Information about Gyomei Himejima
The current Stone Hashira is considered the most powerful among them. Gyōmei, a man of gigantic stature, was once a monk who cared for orphaned children. After these children were murdered and he was accused of the crime, despite having protected them from a demon, he became more ruthless while remaining caring. At first, he felt pity for Tanjiro because of Nezuko, who was a demon, but he later recognizes his honesty. He is the only Hashira not to use a sword, fighting instead with a huge metal ball chained with spikes, which he can wield with ease thanks to his impressive size and strength. He loses a leg in the final battle against Muzan before succumbing to his wounds.

History of Gyomei Himejima
Before becoming a demon slayer and pillar, Gyomei lived with nine other orphaned children whom he raised in a temple. The area was notorious for demon attacks, so Gyomei always burned wisteria incense to ward off demons that might harm him and the children.
One night, one of the nine children disobeyed the temple rules and came into contact with a demon. To save his own life, he suggested that the demon eat the other children, including Gyomei. At dusk, the child invited the demon into the temple by extinguishing the wisteria incense.
Four children were immediately killed by the demon, and the remaining children insisted on escaping the temple, ignoring Gyomei’s orders. His weak stature and blindness fueled the children’s distrust of Gyomei’s ability to protect them, leading them to abandon him and be killed by the demon.
Finally, only one child, the youngest named Sayo, listened and stayed behind, fearing the demon.
Although it’s unclear how the exchange went down, Gyomei was wounded in the forehead by the demon, but he quickly turned the tables and began ruthlessly attacking the demon when he realized he possessed “a frightening amount of power”. He continued to bash the demon’s head until sunrise.
Shortly afterwards, people arrived on the scene to help, but due to a misunderstanding with Sayo, they declared, “This man is a monster. He killed them.” The villagers thought she was talking about Gyomei and not the demon.
He was then imprisoned and charged with the murder of the seven children, but Kagaya Ubuyashiki, aka “Oyakata-sama”, intervened and he was released before being executed for crimes he had not committed.
Later, Gyomei became a demon slayer, then eventually the Stone Pillar.
Personality of Gyomei Himejima
Gyomei represents the archetypal gentle giant, being surprisingly gentle and sensitive despite his intimidating appearance. He displays great piety, wearing his prayer beads at all times and offering prayers at emotional moments.
Although rather reserved, Gyomei has a very objective and somewhat distrustful view of the people around him, due to the experiences he had before becoming a demon slayer. He is always aware of the abilities of others, especially children or younger people, if given a chance. Because of his distrustful nature, Gyomei can be slow to accept and trust others. But once he opens up and lets others in, he’s unwavering in his commitment to them.
Powers and abilities of Gyomei Himejima
As Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Gyomei is a swordsman of considerable power. Tanjiro and Inosuke Hashibira consider him the greatest demon slayer in the entire corps. This opinion is also confirmed by Kokushibo, the first superior rank, who acknowledges that Gyomei’s natural physical abilities have been pushed to the limit. He also affirms that in the last three centuries, he has not met a warrior as talented as Gyomei. The latter was able to fight against the most powerful of the higher ranks for a short period of time without using his demon-killing mark, further testament to the breadth of his skills.
Gyomei Himejima’s natural abilities
Sword Master: As Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Gyomei is one of the most powerful and skilled swordsmen in the entire organization.
Colossal strength: Gyomei possesses immense physical strength, as evidenced by his ability to move a huge boulder, much larger than himself, through a city. Thanks to “repetitive actions”, he is able to execute a series of predetermined movements to maximize his concentration. Even before becoming a demon slayer, Gyomei had incredible strength despite his small stature when he discovered his abilities.
Remarkable reflexes: during their fight, Kokushibo noticed that despite Gyomei’s large stature, he possessed extremely fast and sharp reflexes, allowing him to move easily around his opponent to avoid all attacks. The senior officer even found his ease and grace of movement almost unbelievable.
Exceptional stamina: Gyomei possesses immense physical stamina, able to withstand multiple attacks from Kokushibo, the highest-ranking senior, sustaining only minor injuries while continuing to fight.
Improved hearing: Because of his blindness, Gyomei has effectively developed a superhuman sense of hearing to compensate for his condition. He is able to hear the sound of Muzan Kibutsuji’s flesh regeneration during their brief confrontation. Later, during his fight against the top Rank 1, Kokushibo, Gyomei uses the sound of the chains to accurately determine their position and uses them as a guide to wield his axe and flail during the fight.
Nichirin’s crimson-red blade: during the battle against Kokushibo, Sanemi strikes Gyomei’s spiked flail with his sword, causing them to briefly turn red. Later, in the battle against Muzan, Gyomei is able to turn his spiked flail and axe red by striking them together.
Mark of the Demon Slayer: Later, during his confrontation with Top Rank 1, Gyomei shows that he has also awakened his mark. This manifests itself in the form of cracks in the earth, like patterns on both his forearms. When activated, the mark greatly enhances his physical and mental abilities, enabling him to fight Superior Rank 1 for a long period of time.
A transparent world: A unique perspective on the world. Despite being blind, Gyomei has acquired the ability to visualize a perfect image of his enemies in his mind and feel them naturally.
The art of the sword
Singular weapon: Gyomei wields a swinging, whipping weapon similar to a kusarigama, consisting of an axe attached to a spiked flail by a long chain. To compensate for his lack of vision, Gyomei uses the sound of the chain to guide the movements of the axe and flail, enabling him to wield his weapon effectively. This weapon was forged from the same metals used to create Nichirin blades. Its manufacture enjoys an exceptional reputation, considered to be of superior quality to swords forged during the Sengoku period, the heyday of sword forging. Even the top Rank 1, Kokushibo, couldn’t cut the chain and was forced to resort to close combat.
Stone breathing:
First form: Bipolar Serpentinite – Gyomei projects both flail and axe at his target, manipulating the chain to spin them and make them pierce and slice through his target.
Second form: Superior strike – Gyomei throws his axe and spiked flail in a pincer movement, then crushes the chain so that the flail bounces back and crushes his target from a distance.
Third form: Stone Skin – Gyomei performs a series of axe strikes, spinning it around him, to deflect attacks from all directions.
Fourth form: Volcanic Rock – Rapid Conquest – Gyomei wields both flail and axe at the ends of the chain, swinging the chain to either side to strike opponents from great distances with a double-pronged attack.
Fifth form: Bows of Justice – Gyomei assails his opponent with a simultaneous barrage of axe and metal ball blows.
