Hyo hyo! What a childish provocation! Do you really think I, Gyokko, would be intimidated by such nonsense? You seem desperate. It’s pitiful.
Gyokko to Muichiro Tokito in Exchanging Insults

Gyokko
Gyokko (玉ぎょ壼っこ Gyokko?) and Hantengu are the main antagonists in Demon Slayer’s Swordsmen Village arc: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a demon affiliated with the Twelve Kizuki and occupies top rank five (上じょう弦げんの伍ご Jōgen no Go?).

Before becoming a demon, he was a human being named Managi (益ま魚な儀ぎ Managi?).

Appearance

Gyokko has a particularly strange physiology, taking the form of a pale white humanoid figure, abstract and grotesque, with an upper armless muscular torso resembling an armless statue emerging from a porcelain vase, almost like a djinn.
He has several childlike hands lining his back. Gyokko’s face is even more distorted. Large green mouths replace his eyes, and his real eyes are arranged vertically on his face; one eye is in the mouth that’s constantly open at the bottom, and the other is in the center of his forehead. The kanji for “High Rank” (上じょう弦げん Jōgen?) is engraved on his forehead eye, and the kanji for “Five” (伍ご Go?) is engraved on his mouth eye.

Gyokko
In an emergency, Gyokko can molt and transform into his true form, which closely resembles that of a man. In this state, Gyokko retains his facial features and muscular physique, but his body becomes more humanoid and is covered with transparent fish-like scales. Gyokko also has longer hair, black markings on various parts of his body, webbed hands and a long snake-like tail instead of legs.

Personality

Gyokko is described as short-tempered, shallow and arrogant, especially when it comes to his “art”, as can be seen when he gets upset after Muichiro starts insulting and mocking the quality of his art. In his conversation with the Hashira, he constantly boasts that he is “beautiful”, and his work is even more beautiful, reinforcing his arrogant, narcissistic personality. His arrogance is particularly evident after being beheaded by Muichiro Tokito, calling the Hashira of the Mists an inferior life form while considering himself beautiful and chosen.

Gyokko
He also proves extremely petty and jealous, as can be seen when he attacks and maims Hotaru Haganezuka out of jealousy of the latter’s concentration and dedication to his work, thus exceeding his own zeal when it comes to his own art and seeking to disrupt Hotaru’s concentration on the swordsman because of this jealous pettiness.

He also shows himself to be incredibly morbid, as when Doma tells him that he has placed a human head at the top of his pots like a plant, Gyokko immediately sees this as further inspiration for his “art”. The extent of this morbid and violent inspiration for his “art” is even more evident when he brutally murders several swordsmen and uses their corpses to create a “beautiful” piece by sewing their bodies together and stabbing several swords into them. This extreme sadism is even more evident when he considers the possibility of the swordsmen screaming as the swords are driven deeper into his “work of art”, implying that they were still alive.

History

Gyokko, formerly known as Managi, lived on the outskirts of a fishing village near the coast, but was disliked for his strange behavior, such as repeatedly picking up fish carcasses. He had lost his parents at a young age when they went fishing and never returned, their drowned bodies having been found badly damaged. The villagers considered him mad, and he seemed to be fascinated by the beauty of his parents’ drowned bodies. Some time later, Gyokko killed a village child who was teasing him and placed his body in a jar. Angered, the child’s parents stabbed him with a two-pronged fishing fork. Left for dead, Gyokko crossed paths with Muzan Kibutsuji, who turned him into a demon.
After becoming a demon, he developed a taste for humans, especially children. He modified his body at will and continued to live, mocking all living beings.

Synopsis

Arc of the entertainment district

Summoned to a meeting of the High Ranks, Gyokko greets Akaza and asks how he’s doing after ninety years, barely concealing his disappointment that his colleague has survived so long. The Potted Demon also greets Doma and exchanges a few words about the pot he gave his High Rank colleague. Shortly afterwards, Gyokko listens to Muzan Kibutsuji inform the group of Gyutaro’s death and reproach them for their uselessness. The High Rank informs his leader that he has information that could bring him closer to his objectives, but he is beheaded because the information is not confirmed. He is then ordered to join Hantengu once he has corrected his mistake, leaving him perplexed. The Potted Demon is then approached by Doma, who asks what information he has and if he can accompany him, and is shocked when Akaza destroys Doma’s head from behind.

