WHO CREATED BROLY?

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
This legendary character was originally created by Takao Koyama. The idea was to create a particularly powerful and menacing Saiyan villain. He was inspired by the form of Super Trunks in the Cell saga. ✏

As for the name, Takao followed the usual trend of assigning vegetable names to Saiyan characters. Broly is thus a pun on broccoli, while his father, Paragus, is inspired by asparagus. 🥦

Interestingly, Broly has never been seen with a monkey tail. In Dragon Ball Super, the explanation is given to us by Paragus. His son tended to be far too devastating on full moon nights, so the latter decided to cut off his tail to avoid Oozaru (giant monkey) transformations. 🐵

Finally, let’s note that in the survival saga of the Dragon Ball Super universe, we find a female character named Kale. This Saiyan warrior is portrayed as a female version of Broly due to her transformation. Indeed, as Vegeta explains, Kale manages to transform herself into the original form of the Saiyans. His hair turns green and his power is absolutely immeasurable. This form is very similar to Broly’s when he transforms and unleashes all his power. ✨

It’s for this reason that Kefla, the fusion of Caulifla and Kale, has the ability to achieve this form. Her hair is green and her power is phenomenal, so much so that only the ultra instinct state can defeat her. If you’d like to find out more about this fascinating character, we invite you to discover our ultimate guide to Kefla! 😉

APPARENCE OF BROLY

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
It’s no secret that there have been two versions of Broly since Dragon Ball Super. The first, and best-known, is the one featured in the 90s movie Broly the Super Warrior. This excellent OVA features the legendary Super Saiyan as the main antagonist. He has since appeared in virtually every video game up to the present day. The second version of Broly is the one featured in the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The two versions are very similar, since Akira Toriyama decided to use virtually the same storyline for the character. The most recent Broly is therefore the most canonical from a storytelling point of view. However, as we’ve just seen, the character retains an almost identical physique. 💪

Regarding his appearance, Broly is a rather light-skinned Saiyan with dark eyes and fairly long black hair. The latter is spiked up to the middle of his back. As a child, he wore a black tunic with a stripe, gray pants and brown boots. As an adult, Broly is a very imposing man with a well-built body. He always maintains a melancholy air and wears a crown. 👑

He almost always appears shirtless, wearing white pants and a red belt adorned with precious stones. He also wears yellow boots.

His father, Paragus, uses the crown, bracelets and a necklace to maintain control over his son. Broly’s mental instability continues to grow. His jewelry will be destroyed after he frees himself from Paragus’ control. He will be scarred after his defeat by Goku. 🔥

BROLY’S PERSONALITY

At first glance, Broly appears to be a rather docile and harmless Saiyan, something that is contrary to the majority of Saiyans. However, Broly possesses a dual, unpredictable nature. As the Paragus flashback shows, when he briefly wakes up and asks his father what he’s up to, he ends up getting angry when he realizes that he wants to place the Crown of Control on his head. When he switches to an aggressive state, Broly excels in combat and brutality. The result is far more destructive than most other Saiyans. This violent, manic side stems from his extraordinary power, which he has never really learned to control. It also comes from the traumatic events of his birth. These moments of madness and frenzy occur more frequently and last longer as he grows older. The consequence? He will pluck out his father’s left eye. 👁
Largely due to his madness, Broly is also known to become hysterical when causing destruction or going into a frenzied state. This is very well shown in the Paragus flashback where we see Broly, after destroying a cityscape as a child, laughing uncontrollably. Broly also seems to have a real problem controlling his rage, which means he could end up destroying himself. In an effort to control his erratic behavior, Paragus used a device to control Broly’s temper. 😨

Broly’s most characteristic trait is his intense hatred for Goku. When they were both newborns, Goku’s incessant crying greatly irritated the neighboring Broly, arousing hatred that would unconsciously grow and awaken at the sight of Goku. It’s implied that the reason for his hatred for Goku was that he unconsciously associated Goku’s incessant crying with the horrible things he had to endure later, such as narrowly surviving execution and narrowly escaping the destruction of Planet Vegeta. So he blamed Goku for these things. 😠

It’s for this reason that he often shouts Goku’s Saiyan name, “Kakarot”, exclamatorily. Although he usually addresses Goku by his Saiyan name, he has called him by his Earth name twice, both times during their fight on the new planet Vegeta. However, despite his hatred of Goku, the Japanese version of the film implies that he respects Goku’s resolve to try and stop him, even if the chances of doing so are slim. He calls him and the other Z-Fighters “worthy of their Saiyan blood”. 💪

It’s implied that Broly has an equally low opinion of Vegeta. In the Japanese version, Vegeta regains enough bravery to try to attack Broly, the latter coldly declaring that he has no intention of letting Vegeta have an easy kill against him.

