Information about Genya Shinazugawa

Genya Shinazugawa is a demon hunter who joins Tanjiro and Zenitsu. Genya Shinazugawa, also known as Shinazugawa Gen’ya, is a rough, uncouth individual obsessed with killing demons. His personality later changes after he fights alongside Tanjiro to save the village from hidden swordsmen. Unlike most other demon hunters, he can’t use breath or most sword fighting styles. Instead, he consumes part of the demons he faces and, thanks to his special digestive system, temporarily acquires demonic powers. The strength of his powers depends on the strength and quantity of the demon he consumes. When he eats part of a demon, he also becomes sensitive to its weaknesses. He also carries a pistol that fires specialized bullets made from the same material as the Nichirin swords of demon hunters. He is the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, who is currently the Hashira of the Wind. Sanemi always avoids Genya, unaware that his older brother wants him to lead a normal life. Genya is mortally wounded when he assists Sanemi in his fight against Kokushibo, and reconciles with his brother before dying.

History of Genya Shinazugawa

Genya was part of a family of nine, with a hard-working mother who never slept and a father who was a deadbeat and occasionally beat his wife despite her weak constitution, as well as their children.

Later, Sanemi learned that their father had been stabbed to death. Sanemi and Genya then vowed to protect their siblings as well as their mother.

One day, their mother disappeared and didn’t return before daybreak. The children, finding themselves alone and unprotected, began to feel suspicion and worry. They heard a loud rattling noise coming from their door, thinking it was their mother, but it was actually a demon who immediately killed five of the seven children and wounded Genya.

Before Genya had a chance to escape, the demon approached him, but Sanemi intervened and fought with the demon, telling Genya to “run away!”

Shortly afterwards, Genya went to find a doctor for his injured siblings, but met Sanemi on the way. Sanemi had kept the demon at bay and killed it with the help of the sun, but he was unprepared because the demon that had attacked their family was their own mother. Deeply disturbed by what had happened, Genya panicked and chose to blame Sanemi, accusing him of killing their mother, and claimed it was a wolf that had attacked the family.

Later in life, Genya realized his mistake and tried to mend his relationship with his brother. He trained to become a demon hunter, but was unable to use the breathing styles. However, he discovered that he could consume demons and acquire demonic abilities. He was discovered by the Pillar of Rock, Gyomei Himejima. As Genya couldn’t use Breaths, Gyomei didn’t choose him as his Tsuguko, but decided to train him anyway. At one point, he met Sanemi and tried to apologize, but Sanemi refused to consider him his brother, claiming he had no brother. It was then that Genya decided to become a Pillar himself in order to reconnect with his brother.

Genya Shinazugawa’s personality

Genya is a rude and ill-tempered person, a “lone wolf” who refuses help from others and shows no interest in being polite or courteous. At the final selection, he treated Kanata Ubuyashiki brutally by grabbing her by the hair and shouting at her, even though she was a child. His bad temper and insolent language are very similar to those of his older brother, Sanemi.

However, he became more open to cooperation during the battle against Hantengu, a high-ranking demon, where he worked alongside Tanjiro Kamado, Mitsuri Kanroji and Nezuko Kamado. Over time, he learned to be more sociable and less rude to others, especially Tanjiro and his friends.

Sanemi’s refusal to acknowledge Genya made him insecure, as he realized how weak he is compared to his companions. Despite this, he did all he could to help his allies, even if it hurt him badly. Despite his brother’s harsh reprimands, he holds no grudge, a conviction reinforced by Tanjiro and ultimately Sanemi himself.

Genya Shinazugawa’s abilities and powers

Demonic transformation: By consuming a demon, Genya can temporarily acquire demonic attributes. Depending on his strength, he can achieve equivalent regeneration and physical strength. In this form, Genya briefly overpowered Aizetsu. Later, after ingesting the wood created by Zouhakuten, Genya developed enough strength and speed to quickly throw three trees in succession.

Highest rank 4 Empowerment: After consuming the wood created by Zohakuten, Genya gained enough strength and speed to quickly throw three trees. In his fight against Kokushibo, the full extent of his transformation was witnessed by eating the flesh of Top Rank 4. Despite the wounds viciously inflicted by Kokushibo on his abdomen and the amputation of both his arms, Genya did not die, demonstrating that, like a true demon, he could only be killed by decapitation.

Habilitation: by consuming Kokushibo’s hair, Genya’s demonic abilities were further enhanced, as evidenced by his ability to quickly reattach his severed body in mere seconds, as well as intercept Muzan Kibutsuji’s telepathic communication. By consuming a piece of the Top Rank’s flesh sword, Genya even began to recover many of the physical characteristics of Top Rank 1, such as his eyes and hair. Later, even when his head is split in two and half is cleanly cut off, Genya is not only still alive and conscious, but also retains the strength to activate his Blood Demon Arts. However, as he succumbs to his severe wounds, Genya takes on the appearance of a true demon and disintegrates into ashes.

Flesh Gun: Genya has demonstrated the ability to detach her own cells and fuse them with her weapon. The weapon has the same characteristics as the Kokushibo sword, with several eyes on top of the barrel and a mouth, which probably increases its accuracy and power.

Demon Slayer’s Mark: Genya also obtained the higher-ranking Demon Slayer’s Mark, which manifested itself as a flame-shaped tattoo on the right side of her forehead. This probably increased all her physical and mental abilities.

Blood Demon Art: Having consumed the flesh and cells of at least two high-ranking officers (Kokushibo and Hantengu), Genya seems to have developed his own blood demon art during his fight against high-ranking officer 1. Like Nezuko’s blood demon art, Genya’s was also designed to fight and inflict damage on other demons.

Fleshballs: by fusing his demonic cells derived from consuming cells from Top Rank 1 and Top Rank 4, Genya developed a unique technique. He incorporated these demon-transformed cells into his bullets and his solar steel rifle. When firing them, he could freely manipulate the direction and speed of the bullets to easily bypass obstacles between the bullet and its target. This was observed as his bullets moved around Kokushibo’s sword, sinking directly into his flesh. Once inside the target, the bullets could instantly transform into a gigantic tree similar to those created by the tree-like creatures of the fourth-ranked Zou Hakuten. They would then wrap themselves around the target, paralyzing it.

Blood bullets: Genya could still modify her flesh bullets so that they took root in her target and sucked the demons’ blood inside their bodies. This prevented demons from being able to activate their own blood demon art.
