Coyote Starrk, sometimes incorrectly spelled Coyote Stark, is an Arrancar and the Primera (1st) Espada in Sōsuke Aizen’s army, alongside his better half, Lilynette Gingerbuck. His Fracción are Filadelfo and Annalouise.

Coyote Starrk

Starrk has blue-gray eyes and wavy, dark-brown hair that reaches down to the base of his neck. He also sports a sparse goatee. His clothing is characteristic of an Arrancar. He wears a white jacket edged in black, although this has been modified with the collar turned up. A black belt, like a matador’s, is tied around his waist. He wears white gloves. The remains of his Hollow mask are in the form of a hooked lower jaw, placed along his neck like a necklace. His Hollow Hole is located on his sternum, just below the tip of his mask. His Espada tattoo is visible on the back of his left hand, which he hides with his glove.

Starrk is a lazy, lackadaisical character who seems to spend much of his time sleeping, and no one except Lilynette seems to want to stop him. In fact, he rarely speaks directly to another Arrancar, with the exception of Lilynette, his better half. Despite his high rank as Espada, he has no desire to play the role of leader, as he demonstrated when he easily let Baraggan take command during the battle in the fake city of Karakura. He shows little interest in what’s going on around him, although he is surprisingly observant and a competent analyst. Unlike many Espadas, he is neither violent nor excessively arrogant.

At first, he seems to care little for his comrades (with the exception of his Fracción), showing no visible signs of distress or concern. When he learns of Aaroniero Arruruerie’s death, he lazily declares that there’s nothing he can do about it, and when he sees that Baraggan and Harribel are apparently overwhelmed by their respective opponents’ Bankai, he simply asks Kyōraku if all the captains have such powerful Bankai. However, this indifferent attitude seems to dissipate with Baraggan’s death. Starrk comments that it’s horrible that Sōsuke Aizen doesn’t even have a word of compassion for Baraggan. This turn of events particularly affects Starrk, who loses all motivation to fight. After an argument with Lilynette, he repeats that he’s not the type to seek revenge, but his desire to protect his comrades from further death becomes motivation enough to keep fighting. Starrk seems opposed to the idea of killing people and offers Love Aikawa and Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi the chance to escape instead of finishing them off.

However, compared to the other serious members of Espada, Starrk is often presented more comically, with situations often ending in physical violence on Lilynette’s part, even if he does little to stop it. He can be serious on occasion, even if his personality doesn’t change much; he seems reluctant, but nevertheless willing to perform the tasks assigned to him. This is shown when he is ordered to retrieve Orihime Inoue, although he hates this kind of strategy. He bears similarities to Shunsui Kyōraku in his personality, which Starrk himself recognizes.

Coyote Starrk

Starrk tried to live with other Hollows, but their mere proximity to his presence caused them to lose their souls and die. Because of this, he became jealous of the way the weak were allowed to congregate and so wished to become weak himself. In an attempt to escape his loneliness, he split his soul in two, creating himself and Lilynette. Starrk couldn’t remember what they looked like before they split and suspected that their original appearance didn’t match either of them. Despite this, Starrk wanted to become weak so he could be with a group, and if that wasn’t possible, he wanted to find someone as strong as him.

When he split his soul, he asked the new Lilynette if she had a name. She replied and asked him if he had a name too, although they were both the same person. He gave her his name, then tossed her a cloth in which she wrapped herself. When she asked him what they were going to do now, he simply replied that they could do whatever they wanted. She then asked him where they were going to go, and he simply replied “anywhere”. He then assured Lilynette that no matter what, they would always stay together.

Starrk and Lilynette were alone when Aizen first found them. They were sitting in front of mountains of dead Hollows that impressed Aizen. He asked them if they had killed all the Hollows in the area, to which Starrk replied no, because they were already dead.

This impressed Aizen even more, who noticed that Starrk seemed powerful. Aizen then had an idea and told Arrancar he was looking for allies. Starrk replied that it was a coincidence, as they too were looking for allies, and asked Aizen if his allies were strong. Aizen told him to join him and find out for himself. Starrk agreed to join him, noting that Aizen seemed capable of staying with them without dying.

Some time later, Aizen created Annalouise, but he soon discovered that she suffered from acute myeloid leukemia and was confined to bed due to her brittle bones. Starrk later met her and became “attached” to her, visiting her constantly. On one such visit, Starrk asked her for her name, to which she replied that she didn’t have one. Starrk was surprised and spent the next few days thinking of a name for her, and with Lilynette’s help, he came up with the name “Annalouise”. He visited her and told her about her new name, which made her happy to have a name.