In the second film, his defeat by Goku and his deep wounds cause him to lose his mind completely. His speech is now limited to shouting “Kakarot”. He even mistakes Goten for baby Goku, even though he had just met him 7 years earlier. He confuses Gohan and Goten with Kakarot. 😅

The only part of his mind that seems intact is his sadistic desire for revenge against Goku.

BIOGRAPHY OF BROLY

A TOUGH CHILDHOOD

Broly was born in the year 737, during the period of extreme tension between Freezer and the Saiyans. When he was born, his most curious characteristic was his power level, estimated at 10,000. This anomaly means that from birth, Broly’s power was already close to that of Bardock and King Vegeta at the time of their deaths. In the Saiyan delivery room where he later rests, Broly is tormented by the constant crying of his neighbor, Kakarot. Kakarot’s crying affected Broly’s psychological state of mind, earning him a subconscious grudge. The two infants would not be reunited for nearly three decades. ⏳
King Vegeta feared the threat the boy posed to his empire, so he gave the order to execute the infant. Broly’s father, Paragus, begged the king to spare the child’s life, attesting that his son could be an extremely valuable asset to the ruler. King Vegeta was quick to point out that, even if true, Broly could still use his demented strength to overthrow the royal family. King Vegeta puts an end to the argument by condemning Paragus to death, shooting him with a wave of energy. Broly is then stabbed in the chest and left for dead with Paragus. 🗡

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
When planet Vegeta is destroyed, Broly awakens and uses his powers to protect himself and his father. Ironically, the destruction of Planet Vegeta had been orchestrated by Freezer for exactly the same reason that King Vegeta had tried to execute Broly earlier: for fear that the legendary Super Saiyan would rise up and overthrow him. Broly then stays with his father while Paragus plots revenge against King Vegeta and the royal family. 👑

Thereafter, as Broly grew older, his behavior became increasingly unpredictable and manic due to his immense power and traumatic childhood events. This manifested itself in a punch he delivered to Paragus, causing him to lose sight in his left eye. 👁

Despite his fears for his own safety, Paragus refused to kill Broly and instead used a ring as a special control device to keep him under control. Paragus barely survived putting the ring in place. Subsequently, Paragus hatched a plan to use Earth as a base of operations and exact revenge on Vegeta by luring him to a planet doomed to be destroyed by a giant comet. ☄

Meanwhile, he also used Broly to destroy the remaining planets in the southern zone, which drew King Kaio’s attention to the disturbances in the universe. King Kaio logically contacted Goku to inform him of this threat.

BROLY IN DRAGON BALL Z

FIRST APPEARANCE: “BROLY THE LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN

Broly initially appeared to be a calm, gentle Saiyan. His personality changed radically when he was freed from his control ring. He accompanied Vegeta to the planet Todokama in his quest for the legendary Super Saiyan.

When Goku teleported to Paragus’ palace, Broly was overcome by rage. His father failed to calm him down. The legendary Saiyan attacked Goku, plunged into a frenzy of rage. It was then that Goku realized that Broly was responsible for the attacks in the southern galaxy. The fight ended when Paragus managed to calm his son using his control device. 💥

When Vegeta tried to escape the planet with the others and Paragus’s plan was revealed, Broly charged at Goku, angrily uttering his name. His tiara was destroyed and he transformed into a legendary Super Saiyan, freeing himself from Paragus’ control. Vegeta was profoundly shaken by Broly’s ki, and Broly fought against Goku and his friends. In the grip of madness and rage, he overpowered Goku, Gohan and Trunks of the Future. Finally, Piccolo intervened in the battle, but even he was no help against Broly’s incredible power. Shortly afterwards, Vegeta overcame his fear and joined the fight, but he was soon overwhelmed. 😫

As our heroes were defeated, Broly attacked Paragus, who was trying to escape from the planet. The legendary Saiyan wanted to prevent Paragus from regaining control over him. Meanwhile, Goku asked his friends to focus all their energy on him. Vegeta was the last to accept. Goku was then able to return the punches. 🤛

The two Saiyans charged at each other as the planet began to disintegrate beneath their feet. Broly threw a punch at Goku that missed its target, while Kakarot delivered a powerful blow to Broly’s abdomen. Broly’s green energy exploded at the point of impact and his skin seemed to crack under the green light emitted by his body. Stunned, Broly screamed and exploded, seemingly defeated. 💥

