Makio has a headstrong personality similar to that of Inosuke Hashibira. She is bold and confident in her actions. Of her two co-wives, Makio has less patience with Suma. When the women fight in the underground cave, Makio can be seen reproaching Suma for being condescending, which irritates her a little. Later, when the three women reunite, Makio slaps Suma and calls her an idiot after the latter makes insensitive remarks about Hinatsuru’s death.

However, Makio also has a soft side. She worries about Tengen’s declining health after their big battle and feels relieved when Nezuko heals him.

At one point in her life, Makio married Tengen Uzui, along with Suma and Hinatsuru. After leaving the clan, his family traveled to meet Kagaya Ubuyashiki and fight as members of the Demon Slayer Corps.

At some point in the past, Makio received an instruction alongside Suma and Hinatsuru from Tengen, concerning his personal ideology: put their own lives first, then respectable humans, and finally himself. Later, when Makio questions this idea in private, as it contradicts what they were taught as kunoichi, Hinatsuru assures her that as long as she agrees, Tengen will approve too. She also wants all four of them to withdraw from the front line once they’ve defeated a High Rank.

Arc of the entertainment district

Makio | Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba
Makio first arrives in the district to work undercover as a courtesan at the Ogimoto house, with the aim of gathering information about reports of a demon in the district and passing it on to Tengen via a raven. But one day, Makio is captured by Daki’s obi and quickly questioned about the identity of the person to whom she is sending the letters. Refusing to give up her mission, Makio is kidnapped by the obi sash and locked in his underground bunker.

Later, when Inosuke discovers the bunker, he cuts the Obi, freeing Makio and Suma. The two women then help him protect the girls from being reabsorbed by the Obi. After finding Tengen in the cave, Makio and Suma are freed and lead the evacuation of the district’s citizens.

Once Makio and Suma have managed to evacuate the citizens, they return towards the end of the battle and survey the damage. Makio and her co-wives provide first aid for Tengen, but discover that their antidotes don’t work against Gyutaro’s poison. After panicking for a moment, Nezuko approaches the group and heals Tengen with her abilities, prompting joy and embraces from the women.

During the cleanup, Makio and his co-wives can be seen helping Tengen leave the battlefield so he can begin to recover.

  • According to the second fanbook, Makio is actually a distant cousin of Tengen.
  • Makio’s name is composed solely of the hiragana “ma” (ま?), “ki” (き?) and “wo” (を?) respectively.
  • The reason “wo” is pronounced and spelled “o” is due to an obsolete pronunciation in Japanese vocabulary.
