In the Attack of the Titans universe, Eren Jäger and Gabi Braun are involved in the conflict between Eldia and Mahr, but they’re on opposite sides. Yet, despite appearances, the two characters have much in common.
Gabi Braun is often regarded as one of the show’s most detestable characters, largely due to the death she caused of fan-favorite Sasha Braus. However, on closer inspection, there are striking similarities between Gabi and protagonist Eren.
In fact, the two characters are like two sides of the same coin, and their stories present interesting parallels. This adds extra depth to the final story arcs of Attack of the Titans.

10. Similarity: Eren and Gabi are physically similar and both work in the military.
It’s interesting to note that the younger version of Eren shares many similarities with Gabi. Indeed, series creator Hajime Isayama has admitted that Gabi’s design was inspired by a sketch of Eren. Of course, Gabi is a girl and her eye color differs from Eren’s, but their physical similarities are striking nonetheless. What’s more, both characters have signed up for military service.
9. Difference: Gabi immediately excels as a soldier, while Eren does not.
During his training as a soldier, Eren was never considered particularly gifted at anything. Although he improved over time, his determination often made up for his initial shortcomings. Nevertheless, he never really excelled and graduated in fifth place, behind Mikasa, Reiner, Bertolt and Annie. Interestingly, all the other graduates before him, except Mikasa, were undercover mahr warriors.
On the other hand, Gabi’s training as a warrior was difficult, but she excelled at it. Before the Revelio raid, she was destined to inherit the Dreadnought Titan from her cousin Reiner, a responsibility she considered a privilege she’d earned through hard work. Although Eren is a gifted fighter, Gabi is better than him.
8. Similarity: they are both Eldians and have the ability to transform into Titans.
Eren and Gabi share a common ancestry as children of Ymir, a race of humans with the ability to transform into Titans. The history of this race is marked by atrocities, and both characters pay a heavy price for the crimes of their ancestors. From the moment they are born, they are stigmatized as demons, fueling hatred between Mahr and Eldia and perpetuating the conflict.
7. Difference: their families and places of origin are different.
Eren is a citizen of Paradise who lived in the Shiganshina district until it was destroyed by Reiner and Bertolt. Gabi, meanwhile, was born in Mahr, in the Revelio internment zone. After the fall of the Maria Wall, Eren lost his family, while Gabi is still lucky enough to have her mother, father, cousin Reiner, as well as her aunt and uncle by her side.
.6. Similarity: they both run headlong into danger and have friends who help them.
Even before the fall of the Maria Wall, Eren is often shown throwing himself into battles to defend his friend Armin, despite his limitations. Mikasa often intervenes to help Eren stand his ground. This pattern is repeated even after Eren becomes a soldier and adopts the power of the Titan Assassin. In the beginning, Mikasa is there to help Eren fight enemies, such as bullies. She’s also there to support him when he takes on the Hammer and Jaw Titans at Revelio.
Similarly, Gabi often rushes into dangerous situations. At Fort Salta, she disguises herself as a non-combatant to destroy the armored tank endangering the Titans’ forces. Her friend Falco Grice steps in to help her, both at Fort Salta and during the raid on Revelio. He rushes after her when she pursues the Eldian airship. Eren and Gabi’s impetuous actions, while sometimes justified and understandable, can cause suffering to those around them.
5. Difference: Eren inherits several Titans, but Gabi never becomes the Dreadnought Titan.
Following the fall of the Maria Wall, Grisha Jäger transforms her son Eren into a pure Titan, enabling him to acquire the powers of both the Assaulting Titan and the Original Titan by eating his own father. Later, during the Revelio raid, Eren claims Lara Tybur’s Hammer Titan, which he also consumes. For her part, Gabi is supposed to inherit the Dreadnought Titan from her cousin Reiner, but never gets the chance.
4. Similarity: they both want revenge for the loved ones they’ve lost.
Eren’s main motivation throughout the anime is twofold: to attain freedom and to destroy the Titans. After his mother is devoured in Shiganshina by Dina Fritz’s Smiling Titan, he becomes obsessed with his quest for revenge, vowing to annihilate the monstrous creatures. Even before Carla’s death, he wishes to travel beyond the Walls to defeat the Titans so that humanity can be free.
<Gabi's situation is similar. She is determined to prove herself as a worthy warrior of Marley and to defeat the devils of Paradis. During the raid on Liberio, she loses her fellow warrior candidates Udo and Zofia. Sieg Jaeger also betrays her, just as Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie betray Eren and the Scout Regiment..3. Difference: Gabi’s hatred of Eldians is largely unjustified until Revelio
Although Eren and Gabi share similar motivations, it’s easier to empathize with Eren, especially at the beginning of the story. The tragic death of his mother Carla is so poignant that his subsequent actions can be understood, even excused. In contrast, Gabi begins the story as an unsympathetic character who blindly repeats the Mahrs’ propaganda and ignores the consequences of their actions. Her hatred of the so-called “demons” of Paradise is largely unjustified, at least until the Revelio raid, when she loses her friends. To make matters worse, she’s the one who shoots Eren, decapitating him and separating him from his body.
2. Similarity: they’re both brainwashed and trapped by a force of authority.
When King Fritz, the 145th ruler of Eldia, takes refuge behind the walls, he deceives his subjects into believing that they are the last humans on Earth. The kings who follow are all subject to his will. The citizens of Paradise are ruled by a corrupt government and a puppet king, while Rod Reiss pulls the strings in the shadows.
On the other hand, Mahr teaches the Eldians that they are monsters and keeps them in internment camps while using them as weapons. Gabi and Eren are both trapped in different oppressive systems. According to Willy Tybur, this situation is the result of King Fritz’s decision to cooperate with Mahr to overthrow the Eldian empire.
1. Difference: Eren’s desperation turns him into a villain while Gabi overcomes her prejudices.
Eren, after learning the truth about the Titans, adopts extreme methods to achieve his goals. His character development pushes him towards the role of genocidal antagonist as he dedicates himself to the realization of the Great Earthwork. Gabi, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. Although she has never abandoned her hatred of Eren, she has managed to overcome most of her prejudices towards the other inhabitants of Paradise.
