attacks. She has also improved her physical stamina and resistance, enabling her to continue fighting despite her serious injuries. What’s more, his physical senses were greatly enhanced to the point where he could fight with ease despite his blindness.
A transparent world: During the fight against Muzan, after receiving instructions from Gyomei, Obanai briefly managed to access the Transparent World.
The art of the sword
Singular weapon: Like his companions Hashira Mitsuri, Gyomei, Shinobu and Tengen, Obanai wields a unique Nichirin blade. His blade takes the form of an Indonesian kris, with undulations that complement Obanai’s serpentine breathing techniques.
Serpentine breathing: this is a breathing style that focuses on twisting and bending the sword, imitating the movements of a snake as it glides. Although it shares similarities with Mitsuri’s love breathing style, Obanai’s sword is more like a snaking blade, while Mitsuri’s is long, supple and reminiscent of a sharp whip.
First form: Snake coiling – Obanai makes a circular slash in front of him as he turns his sword.
Second form: Venomous fangs of the narrow head – Obanai moves behind his opponent at dazzling speed to slice his head.
Third form: Spiral strangle – Obanai bends his sword like a slithering snake and quickly decapitates his opponent.
Fourth form: Two-headed reptile – Obanai leaps forward and performs a horizontal cut that crosses the target.
Fifth form: Creeping Serpent – Obanai uses his flexible sword and curves it from right to left at incredible speed. This technique enables him to decapitate several targets at once.