Gyokko
He sees Kokushibo cut off Akaza’s hand and asks the Biwa Demon to transport him and Hantengu to their destination.

Arc of the swordsmen’s village

In the swordsmen’s village, Gyokko devours an unsuspecting villager and immediately spits him out, declaring him inedible. He then remarks that the destruction of the swordsmen’s village will considerably weaken the demon slayers.
When Muichiro Tokito and the two villagers enter the shed in search of a new sword, Gyokko ambushes them from a ceramic pot. He introduces himself and asks Muichiro if he would like to see his art. He then presents “Death Throes of the Smiths”, a morbid work composed of several swordsmen’s bodies sewn together with swords sticking out.

When attacked by Muichiro, he takes refuge in his ceramic pot and reveals that he can move from one pot to another at will. He explains that the pots are his pride and joy, and he becomes very upset when they are damaged. He then summons numerous fish into a pot and uses his blood demon technique: Thousand Needle Fish Kill to attack Muichiro, who allows himself to be hit. Gyokko wonders which technique he should use against Muichiro, but Tokito reprimands him, telling him he’s no good. Upset again, he traps Muichiro with his Water Prison Pot technique, commenting that death by suffocation is “elegant and beautiful”.

Gyokko
As Muichiro struggles to escape from the Water Prison Jar, Gyokko advances towards the warehouse. He enters and sees Hotaru Haganezuka working on the blade extracted from the training doll. Hotaru doesn’t notice Gyokko’s entrance behind him, which enrages Gyokko at the thought of another artist being more focused on his art than he is. He summons a fish to attack Hotaru, shattering the swordsman’s mask but failing to break his concentration. Hotaru’s dedication to the blade prompts Gyokko to force him to lose his concentration rather than kill him outright.

Gyokko
Muichiro manages to escape from the Water Prison Pot with Kotetsu’s help, which surprises Gyokko and prompts him to unleash his Octopus Vase Hell technique. Muichiro’s Sea of Clouds and Haze technique hits Gyokko, who takes refuge again in his pot and reappears in another pot. He argues with Muichiro about the beauty of his pots, becoming furious after an insult to their balance, and unleashes his Ten Thousand Slippery Mosquito Fish technique. After Muichiro successfully deflects two of his attacks, Gyokko reveals his true form and becomes more determined to kill him. His true form enables him to turn everything he touches into a fish, giving him increased speed and strength. Muichiro then uses Obscuring Clouds to decapitate Gyokko, which deeply disorients him.

Abilities

General abilities : As the fifth-highest member of the Twelve Kizuki, Gyokko is an extremely powerful demon. His unique blood-demon techniques allow him to easily surpass ordinary demons and possess the edge needed to crush and kill even the Hashira, the most skilled and powerful swordsmen in the Demon Slaying Corps. As Rank Five Superior, Gyokko is more powerful than Gyutaro and Daki, the former having killed 15 Hashira and the latter 7. Gyokko has demonstrated many impressive feats. Notably, during his duel with Muichiro Tokito, Gyokko managed to subdue and restrain the Hashira for much of their fight, even bringing him to the brink of death. If Gyokko hadn’t been selfish and Muichiro hadn’t awakened his demon-slaying mark, he very likely could have killed him.
Flesh manipulation: Like all demons, Gyokko possesses the ability to manipulate his own flesh to some extent. He apparently uses this ability to alter his facial features and adopt his djinn physiology. Gyokko has also shown the ability to grow numerous short arms on his head and torso, even after being decapitated.

Gyokko

Impressive stamina: As a Superior Rank, Gyokko has an extremely strong body, surpassing even Gyutaro, whose neck was almost impossible for Tanjiro Kamado to slice. His durability is further enhanced when he molts, his skin being covered with thick, hard scales reputed to be stronger than diamond, making him extremely tough.

