I am aware of what eternity is. Eternity is a feeling peculiar to humanity. Only human feelings remain forever… and are eternal. Kagaya Ubuyashiki to Muzan Kibutsuji in UndyingKagaya
Kagaya Ubuyashiki (産うぶ屋や敷しき 耀かが哉や Ubuyashiki Kagaya?) is an important secondary character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He holds the position of 97th leader of the Demon Slayer Corps[2], and is primarily known as Oyakata-sama (お館やかた様さま? literally “Master”) by his subordinates and peers. He is also the head of the Ubuyashiki family.
Appearance
Kagaya has fair skin and long black hair that falls to his shoulders. He bears a curse mark that slowly consumes him, giving the impression that his skin is decomposing. This mark extends across his face and covers his eyes, preventing him from seeing. When Kagaya died, Muzan described him as having the smile of a Buddha.
In general, he wears a black kimono accompanied by a long white haori adorned with a pink and purple pattern that begins at the small of his back and extends to his waist.

Personality
Kagaya behaves calmly and shows genuine benevolence towards members of the Demon Slayers, even regarding them as his own children. He readily accepts criticism and is honest about his own weaknesses, including his inability to become a Demon Hunter himself despite his role as senior leader. To compensate for this, he remembers each corps member and visits them daily in their graveyard, until the curse prevents him from moving.
Although he may seem indulgent, Kagaya is reasonable and unprejudiced, as evidenced by his decision to accept Tanjiro and Nezuko’s situation (following a letter from Sakonji Urokodaki) and even champion their cause when others disagreed. His way of expressing himself, though generally fluid and gentle, is extremely subtle; he uses words and intonations to capture the attention of his interlocutor. His tactful, charismatic speech is even capable of making initially passive people like Muichiro Tokito or impulsive ones like Sanemi Shinazugawa listen attentively to his words without being irritated or upset.
.With members of his own family, whom he regards as his children, Kagaya is rather strict because of the curse on them. However, he retains the same benevolent aura and adopts a gentle demeanor towards them.
History
Kagaya rose to the position of head of the Demon Slayer Corps at the age of just 4. At the age of 13, he met Amane for the first time, when she was 17. She was specifically selected by a priest to become Kagaya’s wife and take care of his medical needs, but he only agreed to the marriage on condition that she voluntarily commit to taking care of him.
Abilities
Supernatural abilities
Soothing voice: Kagaya has the ability to soothe others just with the tone of his voice and the rhythm of his actions, as he demonstrated with Tanjiro Kamado and the Hashira.
Foresight: In addition to his distinctive voice, Kagaya (along with the rest of the Ubuyashiki family) possesses a high sense of foresight that enables them to avoid disastrous situations and has enabled them to accumulate great wealth and fortune. Thanks to this instinct, Kagaya has made several precise predictions about various events that have proved accurate, without any prior knowledge. For example, he accurately predicted that Muzan’s only remaining weakness was the sun, and that it could not be destroyed by decapitation. He also predicted that the death of Gyutaro and Daki would cause upheaval, resulting in the loss of members among the higher ranks of the Twelve Kizuki for the first time in hundreds of years. Finally, Kagaya predicted that Muzan would find him and trigger the final war between the Demon Slayer Corps and the Twelve Kizuki during the last five days of his life.
Triviality
- Kagaya shares the same Japanese and English dubbers as Sword Art Online’s Seijiro Kikuoka.
- Kagaya’s Japanese double, Toshiyuki Morikawa, is also the one who lends his voice to the main antagonist Naraku in the Inuyasha series. Ironically, in a way, Naraku can be seen as a parallel version of Muzan (both are manipulative and strive for “perfection”).
- As Kagaya explains, the illness he’s currently suffering from is the curse on his family for giving birth to the “Original Demon”. This disease is a genetic disorder passed down from generation to generation within their family, resulting in weakened bodies and a life expectancy of less than 30 years for the Ubuyashiki family.
- His first name contains the kanji for “Shine” (耀 Kagaya) and “How” (哉 Ya), where the “Ya” in 耀 is replaced by the kanji 哉. His surname contains the kanji for “Bear” (産 Ubu), “House” (屋 Ya) and “Spread” (敷 Shiki).
Quotes
- (To Tengen Uzui) “Tengen, the path you’ve chosen is difficult. It’s hard to reject the values you learned as a child. You must constantly fight against yourself, while battling on the battlefield. But despite your many inner conflicts and contradictions… I trust you will always fight for me and protect innocent lives. Thank you, Tengen, you’re a wonderful child.”
- (To Mitsuri Kanroji) “Mitsuri, you are especially dear in the eyes of the gods. Be proud of your strength. Those who speak ill of you fear your talent and are simply envious!”
- (To Sanemi Shinazugawa) “I’m sorry. I tried to wield the sword, but my heart was pounding and I couldn’t even do it ten times. I would have been like you if I’d been able to. I wanted to be a powerful swordsman and protect the lives of others with my own body. But… it was impossible for me. I apologize for asking you to perform such difficult tasks […] If you are pawns… then I am also a piece to be sacrificed. And even if just one piece, even a piece like me, who moves the Demon Slayer Corps, were to die, nothing would change. This is the first time you’ve attended a Hashira meeting, so I understand if you misunderstand me. I’m not putting myself above you or anything. But that’s how everyone treats me. If it bothers you, you don’t have to do it. Instead of worrying about it, defend the lives of others as Hashira. That’s my only request.”
- (To Sanemi Shinazugawa about Masachika Kumeno) “Sanemi… all the children of the Demon Slayer Corps write their own wills. Strangely enough, the content of these wills is often similar. Masachika’s was the same. I thought I’d give it to you. Masachika saw you as the younger brother he’d lost. He dreamed of a bright future, just as I did. A wish for loved ones to smile. That they live happily ever after and never see their lives cruelly threatened. Even if we can’t be there for them. We want them to live. We want them to survive.”
- (To Muichiro Tokito) “You mustn’t be rigid in your thinking, Muichiro. When you regain your self-confidence, you’ll become stronger.”
- (To Muzan Kibutsuji) “And it’s because… I burn to defeat you, Muzan.”
