Livai Ackerman has many accomplishments to his credit. He’s undeniably one of the most beloved characters in Attack of the Titans, as evidenced by his landslide victory in two consecutive popularity polls. Not only is he the captain of the Exploration Battalion’s special operations team, but he’s also recognized as humanity’s greatest soldier due to his unrivalled sword-fighting skill, agility and strength.
In addition, he has eliminated far more Titans than any other character in the series, over 58. Despite the fact that Livai represents the hope of the Exploration Battalion and is admired by his colleagues and superiors, he has undoubtedly endured more suffering than most characters in the series.

10 He was forced to join the Exploration Battalion and lost his closest friends.
Attack of the Titans: No Regrets tells a side story that explores Livai’s past as a delinquent before he joined the Exploration Battalion. After being actively pursued by Erwin Smith and his Exploration Battalion comrades, Livai and his close friends Furlan and Isabel were questioned about their learning to use three-dimensional equipment. Erwin was impressed by their skills and pressured Livai and his friends to join the Exploration Battalion, promising to ignore Livai’s past crimes if they agreed. In the course of the story, Livai is confronted with a macabre scene in which he discovers Furlan and Isabel lying lifeless, killed by Titans. Unsurprisingly, he is seized with a relentless fury and brutally kills the Titan responsible for their deaths.
9. His entire special operations team has been eliminated.
The Livai special operations team consisted of Eld Jinn, Petra Ral, Oluo Bozado and Gunther Schultz. Unfortunately, each member was cruelly eliminated by the Female Titan, also known as Annie Leonhart. As Livai moved through the forest and discovered each of his precious comrades dead, his expression was devoid of emotion, suggesting that he might have developed a certain insensitivity to the loss of his friends.
8. He broke his leg trying to save his comrades.
The unfortunate Livai didn’t even have time to mourn the loss of his entire special operations team before setting off, accompanied by a distraught Mikasa, in pursuit of the Female Titan who had abducted Eren. After explaining to Mikasa that they had to concentrate on a single objective – saving Eren – Livai threw himself at the Female Titan, driving it into a corner with his fearsome fighting style. At this point, Mikasa underestimates the situation and naively thinks she can kill the Female Titan by attacking its neck. Fortunately, Livai saves her, but at the cost of a broken leg.
7. He lost his mother when he was a child.
Livai’s mother, Kuchel Ackerman, resided in the underground city, where she worked as a prostitute. Little information is available about her life in general, but she appeared to be a loving mother who strove to raise Livai alone. She succumbed to an unknown illness, and Kenny Ackerman, Livai’s uncle and Kuchel’s older brother, went to her home not yet knowing that she had died. When he enters her room, young Livai, who was on the verge of death due to starvation, sits by his mother’s bed and informs Kenny of her passing.
6. His own uncle tried to kill him.
Kenny Ackerman attempted to obtain Titan powers from Uri Reiss after developing a friendship with him, despite his initial attempt to kill him. He used his influence within the government to create the Anti-Personnel Control Squad, claiming that its purpose was to oppose the Exploration Battalion in order to win the Assembly’s approval. In reality, however, his real aim was to seize the powers of the Original Titan. Consumed by his lust for power, Kenny pulled out all the stops to get what he wanted, even going so far as to try and kill his nephew, Livai, in the process.
5. He was asked to look after the Bestial Titan and was betrayed in the process.
While Sieg Jäger, known as the Bestial Titan, was posing as a Paradise Island ally to carry out his own plan, Livai was tasked with keeping an eye on him. This was far from an ideal situation, given that he had promised Erwin Smith to kill the Titan Bestial and now had to protect him. However, Sieg betrayed their trust by transforming several members of the Exploration Battalion into Titans with his scream, then fleeing from his hiding place. Livai, devastated, found himself in the midst of this danger and was forced to kill his own comrades.
4. He had to make the decision to let Erwin die.
A heartbreaking moment that kept fans on the edge of their seats was when Livai had to make the difficult decision of who would survive between Erwin and Armin. Initially, Livai was ready to save Erwin, but the latter unwittingly pushed the liquid from his hand while hallucinating about his past life. It was then that Livai made the decision to let Erwin die, allowing Armin, who had already demonstrated incredible leadership abilities, to continue to develop.
3. He suffered permanent injuries.
Levi suffered serious injuries after Sieg blew himself up with a thunder spear. The explosion left him in a terrible state, losing several of his fingers. In addition, during the final battle to stop the Great Earthwork, Levi lost the use of his legs while still healing from his previous injuries. The final chapter of Attack of the Titans revealed that Levi was now wheelchair-bound due to the multiple injuries he sustained.
2. Eren constantly puts him in bad situations.
On numerous occasions, Livai had to repair the damage when it came to Eren. Whether it was rescuing him from kidnapping or flying to his aid when he made impulsive decisions by launching an attack on Mahr, Livai always bore the burden of saving Eren from his own problems, while suffering himself in the process.
1. He has essentially lost everyone dear to him.
Livai has faced many incredibly painful losses throughout the series. From his mother to his closest friends to his entire team, including Erwin and Hansi, there’s no doubt that Livai has suffered more loss than most. However, the series offered him an opportunity for redemption in the final chapter, where he was able to pay his final respects to his fallen comrades before they departed for the afterlife.
