APPARENCE OF KRILIN
The first thing that surprises when you see the character of Krilin is that he hasno nose! But don’t panic, the latter can smell, as we can see throughout the episodes of the series. 👃
The second thing we notice is his bald head. The reason for this is simple: previously Krilin was a monk and underwent a monastic education, based on that of the Shaolin monks, which explains why he has a shaved head. Just a quick reminder, Shaolin monks are Chinese monks from the Shaolin monastery founded in the 5th century, and receiving an education based in particular on the martial art. And what martial art is that? The kung-fu of course! 🥋
The third thing is the curious presence of 6 points on his skull. Here again, we stay in the monastic universe, as these 6 points were made by incense burnings obtained during his training, with the moxibustion technique. This is a therapy found in traditional Chinese medicine, and involves burning dried mugwort on a specific part of the body. Krilin appears dressed in the same way throughout Dragon Ball, with an orange garment again reminiscent of thegarment worn by Shaolin monks, a blue belt and shoes of the same color. In kung fu, blue represents the 5th degree of mastery, associated with control. It signifies that the student is learning to master his mind and body.
Finally, we can see a kanji (character of Chinese origin in the Japanese language) located at the level of his heart on his garment, 亀, pronounced kame and meaning tortue. This kanji is worn by all disciples trained by Kamé Sennin, who is one of the most important martial arts masters in Dragon Ball. 🉐
This orange outfit can be found in most Dragon Ball episodes, the exceptions being:
- During his very 1st appearance, Krilin can be seen dressed in a garment reminiscent of Chinese costumes: the top being in a sort of orangey yellow, with the sleeves folded over the shoulders, a purple belt around the waist, orange pants, and white sock species. 👕
- During the Androids saga and during the Cell saga, Krilin will tackle an outfit reminiscent of Goku’s in the Vegeta Saga.
- In the Boo Saga, we’ll get to see Krilin with black hair for the 1st time in the Japanese anime series. Indeed, Krilin decides to let himself grow them and wear much more casual outfits than his usual battle outfit, it’s a change! At his wedding with C-18, he’ll take the chic even further by wearing an orange short-sleeved shirt, with white shorts and pretty red sandals.
- In Dragon Ball Super and in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods, Krilin can still be seen with his hair, but cut short and in spikes. He wears a sort ofChinese coat in green, with the same kanji as his usual outfit, and navy-blue pants.
- In Dragon Ball Z: The Resurrection of F, Krilin has become a police officer and therefore wears the uniform provided for this purpose: a yellow polo shirt, featuring a badge, and purple shorts. He can also be seen wearing a helmet marked “police”.
- In his spare time, Krilin wears a red shirt, with jeans and sneakers, a very casual outfit. 🧥
- In Dragon Ball GT, Krilin is elderly and now has salt-and-pepper hair, and wears a mustache. He can be seen wearing a white shirt, topped with a green sleeveless vest and purple tie. He wears brown pants and black shoes.
He’s also seen with a blue suit and tie of the same color depending on the episode. 📺
KRILIN’S PERSONALITY
Krilin is initially seen as succumbing to jealousy and being selfish, since he hasn’t obeyed the rules of the training provided by Master Roshi. Despite being Goku’s great rival, a beautiful friendship will eventually be born between these two, which will allow Krilin to become a much better person. 👨❤️👨
Krilin is considered the strongest earthling in the Dragon Ball saga. This “human” status, moreover, makes it easier for Goku to identify with men. Krilin acquired this “superhuman” status during long training that enabled him to develop his strength through the use of ki, which he masters to a high level, or when the Great Dean, Saichôrô, allows him to unlock the full extent of his potential.
The development of his ki was made possible during the Namek saga, thanks to Guru. Krilin is keen to help his friends, which shows the development of his personality and generosity. He is courageous and resourceful throughout the saga. This character is very popular with Dragon Ball fans, and is considered the strongest human in the world, with Yamcha saying so to Krilin’s daughter at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. He’s one of the series’ key human characters, remaining present throughout.
