The Titans’ attack on Shiganshina marked the devastating and deadly start of the “Attack of the Titans” series. Could a proper plan have saved more lives?
The initial assault at Shiganshina was one of the most violent moments in “Attack of the Titans”. It set the tone for the rest of the series and gave Eren the motivation he needed to swear vengeance against those who had destroyed his home, whether pure Titans or members of Mahr.
Thanks to recent technological advances and better planning, there are now many ways to survive a Titan attack. By identifying them, we can better understand which actions are crucial if we find ourselves in a situation similar to that of Eren and his friends.

Three-dimensional equipment is the simplest way to ensure survival.
The three-dimensional maneuvering device gives its user the ability to cling to nearby surfaces and propel themselves in any direction. Soldiers used it primarily to shoot down Titans and make daring escapes when necessary.
Given that Shiganshina has hundreds of buildings offering multiple hang points, this equipment would have been extremely useful during the first invasion of the pure Titans. Unfortunately, the Garrison unit was unprepared for such an attack, so the use of this equipment to repel the invaders was rare.
It’s advisable to run the second the colossal titan appears.
Before Shiganshina was driven in, a gigantic bolt of lightning lit up the sky, accompanied by fingers stretching along the walls. Instead of fleeing in the face of these sinister omens, most of the neighborhood was captivated by curiosity or fear.
If someone rushed to the door immediately after Bertholdt’s initial transformation, they’d have a much better chance of escaping through it or reaching the evacuation boat. What’s more, they’d be out of range of the debris thrown up by the Colossal’s powerful kick.
Traveling in crowds is a surprisingly effective way to avoid being eaten.
If you don’t immediately flee as soon as the Colossal appears, moving in a group is another effective way to increase your chances of survival. While this may attract a greater number of pure Titans, it also offers increased safety through numbers.
As Titans tend to choose a specific target and devour it, the chances of being caught within a group are relatively low. However, it’s best to stay at the head of the group to avoid being slowed down.
Living near the Maria Wall is a smart precaution to take.
Given that the Titans have been laying siege to Paradise for more than a century, it would be wise to take the precaution of setting up as close as possible to the Maria Wall so as to be able to escape quickly in the event of Shiganshina’s collapse.
Assuming that the door closed late, someone near the entrance would have plenty of time to flee long before most of his compatriots. This would guarantee an uneventful and less traumatic escape during one of the most horrific events in anime history.
It’s possible to bribe the Special Brigade in order to get over the wall first.
The Special Brigade is infamous for its corruption, having shown a willingness to sell its own supplies for financial gain and declare them “lost”. If one has the foresight to pay them during the Shiganshina assault, it is possible to obtain special equipment to protect oneself.
This would allow those fortunate enough to cross the Maria Wall before Reiner went on the rampage, or simply to have immediate access to the evacuation shuttle. In either case, friends in high places would grant special privileges for the right price.
Being a Primordial Titan would make survival easy.
Possessing the power of a Primordial Titan would greatly increase the chances of escape. If Eren had used the Titan Assassin earlier, he could have taken out several pure Titans, even with relatively limited combat experience.
In reality, even the weakest of the nine Primordial Titans would have ensured the escape. For example, the Titan Charrette could have carried a dozen civilians on its back to safety.
Lying down inside a building would provide temporary security against the Titans’ attack.
When the pure Titans arrived, they didn’t blindly destroy buildings. From time to time, they peeked inside to spot the presence of humans, but they didn’t pay much attention to the houses.
By identifying the proximity of a Titan by the sound of its heavy footsteps and hiding under a table or near a window, it was possible to avoid the imposing pursuers while devising a plan to escape behind the Maria Wall. The only drawback to this strategy was that it might delay the arrival of the refugee boat, but that was always preferable to being devoured immediately.
Shiganshina’s cannons should have been posted in a more strategic location
Although Paradis is at a disadvantage against the pure Titans, it is not defenseless. Dozens of cannons have been transported in a vain attempt to prevent Reiner from destroying the Maria Wall.
If this artillery had been deployed on the breach created by Bertholt, Shiganshina’s defenders would have met with much greater success against the invading pure Titans. Given that there was only one opening the giants could create, they would have been slaughtered as quickly as they had entered the city. Although Reiner was able to neutralize the cannons after understanding his enemies’ strategy, it would nevertheless have bought the civilians precious time to escape.
Thunder spears would have been excellent against pure Titans.
Although lightning spears weren’t invented when the Titans invaded, it would have been reasonable to do so. Paradis had over a century to conduct experiments on pure Titans and refine a technology capable of defeating them.
If the Garrison unit had been equipped with these weapons, they would have been able to project deadly explosive projectiles at the giants that would have made up for their lack of experience in using three-dimensional equipment and in close combat.
It is still possible to jump onto the rescue boat after it has reached full capacity.
As the refugee ship set sail, Shiganshina soldiers made desperate efforts to hold back the Eldians left behind. However, a number managed to break through the makeshift barrier and jump over the bulwark, managing to join the other fugitives on board.
This is one of the few cases in the series where characters in the background have gone to great lengths to ensure their own survival.
