🚨 Warning! The following lines contain spoilers about chapter 68 of Dragon Ball Super, by Akira Toriyama.

WHO IS GRANOLA IN DRAGON BALL SUPER?

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
Granola (グ ラ ノ ラ Guranora) is the sole survivor of the Cerealian race, decimated by the Saiyan army. Driven by a desire for revenge, he seeks to obtain more power in order to kill the tyrant Freezer and thus avenge his people. 🎑

Granola is a rigorous and serious individual. He nurtures a deep love for his people and is constantly haunted by the memory of the arrival of the Force Freezer and the Saiyans transforming into giant Oozaru, destroying his city. This engendered a deep hatred of Freezer and the Saiyans, who invaded his home planet and exterminated his people. 🌍

After their decimation, Granola harbored a vengeful obsession towards his fallen brothers. However, when he learned of the destruction of Planet Vegeta and the death of Freezer, Granola almost abandoned his quest for vengeance. His determination was rekindled when he learned of Freezer’s resurrection, as this offered him the opportunity to kill him and avenge his people. As soon as he learned of Freezer’s resurrection, he immediately asked Elec to reveal his location so he could kill him on the spot. 💥

DRAAGON BALL SUPER MANGA EVOLUTION

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
Appearing for the first time in chapter 67 of Dragon Ball Super, Granola makes a dramatic entrance into the manga by eliminating a team of Seventhree clones. However, this introduction raises a number of questions about this character’s motivations and his desire to take over the body of OG73-I, who was working with the evil Moro. The answers to these questions are soon revealed, however, as chapter 68 of Dragon Ball Super reveals Granola’s past and sets him on an explosive course with Goku, Vegeta and the recently resurrected Freezer. ⚡

Chapter 68 of Dragon Ball Super begins with the destruction of Granola’s people, the Cerealans, by an army of Saiyans in their Oozaru form, a recurring nightmare for the fighter. Granola laments to his computer, Oatmeel, about his inability to take revenge on those who destroyed his people, believing that Freezer and the Saiyans are gone. Freezer’s exploits since his resurrection at the end of the Survival of the Universe Saga seem never to have reached Granola, who seems even unaware of Goku and Vegeta’s existence. 😲

But all that is about to change. Granola soon reaches the gang’s hideout, where he hands over Seventhree’s body in exchange for a bounty. The gang’s leader, Elec, then reveals to him that Freezer is indeed alive, prompting Granola to find out more so he can exact his revenge on the monster. Granola becomes aggressive, and a gang member named Gas easily eliminates the young fighter. So Granola sets out on a quest to find Freezer. However, angering Granola was part of Elec’s plan, as he wanted Freezer to kill the fighter before he became more powerful than Gas, thus creating problems within the gang. 👊🏻

GRANOLA IN SEARCH OF FREEZER

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
In space, Granola is ambushed by a mercenary named Soshiru and his group of allies. They hope to rob him of the bounty he has just won for Seventhree’s body. However, Granola is not one to give in easily. He traps Soshiru and his allies in his ship and begins to eliminate them from a distance, revealing that the Cerealians are expert marksmen. 🎯

After this battle, Granola realizes that he is not yet in a position to defeat Freezer, and so vows to become the strongest fighter in the universe. Immediately after making this vow, Chapter 68 of Dragon Ball Super focuses on the Oracle Fish on the planet of Beerus, prophesying, “Universe 7… balance… changing… the strongest warrior in the universe… will soon rise.” 🔮

The setting up of Oracle Fish’s prophecy in chapter 68 of Dragon Ball Super suggests that Granola will soon become the most powerful fighter in the universe. How he will achieve this level of power, however, remains unclear. Even though Granola has proven to be formidable, it’s unlikely that he’ll be on the level of someone like Goku, who can now use Ultra Instinct on a regular basis.

That said, the Dragon Ball universe abounds with infinite possibilities, including magical crystal balls capable of granting any wish. It’s therefore highly likely that Granola will have to resort to devious means to take revenge on Freezer and perhaps even the last members of the Saiyan race who destroyed his people. 👊🏻

GRANOLA’S POWERS REVEALED!