This big heart is particularly evident during the saga Vegeta, when he doesn’t kill Vegeta and instead offers him the chance to continue living, after Goku is also urged to do so. He shows this same generosity withC-18, and so much the better, given that he’ll marry her afterwards and have a beautiful little daughter with her, Marron. 👶

KRILIN’S PERSONALITY
At first, Krilin is perceived as a jealous and selfish person, as he didn’t follow the rules of Master Roshi’s training. Despite this, a beautiful friendship develops between him and Goku, enabling Krilin to become a much better person. 👨❤️👨
Krilin is considered the strongest earthling in the Dragon Ball saga. This “human” status makes it easier for Goku to identify with human beings. Krilin acquired his “superhuman” status through intensive training, developing his strength through the use of ki, which he masters to a high level. In addition, Grand Dean Saichôrô gave him the opportunity to unleash his full potential.
The development of his ki was made possible during the Namek saga thanks to Guru. Krilin is always ready to help his friends, which testifies to the evolution of his personality and his generosity. He shows courage and ingenuity throughout the saga. This character is much loved by Dragon Ball fans and is considered the strongest human in the world, as Yamcha told Krilin’s daughter at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. He is one of the key human characters in the series, and remains present throughout.
This great generosity is particularly evident during the Vegeta saga, when he decides not to kill Vegeta and instead gives him the chance to live on, supported by Goku. He shows the same generosity towards C-18, which is a good thing since he ends up marrying her and having a beautiful little girl with her, Marron. 👶
If we now turn to Krilin’s flaws, we can notice a few little perverse tendencies, particularly when he was a child. He tried to set up a plan to show Bulma’s chest in front of Master Roshi in order to make his nose bleed. This tendency is also evident in his personality, as he is unable to ride the Magic Cloud, which requires a pure heart to ride.
Fortunately, as he grows older, Krilin becomes less perverse and more inclined towards romantic love. However, his old tendencies sometimes resurface, as when he saves Nain in Dragon Ball Z: Super Warrior Attack! She hugs him, which makes our dear Krilin blush.
Krilin retains his jealousy, as shown in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, when Krilin warns against any attempt on his wife’s life when she’s training with the Warrior of the Future. He is also concerned about protecting his wife and daughter. 🎮
BIOGRAPHY OF KRILIN
Krilin was originally a monk at Orin Temple. He joined the temple at the age of 4 and trained there for 8 years. During these years of training, Krilin was bullied by other students because of his small size. Tired of this situation, he decided to leave the temple and go to Kamé Sennin, also known as Master Roshi, to become his disciple and follow his training. Kamé Sennin agrees to take him on as a disciple after Krilin bribes him with naughty magazines. 📙
Krilin trains alongside Goku, whom he initially regards as his rival, as well as a childlike character with a tendency to be naive. However, as their training progresses, Krilin realizes that Goku is in fact an exceptional fighter, far more powerful than he. Goku and Krilin end up becoming the best of friends.
Both characters gain power and strength during their apprenticeship, although Goku remains the more powerful of the two. They finally manage to move the huge boulder that Master Roshi entrusted to them at the start of their training. The 21st World Martial Arts Tournament definitively seals the immense friendship between Krilin and Goku, as can be seen throughout Dragon Ball.
Under the tutelage of Kame Sennin, Krilin progresses and grows stronger and stronger. At his first world martial arts tournament, Krilin defeats all those who had harassed him at the Temple of Orin. In the semi-final of this tournament, he finds himself up against Jackie Chun, who is none other than Kame Sennin in disguise. He puts up a good fight, even managing to lure Master Roshi out of the ring with a pair of panties. Master Roshi’s perverse side always loses him 🤣. But let’s not forget that Kamé Sennin remains the master and therefore beats his pupil, even though the latter came off honorably!