Gyokko

Powerful regeneration: Thanks to his superior demon rank, Gyokko possesses advanced regeneration ability. This was demonstrated when he survived decapitation inflicted by Muzan Kibutsuji and quickly closed his wound to put his head back on. What’s more, Gyokko is able to quickly heal wounds caused by Nichirin swords without major difficulty.

Amazing speed and reflexes: Gyokko is incredibly fast, as evidenced by his ease in dodging Muichiro’s attacks and unleashing techniques that the Hashira of the Mists has trouble dodging. What’s more, Gyokko managed to react to a surprise attack by Muichiro that had awakened his Mark of the Demon Slayer, suggesting a considerable amplification of his movement speed. Despite this, Gyokko managed to keep the marked Hashira at bay for an extended period, even moving with such speed that he gave the impression of teleporting, and briefly overpowered Muichiro thanks to his sheer speed.

Shedding transformation: In an emergency, Gyokko can shed her skin and transform into her true form, strengthening all her abilities and freeing herself from her vase, allowing her to move freely without the need to teleport. His true body is also extremely resistant, the scales covering it being harder than diamond, as the Superior Rank noticed. What’s more, anything Gyokko touches turns into a fish, making him extremely dangerous in close combat.

Talented artist: Because of his obsession with pots, Gyokko became a talented painter and maker. His pots have attracted the attention of Muzan, who even sells them at a premium price, suggesting incredible skill and craftsmanship in their design and execution.

Unlimited stamina and endurance: Like all demons, Gyokko possesses infinite stamina and endurance. This was demonstrated when he was decapitated by Muzan without showing the slightest sign of pain, but rather commenting on how good it felt. What’s more, Gyokko claimed that having his neck sliced by a sword was magnificent.

Fighting style

Art of the bloody demon

China vases: Gyokko’s bloody demon art centers on his porcelain vases. He is apparently able to make them appear anywhere in his environment and to create several pots of different sizes simultaneously. Gyokko first demonstrates his ability to move instantly from one pot to another, compensating for his lack of legs and enabling him to cover long distances with little effort and easily dodge attacks. He can also trap objects, or even people, in his pots. If the object he wishes to seal is too large, the pots can simply compress it to fit inside. The jars also seem to give Gyokko the freedom to control what’s inside, which he uses to fuse swordsmen in impossible ways and create whatever he wishes inside.
Gyokko in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
At the start of the Swordsmen Village arc, Gyokko conjures up numerous monstrous fish-like creatures to terrorize the village and kill its inhabitants. These creatures are invulnerable to normal means and can only be killed when the pots on their backs are destroyed. Each creature possesses unique traits and characteristics, such as sharp claws, multiple humanoid legs or monstrous teeth. Although these amalgams can kill the demon slayers charged with protecting the village, their strength is nowhere near that of the Hashira, as Mitsuri and Muichiro have demonstrated by easily overpowering them.

Description

  • Thousand Needle Fish Kill (千本針魚殺 Senbonbari Gyosatsu): Gyokko summons floating demon fish from her pots, which fire a barrage of poisoned needles. The poison has paralyzing properties that immobilize the target.
  • Water prison pot (水獄鉢 Suigokubachi): Gyokko creates a slime structure of water that imprisons the target. The water suffocates the target and prevents it from using breathing techniques, making it difficult to free and escape.
  • Octopus Vase Hell (蛸壺地獄 Takotsubo Jigoku): Gyokko conjures giant tentacles from his pots to restrain his targets. These tentacles are powerful enough to destroy a hangar and are renowned for their extreme strength.
  • Ten thousand slippery shuttlefish (一万滑空粘魚 Ichiman Kakkūnengyo): Gyokko summons a total of ten thousand shuttlefish from several pots to attack his target and devour it, leaving only bones behind. When these fish are sliced, their severed parts release a poisonous liquid before turning to dust. This poison is also percutaneous, meaning it can be absorbed through the skin. Once the poison has been absorbed, the target is likely to die.
  • Killer Fish Scales (陣殺魚鱗 Jinsatsu Gyorin): In his true form, Gyokko unleashes a series of physical attacks with immense speed. This technique is powerful enough to decimate surrounding trees.
