ATTENTION: The following contains reveals for season 4, episode 14 “Savagery”, and episode 15 “The Only Solution” of Attack of the Titans, currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

For many years, the dreaded Titans have laid siege to the city walls of Paradise Island, and the Eldian defenders have grown grimly accustomed to fighting them with cannons and soldiers equipped with ODM gear. But what can they do now that Sieg has raised his own Titans inside the walls?

A Massive Assault From Inside The Walls?

The Titans are not a natural creation, but rather beings transformed into monsters thanks to the historical power of Ymir Fritz. Any powerful group has the ability to create and use its own Titans at will to destroy its enemies. This is precisely what Sieg Jäger does in the final season. His intention is to use the Original Titan for the Great Terrassement (according to our current knowledge), and wine plays a key role in realizing this plan. From episode 14 onwards, we also get an idea of how many Titans he controls.

How did Sieg lay the groundwork for his plan?

A Massive Assault From Inside The Walls?

The Mahr Empire doesn’t just rely on a few weapons to fight its wars. As a technologically advanced empire, it has soldiers, tanks and zeppelins, but it also possesses the power of Titans, using the force to transform its Eldian citizens into Titans as required, including Metamorph Titans. However, Mahr’s enemies are catching up, prompting the Mahr Empire to resort to clever tactics, such as the use of gas and spiced wine, to maintain their advantage.

In a flashback, it’s clearly shown that the Mahr Empire sends groups of Eldians into foreign nations in human form, then feeds them Sieg Jäger’s cerebrospinal fluid mixed with wine, preparing them to become Titans. When Sieg unleashes his scream, the Eldians transform into Titans on the spot, taking the enemy by unwitting surprise. An entire nation was overthrown in this way when the Eldians transformed in the capital.

Now Sieg is using this strategy for his own ends, without involving the Mahr Eldians or Mahr’s leaders. Instead, Sieg brought several cases of quality Mahr wine with him to Paradise Island, and the Eldians enjoyed it as a delicious novelty, including many officers and soldiers. At present, Eren and Levi are at odds over Sieg, but Sieg is gaining the upper hand by turning Levi’s comrades into Titans with the help of this wine. But most worryingly, an alarming number of the city’s officers and soldiers who have also consumed the spiced wine are beginning to feel its effects. Although they don’t transform completely, we see a large number of them frozen at the moment of the scream. (It seems that the power of Sieg’s scream diminishes as the targeted Eldians move away.)

How can Sieg continue to use this power?

A Massive Assault From Inside The Walls?

Mikasa, Hanji Zoë and the others have already figured out the subterfuge of the wine, but that won’t stop Sieg’s plan from unfolding. Once the cerebrospinal fluid has been consumed, an Eldian is irrevocably prepared to become a Titan, and if Sieg escapes Levi’s wrath, he’ll be able to take advantage of it. If he survives his confrontation with Levi, Sieg could return to town, rally to Eren and threaten to unleash another scream if their demands aren’t met. While we don’t know exactly how many people have been affected, episode 14 hints that Sieg’s poison could spread in shocking fashion. Sieg could demand that all supporters of Eren’s cause, the Jägerists, be allowed to leave the city with them to fight Mahr, and he could even take Dot Pixis and other leaders hostage.

These wine-induced transformations are a double whammy for the soldiers of Paradise Island, as it means not only facing new Titans, but also losing allies in the process. This process could quickly tip the balance in Sieg and Eren’s favor, and the wine has already taken its toll. Levi survived only because of his, well, let’s say unique nature. But the other soldiers might not get off so easily. Sieg’s threat, “I’ll scream if you don’t obey me!”, is fraught with consequences. Will he take action?