SAGA DU RUBAN ROUGE
After his defeat at the World Martial Arts Tournament, Krilin continues his training with Kame Sennin. However, he interrupts it to accompany his friend Goku on the quest for the Dragon Balls and fight the Red Ribbon army. 🔮
Krilin, Bulma and Goku have many adventures in this eponymous saga. They set off in search of a cave containing pirate treasure. They find it, but are followed by General Blue, who confronts Krilin and defeats him. General Blue almost kills Krilin when he uses his telekinetic power to freeze him in place. Fortunately, Goku manages to overpower him and defeat the General while saving Krilin. The three friends then quickly escape from the cave, which collapses in the aftermath of the fight. 💥
Despite everything, Bulma manages to recover a ruby before the cave disappears, and she brings it back with Krilin and Goku to Kame Sennin Island. However, the ruby is stolen by General Blue and Lunch, who tie up the three companions and attempt to blow up the island. Lunch, however, regains his sanity and frees Goku, who disposes of the bomb and sets off in pursuit of Blue. Krilin easily wins the preliminary matches and the various finals of the tournament. 🏆
Chaozu finds himself up against Krilin in the quarter-finals, thanks to his power of telekinesis, which arranges the draw. At first, Krilin seems to dominate the fight against Chaozu, but the latter uses his telekinetic powers. Eventually, Krilin defeats Chaozu and advances to the semi-finals, where he faces Goku. The two friends engage in a no-holds-barred battle. Krilin begins by throwing a Kame Hamé Ha at Goku, who blocks the attack. Once again, Krilin comes face to face with Goku and is delighted to find his friend! During the fights, Krilin confronts Piccolo, the son of King Piccolo. He uses the flying technique against him, to which Piccolo counters with the afterimage technique, which finally leads Krilin to give up the fight after a free kick from Piccolo. It’s Goku’s turn to fight Piccolo, and he ends up shattering his opponent’s limbs. Krilin, Tenshinhan and their friends try to come to Goku’s aid, but Piccolo stops them. Finally, after a long battle, Goku, Krilin and their friends manage to defeat Piccolo. 🏆

The Saiyan Saga arc
This saga begins five years after Goku’s victory over Piccolo at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Krilin is on the island of Kame Sennin, where he meets Gohan, Goku’s son. Their meeting is interrupted by a surprise visit from Raditz, Goku’s brother, who reveals Goku’s Saiyan origins to everyone. Raditz violently beats Krilin and takes Gohan with him. Krilin and Kamé Sennin then offer Goku the chance to rescue Gohan and fight Raditz. Finally, Goku makes a pact with Piccolo to defeat Raditz before parting ways.💥
The fight begins and Krilin arrives just in time to support the dying Goku. Goku’s death plunges Krilin into deep sadness. He is also saddened to see Piccolo take his son’s friend to train, unable to stop him, as Piccolo is far more powerful. Fearing Chi-Chi’s reaction, Krilin keeps Goku’s death a secret. 🚨
Later, Krilin goes off to train with Kami and Mr. Popo in the company of Tien, Yamcha, Yajirobe and Chaozu to prepare to face the Saiyans. During this training, Krilin develops his power considerably, enabling him, along with his companions as well as Piccolo and Gohan, to fight Vegeta and Nappa while waiting for Goku. During the fight, Yamcha is killed, which causes Krilin great pain and triggers a ferocious attack on his part, but it’s not enough to defeat the Saiyans. During the fight, Piccolo is also killed, and the only survivors still fighting are Krilin and Gohan. Nappa is then eliminated by Vegeta. 💀
Goku saves them by defeating Vegeta. Krilin helps his friend by bringing the Spirit Bomb, designed to defeat Vegeta. Although he narrowly misses his target, Gohan manages to bounce the bomb and hurls it at Vegeta, injuring him. At the end of the fight, Krilin is the only survivor among his friends still able to stand. He then approaches the Saiyan prince, borrowing Yajirobe’s katana in the process, with the aim of killing him.