BROLY’S RETURN

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
As predicted, Broly survived his defeat by Goku. He managed to escape aboard a space capsule as the planet was being destroyed. The capsule made its way to Earth. Once there, Broly fell into a 7-year coma. He woke up because of Goten’s repeated screams. 🥱

After emerging from this grave, Broly became much more powerful thanks to this near-death experience. Like every Saiyan, he becomes stronger and more resilient after his near-death experience. So Broly decided to take revenge on Goku’s friends, especially his sons Goten and Gohan. Due to his seriously impaired mental health, he confused the three Saiyans and also attacked Videl and Trunks. 🤛

Gohan discovered the legendary Super Saiyan on the scene. His rampage was uncontrolled and his attacks failed. He finally fell victim to a Kamehameha fired by Gohan, Goten and the spirit of Goku. His heart exploded after he shouted “Kakarot” one last time. 💥

Thus ended Broly’s story in the OVAs. However, the character was definitively integrated into the canon universe thanks to the final Dragon Ball Super movie. The Saiyan was given a “reboot”, while retaining many similarities with the original.

DRAGON BALL SUPER : BROLY

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
In this magnificent film that concludes the Dragon Ball Super series, Broly appears in a similar context. Even as a baby, he possesses powers far above the average, as does Vegeta. The King seeks to eliminate him by sending him to a hostile planet on the other side of the universe. His father Paragus joins him to protect and train him. 🤼

The legendary Saiyan grows up in a hostile environment and learns to survive. He befriends a giant green monster. Later, he recovers his diadem and wears it as clothing. For many years, Paragus and his son are isolated on this planet, until a Freezer team comes to rescue them 😀

Once in front of the tyrant, he immediately perceives Broly’s fighting potential and plans to travel to Earth to challenge Goku and Vegeta.

Once there, Broly engages the Prince of the Saiyans in combat. As the battle progresses, he gains in power. Although dominated at first, he builds up his energy and becomes increasingly formidable. The transformation into a divine Super Saiyan allows Vegeta to gain time and push Broly back. However, Broly’s anger grows ever more intense and he becomes uncontrollable. Paragus has lost his control device and can no longer hold him back. 😱

Broly then pushes Goku away and becomes invincible. When Kakarot finally manages to overpower him, Freezer decides to assassinate Paragus to observe the Saiyan’s reaction. Broly then goes berserk and reaches his most powerful form. He attacks everyone, easily defeating Goku, Vegeta and even Golden Freezer. 🤼‍♂️

This transformation is extremely powerful and Freezer manages to resist for around an hour, giving Goku and Vegeta enough time to master the fusion technique. If you want to know more about this magnificent form, check out our article on Freezer!

The fight resumes, and it’s now a duel between Super Broly and Gogeta in Super Saiyan Blue. Unsurprisingly, it’s Gogeta who easily gets the upper hand. During an ultimate Kamehameha attack, Broly is teleported to his home planet, saving him from the devastating attack. 💥

At the end of the film, Goku pays him a visit, offering him food and a home. Our hero wants only one thing: to train with Broly. This opponent is up to the challenge and will enable Goku to progress.

Will we see Broly in the future? Only time will tell! Freezer seems intent on forming an alliance with him to oppose Goku and Vegeta… 💪

HOW POWERFUL IS BROLY?

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
In the OVA films:

Before Broly was revealed as the legendary Super Saiyan, Paragus claimed that Broly’s power level was inferior to his own, a claim previously confirmed by Trunks of the Future who called him a “toothpick” in comparison. However, his basic form may indeed have been weaker than Paragus’ when he wore the crown. Broly’s ki, in its Super Saiyan form, was powerful enough to be barely perceptible on King Kaio’s planet while it was causing havoc in the Southern Galaxy. ☄

Then, once transformed into a legendary Super Saiyan, it was strongly implied that he was powerful enough to destroy the Southern Galaxy single-handedly, leaving only a few planets and stars. In his ultimate form, nothing could stop him and his strength was immeasurable.

In his legendary Super Saiyan form, he was stronger than Goku and Gohan in Super Saiyan, Trunks of the Future and Vegeta in Super Saiyan 2, as well as Super Piccolo. He easily defeated them all. Even when Piccolo and Goku both launched a combined punching and kicking attack against Broly, he suffered no damage. Remarkably, he even willingly took a point-blank Super Kamehameha from Goku in Super Saiyan 2, unhurt, and laughed at the attack, sarcastically mocking Goku. 😨

The fact that Broly could take Goku’s Super Saiyan attacks without suffering damage indicates that he was at least twice as strong as Goku. His physical strength in this form was also sufficient to easily crush Paragus’s heavy armor and launch it off the planet.

