Floch Forster became very important in the later parts of Attack of the Titans and underwent many changes during this period.
Many characters in Attack of the Titans were introduced as members of the 104th Training Brigade. Floch Forster was part of this class in the army, having trained alongside characters such as Eren, Mikasa, Reiner and Jean, but he wasn’t seen until the end of the Major Turning Arc.
Previously, Floch was a member of the Garrison, and although he had an almost insignificant presence in the first half of the manga, he became an extremely important character towards the end by positioning himself as one of the antagonists of the Exploration Battalion and the Warrior Unit, until Eren unleashed the Great Earthworks. Here are the 10 key moments that shaped Floch’s character development up to the end of the manga, in chronological order:

10. He joined the Exploration Battalion
When Historia became Queen of Paradise, the Exploration Battalion welcomed many new members. Among them was Floch, who was excited to leave the walls and reunite with his old comrades before joining the Garrison. Given that the Exploration Battalion was the most hated military branch at the start of the series, it was surprising to see so many soldiers join them. From their first appearance in the story, Floch and the other recruits thus demonstrated just how much they had changed.
9. He followed Erwin’s orders
Despite his initial enthusiasm for joining the Exploration Battalion, Floch quickly changed his mind when the warriors attacked them at Shiganshina. He demonstrated his weakness in comparison with his companions, hesitating to follow orders and panicking in the face of the situation. When Commander Erwin asked him and the other soldiers present to sacrifice themselves to allow Levi to kill the Bestial Titan instead of waiting for them to die, Floch almost disobeyed orders. However, he eventually changed his mind and became the only surviving member of the Exploration Battalion to take part in the assault.
8. He was one of the few survivors of the Battle of Shiganshina.
Other than being the only soldier to survive the attack on the Bestial Titan, Floch is one of nine remaining members of the Exploration Battalion at the end of the battle. The other eight members are Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Levi, Hange, Jean, Connie and Sasha.
The others had already gained real combat experience and had survived many situations where they could have lost their lives. Now Floch could understand where they were coming from and be considered one of the most experienced soldiers. He was becoming a role model for the newcomers, just as Eren looked up to Levi and Erwin with admiration.
7. He tried to save Erwin’s life
After discovering that Erwin was in critical condition but still alive, Floch did everything in his power to try and save him. Knowing of the existence of the titan serum held by Levi, he was convinced that Erwin could survive if the serum were injected into him. So, he carried the commander’s body to the soldier considered to be humanity’s most powerful.
However, at that very moment, Levi had agreed to give the titan serum to Armin, who was also on the verge of death. Floch longed for Erwin to inherit the Colossal Titan, even though he thought the latter was not a good person and had been friends with Armin during their training.
6. He became Eren’s most loyal disciple.
After Armin’s rescue, Floch didn’t hesitate to voice his disagreement, claiming that Levi had made the wrong choice. This created a lot of tension between him and Eren. However, when the series jumped forward four years into the future, Floch became Eren’s most loyal disciple. He integrated many of Eren’s followers, the Jägerists, into their group. Floch also manipulated those he needed to support Eren and gave orders to the Jägerists when Eren was unable to do so.
5. He began to hide important information
In his early appearances, Floch was a no-holds-barred talker, saying whatever came into his head. However, once he became involved with Eren, he realized that divulging information to non-Jägerists would jeopardize everything he was working for. He became extremely secretive, not even allowing one of Eren’s friends to know what they were doing. This evolution is very reminiscent of Eren’s own, as at the start of the series, he also tended to say whatever he wanted without thinking about the consequences.
4. He began to celebrate his victories
Like many other soldiers transferred to the Exploration Battalion, Floch was celebrating the reconquest of the Mur Maria lands before they left on their mission. They were convinced that all would go well and that they would all return as heroes. However, on their return, Floch and the eight other survivors realized there was no reason to celebrate.
Years later, when he helped Eren attack Marley, Floch encouraged everyone to celebrate, as fewer soldiers had died. Yet none of these were really times for celebration, as they were just before or in the middle of battles where many lives were lost. However, the reason for celebrating had certainly changed for Floch.
3. He’s become very manipulative
Once the Jägerists had taken control of Paradis, Floch used manipulative strategies to try and win over those who weren’t on their side. One prominent example was when he suggested to Jean that he might eventually join the Special Brigade, the branch he had originally wanted to join when he was introduced. However, Jean has come a long way since then, and although part of him still yearns for a peaceful, quiet life, he knows he has to fight Floch and Eren.
2. He wanted to hurt anyone who didn’t agree with the Jägerists.
Floch would get physically aggressive with anyone he couldn’t handle. Keith, chief instructor of the 104th Training Brigade and former commander of the Exploration Battalion, had taught Floch and many other characters combat techniques. What he didn’t expect, however, was for one of his students to turn on him and incite the recruits to beat him up. Floch became a very violent person towards those who disagreed with Eren and didn’t join him in his fight against the rest of the world.
1. He became a great fighter
Despite his lack of skills on his first mission as a member of the Exploration Battalion, Floch became one of the most powerful characters in Paradise towards the end of the manga, and this wasn’t limited to his role as a Jägerist. When the Exploration Battalion and the Warrior Unit joined forces to pursue Eren, they had to take a ship from the Jägerists. They found themselves involved in a huge battle where they had to kill some of their old friends from the 104th Brigade, but Floch managed to survive. He slipped into the back of the boat and followed them, hanging on as long as he could. When the Exploration Battalion and Warrior Unit reached the flying boat, Floch opened fire, costing them time. However, he eventually lost his life in the process. It took them a long time to eliminate Floch, and even though he knew he was going to die, he remained loyal to Eren.