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball Super also revealed Granola’s special powers in this new chapter of the series! The previous chapter concluded the Galactic Patrol arc, but rather than bring everything to a definitive close, the Dragon Ball manga chose to tease the next major arc in the series with our mysterious warrior. In this final chapter, some of Granola’s abilities are revealed, including his eye which allows him to shoot at targets at long range. By luring a group of bounty hunters into a trap, he eliminates them from a distance. Cerealians possess great marksmanship, and it is suggested that Granola is the best of his breed. He also has a “stun gun”type ki laser, which he can increase in intensity. But most importantly, he hints that he’s about to get a whole lot more powerful.

The Greatest Warrior Prophecy

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
According to several magazines, this mysterious warrior would be able to surpass Goku’s abilities and powers, meaning he would effectively become the most powerful in the universe. No one really knows who this mysterious figure is or what the prophecy means exactly, but it sparks many theories:

  • The first theory concerns Bra. Bulma and Vegeta’s daughter was born in the middle of the Dragon Ball Super series, making her a possible candidate to be the one the prophecy speaks of. As Oracle Fish put it, any warrior could “literally give birth to this arc”.
  • The second theory is more metaphorical, looking at birth from another angle. A warrior can be born at any time, especially when the situation demands it. 👶🏻
  • Therefore, the prophecy might not literally refer to a newborn, but to someone reborn as a warrior. This remains rather vague. It could even refer to Goku, who could acquire a new power and thus give birth to a new ability. 🔥

WILL Goku HAVE TO AFFORD BARDOCK’S LEGACY?

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
This new arc, “Granola The Survivor”, in Dragon Ball Super is getting more and more interesting. This latest chapter has revealed important details about the past of the new character, Granola, and her connection to the android Seventhree from the Moro arc. As previously mentioned, it turns out that Granola comes from a race called the Cerealans, who were wiped out by “barbarian apes” under the command of King Freezer. It’s obvious that Granola harbors a deep grudge against the Saiyans, and in particular against our beloved Goku. Glimpses of a Granola flashback even reveal that Bardock attacked Granola’s home and probably killed his family. 👨‍👨‍👦‍👦💥

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Dragon Ball franchise has been Goku’s total disinterest in his Saiyan heritage and lineage. In the official Dragon Ball story, Goku never really made much effort to investigate his father Bardock and mother Gine, nor to pay tribute to their memory as warriors. In fact, it wasn’t until the recent Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie that we heard Goku utter his real Saiyan name, Kakarot. 😲

However, Dragon Ball Super: Broly brought many elements to the series to link Goku to Bardock. The film retold the entire story of the destruction of Planet Vegeta and Bardock’s role in that event. This updated narrative presented Bardock as a much more sympathetic anti-hero, who cared about his wife and sons, giving Goku a Superman-like origin, while Bardock sent his baby to a world where his Saiyan power would remain hidden. More importantly, Bardock finally stood up to Freezer and led the final battle against the king’s annihilation attack. It was a heroic moment, but does it erase a history of murder and destruction across the universe?

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
That’s the question Dragon Ball Super will hopefully face with Goku in this new arc, Granola The Survivor. Goku’s refusal to confront his own problems and family roots is likely to backfire, and we hope that Akira Toriyama and Toyotaro will open up new dimensions to the character, beyond the simple quest to become stronger. It will be interesting to see if this confrontation leads Goku to re-evaluate the legacy of pain left by the Saiyans, and what he may need to do about it. 👊🏻

PROMISES BY TORIYAMA AND TOYOTARO

Granola - Dragon Ball Super
Twitter user Dragon Ball Hype shared a clip of Toyotaro, the current super artist, showing just how involved the creator of the Goku and Z-Fighters story is in the next arc, which will introduce a whole new narrative after the defeat of Moro and his clan :

Toyotaro mentioned that Toriyama had provided a draft for the next story arc, which will be filled with “twists and revelations”, showing that the Dragon Ball creator still has ideas about the direction of the series as we follow Goku on his quest to fight against increasingly difficult and powerful enemies. Needless to say, the stakes will have to be considerably high given Moro’s resistance and the new villains to come! 👊🏻