What’s more, Broly demonstrated exceptional stamina, surviving serious injuries that would normally have killed anyone else. He was stabbed in the heart as a child. In addition, he was violently struck in the abdomen by Goku at full power. His Saiyan nature has enabled him to draw even greater strength from these experiences.

In the Dragon Ball Super movie:

Broly - Dragon Ball Z
Broly initially appears weaker than Goku and Vegeta in his first form. However, as he fights, he becomes more and more powerful. When he reaches his ultimate form, nothing can stop him, not even Goku, Vegeta or Golden Freezer. 💥

It’s precisely for this reason that Goku and Vegeta merge into Gogeta Blue, the only being capable of defeating him with any ease. In this film, Broly thus reaches a level of power superior to the Divine Super Saiyan Blue. However, it’s conceivable that the Ultra Instinct mode might be able to defeat him. However, Goku does not access this transformation in the film.

It would seem that only Gogeta Blue can calm Broly…

FOUR RECURRENT QUESTIONS ABOUT BROLY

What is Broly’s level?

Although Broly’s maximum level is not known, his ultimate transformation enables him to defeat virtually any opponent under normal conditions. In the films, Goku and his friends are systematically forced to join forces to defeat him. This makes Broly one of the most powerful characters in Dragon Ball.

Who’s stronger between Broly and Jiren?

It’s highly likely that Jiren has a slightly higher level than Broly Ultimate. In Dragon Ball Super, Jiren is said to be a mortal who has managed to surpass a God of Destruction. In the anime, only Goku in Ultra Instinct is capable of inflicting heavy damage. So you need to reach an angelic fighting state in order to have any hope of defeating Jiren.

Why does Broly hate Goku?

In the movie “Broly the Super Warrior”, it’s said that during his childhood, the legendary Saiyan was enormously disturbed by Son Goku’s incessant crying. It’s for this reason that Broly screams Kakarot’s name during his moments of madness.

Who is the legendary Super Saiyan?

According to the legend of their people, a Legendary Saiyan is born once every 1,000 years. In Dragon Ball Z, this warrior is none other than Broly. When he transforms, he reaches a special state close to the original strength of the Saiyan people. In Universe 6, Kale is the legendary Super Saiyan.
Broly - Dragon Ball Z

In Universe 6, it’s Kale who is “the Super Saiyan of legend”. She accesses the same transformation as Broly.

BROLY’S BEST FIGHTING TECHNIQUES

As well as being able to achieve an absolutely phenomenal ultimate form, Broly, the legendary Saiyan, is capable of using some fearsome fighting techniques. Here are his 7 most lethal fighting techniques! 👊
Powered Shell: Technique used to generate an energy shield around the user to protect him from attacks.

Omega Blaster: Broly throws a lime-green sphere of energy which transforms into a huge energy bomb of devastating power, all the while saying “Fight all you want, in the end you’ll still die!”. Not only can he control the size of this attack, but he can also fuel it by firing blasts of ki into it to drive it forward, making it even more powerful and destructive enough to destroy the entire planet. However, this also gives an indication of the technique’s weakness. Without a constant supply of ki blasts, the Omega Blaster will lose power and weaken.

Lariat: Broly rushes at the enemy at high speed, then grabs his opponent by the neck as he turns, slamming him into a wall with enough force to leave a massive crater on impact. He then continues to force the opponent across the crater and strangle him simultaneously, before releasing him and dropping him to the ground as the enemy loses consciousness.

Giant Hammer: First, Broly hits the opponent with a huge clothesline. Next, he grabs the opponent by the shoulders and lifts him up into the air vertically. Then he teleports in front of his opponent, grabbing him by the head and flying off to crush him to the ground. Finally, Broly grabs the opponent by the head and uppercuts him in the stomach, throwing him into the air and inflicting enormous damage.

Telekinesis: Technique that allows the user to manipulate objects and other people with the power of his mind.

Torture grip: Broly grabs his opponent, then places them atop his head, each hand gripping his opponent’s head and legs respectively. He then constantly bends the opponent’s body over his head until he either gives up or dies, in all likelihood.

Wild Sense: The user dodges an attack by moving quickly and counterattacks the opponent with a punch or kick sending him to the ground or into the air.