Goku stops him, explaining that Vegeta is defenseless and that his death would not be fair. The Freezer Saga arc
In this saga, with the death of Kami and Piccolo, the Dragon Balls are no longer usable. Piccolo, Kami, Yamcha, Tien and Chaozu are supposed to be permanently dead in the absence of the Crystal Balls. However, Krilin has a sudden idea: since the Dragon Balls were created by the people of Namek, why not go there to use the Dragon Balls and bring their friends back to life? So he sets off with Bulma and Gohan.
Arriving on the planet Namek, they discover to their horror that it’s under siege by Freezer, a ruthless tyrant who destroyed planet Vegeta, Goku and Vegeta’s place of origin. Freezer is also seeking the Dragon Balls to gain immortality. Observing the situation, Gohan and Krilin rescue a young Namekian, Dendé, from Freezer’s soldiers. Dendé leads them to Guru, the guardian of Namek, who unleashes their potential by increasing their power. Subsequently, a long and intense battle breaks out between Krilin, Gohan, Vegeta and Freezer to recover the Dragon Balls and thwart Freezer’s plans.
Meanwhile, Goku, who has been released from hospital, learns of the whereabouts of his friends and the difficult situation on planet Namek. He immediately goes there and confronts a group of Freezer’s soldiers. The fight leaves him with severe injuries, and Vegeta takes him to rest and recuperate in a health center. 👩⚕️
Krilin, Gohan and Vegeta manage to recover the Dragon Balls. Vegeta then wishes to obtain immortality, but is unable to do so as he does not know the password to use the crystal balls. Finally, Dendé reveals the password and uses the Dragon Balls to resurrect Piccolo while Vegeta is asleep. This wish also allows Kami to return. 🔮
However, the fight is far from over. Freezer returns to the attack and transforms, adopting a much more powerful form. He attacks Krilin, impaling him with one of his horns, then throws him into the sea, leaving Krilin for dead. Dendé rushes to him and uses her healing powers to cure him. Mad with rage, Krilin uses the Destructo disk to violently attack Freezer and cut off part of his tail. Freezer retaliates by attacking him, unaware that this is Krilin’s ruse to distract him while Dendé again uses his powers, this time on Gohan.
Piccolo appears and merges with the warrior Nail before joining Krilin, Vegeta and Gohan in their fight against Freezer. However, Freezer is informed of Piccolo’s abilities and kills him to prevent him from healing the fighters again.
Freezer also attacks Krilin, killing him, and then threatens to attack Gohan. These events trigger monstrous anger in Goku, who transforms into Super Saiyan for the first time, enabling him to defeat Freezer. Freezer then desperately tries to destroy the planet Namek, apparently resulting in Goku’s death too.
Once the fight is over, Bulma uses the Dragon Balls of Namek to wish Krilin, and all those killed by Freezer, back to life. Krilin returns to planet Earth and takes advantage of this second chance given to him.

Anecdotes about Krilin
- Krilin thinks his baldness makes him more powerful. According to him, martial arts fighters shave their heads to bring out their ki and power, citing Kamé Sennin in particular. However, Kame Sennin disputes this theory, pointing out that he is naturally bald. 👨🦲
- Another intriguing feature of Krilin is his lack of a nose. Series creator Akira Toriyama explains in an interview that Krilin breathes through his skin. This remains an amusing question, but it doesn’t prevent him from fighting valiantly. Goku himself jokes about it during the fight against Cell. 👃
- Krilin has met his death 4 times over the course of the various Dragon Ball sagas, but has always been resurrected: the first time by Tambourine, the second time by being impaled by one of Freezer’s horns and then literally exploded by the latter, the third time by being transformed into chocolate and eaten by Super Buu, and finally the fourth time by C-17 by refusing to let C-18 leave with him. 💀
- Krilin officially holds first place on the podium in terms of deaths in Dragon Ball, with 4 deaths, while Goku died only 3 times.
- His daughter Marron is named after her ex. 👼
